Ember Academy

Ember Academy

Synopsis Sera has never left her village, and she's never had magic, not until the day a wildfire comes for everyone she loves and her bare hands carve it a border it cannot cross. Fire affinity was supposed to have died out a century ago, hunted into extinction by the noble houses who rule the continent's most prestigious academy. Now Sera is the first fire mage born in a hundred years, and the moment she steps through Ember Academy's gates, the whole school realizes exactly what that means. Publicly tested, publicly marked, and hunted by a prophecy she never asked to fulfill, Sera has to survive a world built by people who believe magic belongs to blood, not to will, all while a cold, guarded rival named Dorian Vale, the last son of a fallen house, becomes the only person inside those walls who might actually be on her side. Three sentence selling points: Sera is the first fire mage born in a hundred years, an ordinary village girl thrown into a school built entirely to prove people like her shouldn't exist. Every noble house on the ridge wants to own her, erase her, or use her, and the only person who doesn't want anything from her is the one boy she was warned not to trust, Dorian Vale. A prophecy older than the academy itself says the old fire's return means the old order burns, and Sera never agreed to be anyone's revolution.

Chapter: Chapter 9:The fire That Answers
She couldn't sleep.Mira's breathing had gone slow and even hours ago, but Sera lay staring at the stone ceiling of their room, Dorian's voice circling in her head, I care about control, and from what I saw last night, you have none, and underneath that, worse, Oren's careless half-admission that House Vale's fall had something, somehow, to do with her.She got up. She told herself she wasn't going to the practice yard. She went to the practice yard anyway. The moon was high and cold over the walled courtyard, the brazier sitting dark and empty where Oren had left it, and Sera stood in front of it in her sleeping shift with her arms wrapped around herself, more from nerves than from any real chill."Reach for it," she whispered to no one. "Not with panic. With intention."She held her hands out. Nothing came, not at first, and the old fear crept back in immediately, sharp and familiar, what if it only answers when something is dying, what if I'm nothing without a crisis to justify me.

Chapter: Chapter 8:The Lesson And The Rival
"Late." Master Oren didn't look up from the brazier he was tending when Sera burst through the practice yard doors, breath still short from running the length of the east wing. "Fire mages who arrive late to their own first lesson tend not to arrive at all to their second.""I got lost. This place has about four hundred identical corridors.""Three hundred and twelve, actually, but I appreciate the effort." A ghost of a smile crossed his face before it vanished back into the gravel. "Come. Stand here."The practice yard was smaller than Sera expected, walled in on all sides by dark stone scorched black in places from what must have been decades of exactly this kind of lesson, and at its center sat a shallow iron brazier, cold and empty, waiting."Before you do anything," Oren said, "you need to understand the one rule that matters more than every other rule combined. Fire answers to will. Not to bloodline, not to technique, not to how badly you want it. Will. Which means the moment yo

Chapter: Chapter 7: The Dormitory
"You're the fire girl."Sera hadn't even gotten her pack down off her shoulder before the voice hit her, quick and bright and utterly unbothered by the hour, some girl already sitting cross legged on the bed across from the one that had apparently been assigned to Sera, dark hair escaping its braid in every direction."I, yes. I suppose I am.""Everyone's talking about you. Like, everyone. I heard three different versions of what happened in the hall before I even got back here, one of them had you setting the entire ceiling on fire, which, I mean, close enough, but also not exactly what happened, was it." The girl was already up off her bed, crossing the small room in two quick steps, hand out. "I'm Mira. Water affinity. Also common-born, also scholarship, also apparently your roommate, which honestly might be the least surprising thing that's happened to me all week, because who else were they going to put you with."Sera shook her hand, a little dazed by the sheer speed of it. "Ser

Chapter: Chapter 6:The Fractions
"You cannot be serious." A woman's voice, sharp, cutting through the door before Sera even reached it. "You want to enroll her? Openly? After what happened in that hall tonight?""I want her trained, Instructor Renna, not hidden in a cellar until she burns her way out of it." That voice Sera knew now. Master Oren, gravel-rough, unbothered. "Which is what will happen if you leave a fire mage untaught out of fear."Sera had been marched straight from the Great Hall to a small stone antechamber and told to wait, and waiting had turned out to mean standing outside a heavy door listening to five raised voices argue about her future like she wasn't fifteen feet away and perfectly capable of hearing every word."The prophecy is a legend for frightening novices," said a third voice, thin, precise. "It has no bearing on academy policy.""Tell that to the Headmaster," Oren shot back. "He said the word himself, in front of the entire school. You think that stays quiet? By morning every noble hou

Chapter: Chapter 5: The Sorting
Fire mages of your kind were not simply forgotten, girl. They were hunted. The words wouldn't stop circling in Sera's head as she was pushed, gently but firmly, into a line of new students filing into the Great Hall. All of them dressed clean and pressed and calm in a way Sera very much was not. Her dress was wrinkled from the road, the hem still faintly dusted grey, and her hands wouldn't stop finding each other, twisting together at her waist like they needed something to hold onto that wasn't fire."Relax your shoulders." Vell's voice, low, close at her side. "Whatever happens in there, you cannot let them see you afraid.""That's, that's easy for you to say.""It is not," Vell said, and something in her voice had gone almost gentle, "easy for me to say. But it's true regardless. Fear is a scent in a room like that one. And there are people in there who will hunt it the moment they catch it on you."The line shuffled forward, slow, unhurried, students ahead of her murmuring to each

Chapter: Chapter 4: The Gates
"There." Vell's hand shot up, flat and sharp, cutting through the easy rhythm of hoofbeats they'd fallen into over the last hour of riding. "Off the road, now. Into the trees."Sera didn't ask questions this time. She'd learned that much already, in less than a day of riding beside this woman, that when Vell's voice changed like that, quick and low and utterly without room for argument, the smartest thing Sera could do was move first and understand later. She turned her mare hard off the packed dirt track, ducking low under a branch that nearly caught her across the shoulder, and pressed herself flat against the horse's neck in the shadow of the trees. Her heart was slamming so hard she could feel it in her throat.A moment later four riders came around the bend at a hard canter, black cloaks snapping behind them, no house colors that Sera could make out, no crest, no banner, nothing at all to say who they were or who they served. Their faces stayed hooded despite the heat of the afte
