By the time they stepped out of the house, the sun was already fully gone down and darkness was beginning to creep around. Axel drove them to the ring shop and she was kind of impressed at the brand name he brought her until she remembered that he was truly a big shot around there. Vida had always hated flying; it was one of the things that came with luxury that she did not fancy. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath as she heard the pilot announce decent. She had never taken off the seatbelt and had been strapped since she got on the plane. If not for the love she had for her father, she would never think of getting on a plane. Vida walked back to the room with James tailing her; she did not want to have the conversation there in the open, so she asked him to follow her. "What does the doctor mean by a second heart attack?" she asked as soon as she heard the door close. "Does that mean that there was a first one? If there was a first one, then why was nothing done about it? Why did you and all the medical staff allow it to degenerate this way? What was the problem?" she ranted, the words pouring from her mouth all at once. Vida frowned. She did not like the way James fussed over him like he was a child who could not do anything for himself. Axel sat there, staring at her from the other side of the room. Vida took her eyes off him and focused on James. They were having a conversation before they were rudely interrupted by Axel. "I was saying," she began in a tight tone with her nose in the air. Both men cast their eyes on her, ready to hear what she had to say. "The doctor was telling me about his guardian, and I don't understand what he meant by that." "Oh," James exclaimed, his eyes lighting up with understanding as he nodded. Vida cast him an expression, hoping that it was speaking for itself and that she did not need to ask him to explain his exclamation. "Are you not going to explain?" A nurse came in and told them that visiting hours were over and they needed to leave. Vida wanted to protest and say she was going to stay and take care of her dad, but there was a caretaker, and if she was being honest with herself, she would only be a liability if she remained there. Moreover, she needed rest after the long flight she had. As they stepped out of the room, she noticed Axel making his way to her, but she managed to slip out without having to talk to him. She already did not like him, so she was not going to stand there and have a lengthy conversation with him. She stepped into the Van Allen mansion and memories of her childhood filled her mind. She remembered running up and down the staircase while painting over the walls that had all been repainted when she turned into a teenager, and she remembered being a moody teenager while still living there. The house was pretty much the same, and everything felt the same aside from the fact that she felt replaced by that man—

"Little miss?" a voice called from her door, startling her. Vida did not understand why she was so jumpy that morning. She sighed, taking off the covers from her body and walking to the door. After breakfast, Vida knew that she had to stop feeling sorry for herself and get on with life; things could get better and she was sure of it. She looked at the time and when she knew she could go see her father in the hospital, she got dressed and went there immediately. Vida pulled the covers over herself and stared at the closed window blinds. She did not know how long she had been awake, but she knew it was such a long time. She did not want to get out of bed as she thought over everything she had gone through in the past few days and how much it was taking a toll on her. She felt like she needed some more peace in her life, and she was not getting anything there. Since she got back to the city, all she could think about was how things would have been different if she had not moved away after her education; if she had come back and learnt the ropes of the business, would she have been able to save it from getting to this stage? Would she have been able to take better care of her father to make sure he did not suffer a second heart attack?
