Axel cleared his throat multiple times when his skin touched Vida's, but she stood there with confusion written all over her. She could not understand her father's actions and the reason behind them. She was sure it was probably the side effect of him having been in a semi-coma. Instead of asking him the reason and going round and round in circles, she quietly removed her hand, which made them all take their hands off. She pulled up the small chair and sat beside his bed, taking his hand and gently tracing the pulsing veins.
"Everyone thinks that I am a bad child," she began.
"Who thinks that my Vida is a bad child, and how dare they think that?" John asked. Anyone could see the bond that the father and daughter shared and how comfortable they were around each other. It would make one wonder why Vida was so comfortable staying so far away from her father; at least that was what was running through Axel's mind at that time.
"Everyone," she said in a stressed voice. "The nurses were looking at me as a bad child who let her father suffer while she was away trying to fulfil all of her heart's desires without thinking of anyone else."
"You and I know that it is not like that, so you do not have to worry about what anyone else says."
"Do I not have to worry about what anyone else says?" she asked with a frown. I don't have to worry about them, but still, they are speaking, and it is hurting me," she added in a lower tone this time. You know that I would have dropped it all without a thought and flown into the country the moment you needed me, and all you did was keep it away from me," she said.
She felt the atmosphere was a bit settled now, and she could speak and scold her father for letting her be in the dark about him for such a long time. "What am I working for if you are sick and lying in bed? You know very well that I would leave all I am doing just to be by your side."
"And that is too much of a price for you to pay and for me to ask."
"What?" She did not expect to hear such a statement from him. He had given all he had to make sure that she had a fantastic childhood even without her mother, so why wouldn't she want to do the same for him? "Why would you say that?"
"I know that if I had called you, you would leave all you had and come to take care of me, but what about your career, which you love so much and the life you were building for yourself? What about all of that?" he asked.
"All of that doesn't matter, and you know this," she said, patting down on the blanket that was covering the lower part of his body.
"I know, and it made me feel burdened. I did not want to be the father who stopped his daughter from achieving what she wanted to do. I had dreams of you taking over my company, but you chose another path, and I wanted to be happy for you and support you as much as I could," he said, and it almost made her cry to hear him say that to her. "And I was not alone; I had plenty of help; James helped me, Maria helped me, and even Axel here was of great help. He took care of me and helped with the business."
Vida was supposed to be happy that her father got help when he needed it but she could not help but feel angry that he was showing up here again and taking her place. She cleared her throat, trying to mask her anger. If she flared up in anger, how was she supposed to explain it to her father?
John did not notice the shift in her emotions, but somehow Axel noticed and excused himself with incoherent words. Vida was glad he was gone; at least now she could be alone with her father for the first time since she came to the city.
"Did you not miss me, or were you okay with the new child you adopted?" she asked.
"New child? Did I adopt a child?"
"Axel, I am talking about Axel," she said, frowning, thinking that her father was pulling a prank on her.
"Axel?" he asked and laughed, throwing her into confusion. It was not supposed to be funny, but he was laughing. "Axel is not my child? I did not adopt him," he announced, and for some reason, she felt relieved to hear him say that. "He is not my child; he is your husband-to-be."
Vida had been sure that she would not feel nervous, but here she was, sweating on her palms. The wedding that her friend had planned for her was finally taking shape, and she was grateful for her at least. Maria came into the bride's room, and from the mirror, Vida saw her but immediately diverted her eyes. She was still angry about what she had found out by chance. Who knows what could have gone on between her and her father when she was away? How many more secrets did her father hold from her?"Can you please leave us?" Marai asked these vendors who were working in the room. As if on command, they all stood up, left whatever it was they were doing and left only two of them in the room. "Vida, can we talk?" Maria began walking towards her."About what? Do we have anything to talk about?" Vida asked her words dripping with poison laced in them."Of course we do; it seems you are mad at me and I have no idea what I have done to make you this way," Maria replied, and Vida cleared her th
Even though Vida had gone against it so many times, her friends were adamant about throwing her a bachelorette party. "It's still your wedding," Gia had commented when Vida refused, and then she just gave in, knowing she was not going to win against the three of them. She promised herself that she was not going to enjoy anything about it; the party was forced on her just like the wedding between her and Axel. The party was all a blur and no matter what her friends did to try and lift her spirits, all she could do was to sulk. Even when Kat had brought in a male stripper, she stood up abruptly and left. "I am in no mood for this," she said, standing up, causing her friends to stand as well. "I am going to get some air," she added and left before anyone could ask her any questions or follow her.She had never thought that her bachelorette party would be this way; she had always imagined herself being so happy about it that she would want to go all out and do all the things brides-to-be
Vida knew she was childish to ignore Maria like that but since she still could not bring herself to talk to the woman, she decided that this was the best thing to do."My Vida? How is breakfast?" Maria asked, trying to get a reaction from her. This was not the way she usually reacted to her cooking, and she was worried. With the way she stormed out yesterday, she was worried she had done or said something to hurt her feelings. She replayed the conversation a thousand times in her head while she was trying to drift to bed and concluded that it was just a normal conversation. They had not brought up Axel, who was a trigger for her, and everything seemed normal, so why was she being so erratic?"Fine," Vida murmured, barely audible. She dropped the toast on the table and pushed the seat behind her before she stormed out of the room. After the humiliation at the company and the interaction with her nanny, she had decided that she was going to really expose Axel after the year they would s
Vida walked in angrily and threw her phone on the bed. She was so angry at the situation; how dare he? She thought he was at least not as bad as she thought. Her phone was ringing nonstop, but she made up her mind to ensure that she did not get his call, no matter how many times he tried to reach out. He and his minion, who had wanted to embarrass her, could go to hell for all she cared. After steaming in anger for a few minutes, she decided to let it go because she might do something crazy if she did not. She went down to get something cool to drink. As she got into the kitchen, she saw her nanny busy there. She was suddenly taken back to her childhood days when she would get back to see the woman busy trying to make a meal for herself and her dad."Do you ever take a break?" Maria turns back with a smile on her face."Oh my Vida How can I ever take a break? I have to make sure that everything goes according to plan," she responded, turning off the stove and walking to the girl."It
Axel was left stunned by her reaction; he had been sure that things were getting better between them, but every time he seemed to be getting through to her, something came up and ruined the whole thing. He knew that going after her was going to be wasted effort, so he knew he had to find out what had happened in the ladies' room, as that was when everything changed. He walked into the room with all eyes on him, wondering what had just happened."Are we to continue the meeting without her?" One of the men found the courage to ask on behalf of everyone else.'Continue," Axel said, sitting in his chair. He was going to observe everyone there to know what had happened. He stared at a woman in particular, as he was sure she was the one behind the entire thing. She had stood up to go to the ladies' at the same time that Vida had gone and it was after the encounter that she came out angry and throwing a tantrum."Ms Andrea?" he said, stopping the meeting. The room fell dead silent as everyon
Vida got ready with Emily's help and brought her to the meeting venue. Axel had made sure to tell her that it was a brunch meeting, and she was glad that it would not be anything too formal for her. She walked in with the bodyguards that Axel had stationed outside to help her find her way in. As she walked, she felt her leg lose strength. One of the guards opened the door, and she saw Axel's eyes meet hers from the far end of the room. He had been staring at the door, waiting for her to come so the meeting could commence. He smiled a little and stood up from the head of the table, walking to her."You can leave now," he murmured to the guard before standing beside her and putting his hand to the small of her back to guide her through the large hall. "Don't be scared," he added in a whisper, and she whipped her head to him, wondering how he had figured out what she was feeling in that moment. She always knew that this moment was going to come, but still, she was not ready for it, no ma
