This Time I Keep the Keys
The last thing Nessa Calder remembers is her husband's hand closing the rescue-boat gate. There was room for his mistress. There was room for the supplies Nessa had carried through a drowning city. There was no room for her.
Then she wakes sixty days before the first storm.
This time, the thirty-two-year-old cold-chain engineer refuses to sign away her mother's depot, leaves her marriage, and spends her inheritance on the things the coming apocalypse will make priceless: clean water, heat, medicine, and doors that hold. A strange storage space gives her a small advantage. It cannot make food, shelter a person, or tell her which memory will fail next.
Her preparations attract Gideon Shaw, a former maritime rescue commander with his own boat, equipment, and reasons to distrust people who promise safety. Their first agreement concerns a damaged loading berth. The next could decide who survives the flood.
As power fails and the streets disappear, Nessa's husband returns to demand a place inside her gates. So do neighbors, desperate strangers, and an old friend whose loyalty has a price Nessa does not yet understand. Protecting her supplies is becoming easier than deciding whom to protect with them.
Then the temperature drops weeks before it should, and an enemy reaches a supply route she told only her closest companions.
Nessa has survived this world's ending once. Who has already made her preparations part of theirs?

Chapter: Chapter 120 Enough to Begin WinterDisaster day forty-two July 14In the morning, Nessa counted what had arrived. The list took longer than the one she'd made at Highwater. Some containers were open now. Bedding had been used twice on the journey. A damaged piece of the crew vehicle lay at the depot instead of beneath its wheel arch. Food she'd packed for waiting had actually fed people who had waited. She recorded what was left rather than copying the old totals into a cleaner notebook.Tamsin checked the water with her. The joint eighteen liters remained intact: twelve from Nessa's van and six recovered from the depot store, now placed in their agreed accessible locations at Alder. They had received no replacement for the general six liters earmarked weeks earlier. The travel drinks, meals and cleaning uses belonged on their own records. Nessa didn't turn a successful arrival into permission to make those deductions disappear.“The food at Highwater?” Tamsin asked.“Still recorded there. Availability unknown until so

Chapter: Chapter 119 Heat in One RoomDisaster day forty-one July 13The first warmth reached Nessa's ankles. She hadn't expected to notice it there. Her shoulders were still cold beneath her coat, her fingers stiff around the folded blanket. Then the air near the floor changed, and she realized she had been bracing against a draught that was finally gone. The installed heating arrangement was operating under the site's existing checked routine. Nell's maintenance worker had completed the necessary checks after the room work. The operating hours written beside the controls were the same ones she'd shown them on arrival. They were heating one usable resting space on the agreed limited schedule.Other occupied rooms and the site's existing families still had their claims on fuel and work. The night arrangement had to fit around them.Nell agreed that the three crew members could share this room with the household for the first night, within its checked temporary capacity and clear exits. Their work-bay agreement remained se

Chapter: Chapter 118 The Place That Needs WorkDisaster day forty-one July 13Nell was holding the door against the wind when they arrived.Nessa had imagined recognizing the packing building with relief. Instead she saw the loose weather panel beside its window, the muddy unloading passage and the woman bracing her shoulder against a door that still needed another pair of hands. She parked where Nell indicated and waited for the utility vehicle's movement to finish before getting out.“Everyone?” Nell asked.“All eight.”Nell looked past her at the occupied seats, then nodded. “Bring the people in first.”There was room to rest temporarily in the day space while the allocated staff room was finished. Its ordinary work would continue around them. The glasshouses beyond the yard remained cold, damaged places, however pretty their frames had looked from the road in June.Owen got out after the passage was cleared. Leila brought Ada, who had stopped asking whether they were nearly there. Tamsin carried the bags Owen wanted beside him

Chapter: Chapter 117 A Bridge Still StandingDisaster day forty-one July 13The bridge looked whole. After the morning they'd had, Nessa wanted that to be enough. Its narrow deck crossed a deep drainage cut between dark banks. Water moved far below, carrying branches against the stones. The road on the other side climbed toward the reservoir route and Alder. The crossing supervisor was studying the two vehicles rather than the view.“You wait for the assessment,” she said. “Standing isn't the same as ready for your load.”Nessa closed the map.The workers had fresh information on the damaged approach and the usable crossing. Their checks still had to account for the actual vehicles, passengers and cargo. Rory supplied his vehicle information and the crew's load record. Nessa brought hers without trying to turn a departure list into an engineering judgment. There were questions she couldn't answer. She said so and waited while the people responsible completed their work.Owen asked how long they expected the assessment to take. Chapter: Chapter 116 The Sound Behind ThemDisaster day forty-one July 13At first, the pickup was simply another vehicle on the same road.Nessa kept it in the mirrors without turning every glimpse into a conclusion. The upper route was open to other travellers. They weren't the only people trying to get past yesterday's damage. Then it closed the gap she was leaving behind her.Owen looked from the mirror to her hands.“I see it,” she said. She told Iona over the radio. Rory confirmed the next staffed holding point before the crossing. They would follow the checked route there. No one would stop alone to ask a following driver what he wanted. The pickup's horn sounded.Nessa could feel the noise in the back of her neck. She kept her eyes on the road ahead and let Rory's current report guide the distance between their vehicles. At the next bend, the pickup moved out as though to pass, then dropped back before the narrow section. Its passenger pointed at the rear of her van.She couldn't tell what he was saying through the gla

Chapter: Chapter 115 What Went MissingDisaster day forty-one July 13The six-liter case wasn't in the utility vehicle.Tamsin checked the space a second time, then came back to Nessa with her gloves still hanging from one hand.“Don't cross the water off yet.”Nessa stopped writing.Across the yard, Rory and a depot worker were finishing the vehicle inspection. The morning route report had finally arrived, with a departure window for the next checked section. Nobody had promised to hold that window while they searched every corner of the depot.“Last place you saw it?” Nessa asked.“The staging bay. Blue handle. I checked the closure before we left it there.”Nessa went to look. The bay contained a folded cover, two site containers and the rough board that had caught the crew case. Their water wasn't among them. She felt the old, ugly urge to decide what had happened before she had enough facts. A stranger near their load. Somebody taking advantage. A person inside the group who had failed her.Tamsin was already looking
