Synopsis Sera has never left her village, and she's never had magic, not until the day a wildfire comes for everyone she loves and her bare hands carve it a border it cannot cross. Fire affinity was supposed to have died out a century ago, hunted into extinction by the noble houses who rule the continent's most prestigious academy. Now Sera is the first fire mage born in a hundred years, and the moment she steps through Ember Academy's gates, the whole school realizes exactly what that means. Publicly tested, publicly marked, and hunted by a prophecy she never asked to fulfill, Sera has to survive a world built by people who believe magic belongs to blood, not to will, all while a cold, guarded rival named Dorian Vale, the last son of a fallen house, becomes the only person inside those walls who might actually be on her side. Three sentence selling points: Sera is the first fire mage born in a hundred years, an ordinary village girl thrown into a school built entirely to prove people like her shouldn't exist. Every noble house on the ridge wants to own her, erase her, or use her, and the only person who doesn't want anything from her is the one boy she was warned not to trust, Dorian Vale. A prophecy older than the academy itself says the old fire's return means the old order burns, and Sera never agreed to be anyone's revolution.

Chapter 1: The Drought Year

"Move! It's coming down the ridge, move!"

Sera was already running before she understood what she was running toward. Old Bett's voice cracked across the square like a whip, and the whole village seemed to lurch at once, buckets swinging, someone's goat screaming somewhere behind the mill. She grabbed the nearest pail off the well wall without thinking, and the metal handle bit cold into her palm even though the air, God, the air was already so hot it felt like breathing through a cookfire.

"Sera, no, the line's over there, you go to the line."

"I know where the line is, Bett, I'm going."

She wasn't going to the line. She could see that from here, from the top of the square, and so could everyone else if they'd just look up instead of screaming at their own feet. The fire wasn't creeping down the hillside the way it had two summers back, slow enough that the whole village could pass buckets hand to hand and choke it out before it reached the fences. This one was running. It had teeth. It had already jumped the dry creek bed that was supposed to stop it, the creek bed that hadn't held water since spring, since the drought took even that from them, and now it was eating through old Maren's wheat field like the wheat wanted to burn.

"Sera!" That was her mother now, somewhere behind her, and there was real fear in it, the kind Sera had heard only twice before in her life. "Get back here, get back to the house."

She didn't get back to the house.

She stood at the edge of the wheat field with the pail hanging useless and half-forgotten from her fingers, and she watched the fire come, and something in her chest did the thing it had done twice before, quietly, when no one was looking. A kind of pulling. A kind of want.

"What are you doing, girl, move." That was Old Bett again, right behind her now, hand closing on her shoulder to haul her back, and Sera shrugged out of it without meaning to, without deciding to, the way you shrug out of a coat that's suddenly too hot.

"I can stop it."

"You can what."

She didn't answer. She didn't have an answer, not one she could say out loud, not one that made any kind of sense even inside her own head. She just knew, the way she'd known twice before, small and stupid and secret, in the kitchen when the oil caught and no one was hurt, in the woodshed last winter when her breath had gone to smoke in the cold and something under her ribs had answered back. She knew that if she reached for the thing pulling at her chest right now, it would come.

So she reached.

Her hands went up before her mind caught up to them, palms out toward the wall of orange bearing down on the field, and for one horrible second nothing happened at all, nothing, just heat and smoke and the roar of it eating wheat sixty feet away and closing, and she thought, stupid, stupid girl, you're going to die here in Maren's field for nothing.

Then it answered.

Fire came out of her hands like it had been waiting there her whole life for someone to finally let it out. Not wild, not the sheeting chaos rolling toward her, but a line, a wall, a decision, cutting sideways across the field in a hissing orange seam that ate the dry wheat before the real fire could reach it and left nothing behind but smoking black earth, a firebreak fifteen feet wide, cut clean as if some enormous unseen hand had drawn a border the flames simply could not cross.

The wildfire hit the black earth and stopped.

It didn't leap it. It didn't find a way around. It just stopped, the way a dog stops at the end of its chain, snarling and useless, and behind Sera the whole village had gone dead silent except for the low ugly crackle of a fire that no longer had anywhere to go.

She was still standing there when her hands started shaking. Not from the effort. From what she'd just seen them do.

"Sera." Her mother's voice now, right behind her, and it wasn't fear anymore, it was something else, something Sera had never heard from her before and didn't have a name for. "Sera, look at me. Look at your hands."

She looked. They weren't burned. They weren't even warm. They looked exactly like her hands always looked, and that was somehow the most frightening part of all of it, that fire could come out of something so ordinary.

Nobody in the square moved for a long moment. Nobody cheered. That was the thing Sera would remember later, lying awake that night with her heart still going too fast, that when she turned around, thirty faces were looking back at her, and not one of them looked like they'd just been saved.

They looked like they were looking at something dangerous.

It was the village elder who finally crossed the black, smoking ground to reach her, picking his way slow and careful like the earth itself might still bite him. He was an old man, the kind who didn't scare easy, who'd buried two wives and outlived a plague and never once raised his voice that Sera could remember. He stopped in front of her and looked at her for a long time before he said anything at all.

"Fire like that hasn't walked this world in a hundred years, child." His voice was quiet. Quieter than she'd ever heard it. "Not since before my grandfather's grandfather."

"I didn't mean." Sera started, and didn't know how to finish it. I didn't mean to save us. I didn't mean to be seen doing it.

The elder shook his head slowly, and when he spoke again, it wasn't to her. It was almost to himself, the words dropping quiet and heavy as stones into still water.

"They'll come for you now."
