22– Gabrielle

I was a fool.

I was so fucking stupid.

The memory of my mother’s voice—shrill, calculating, and dripping with venom—played on an endless, looping torment in my head.

I couldn’t believe that I had let her poison sink its hooks so deep that I had actually hurled those words at Kayden.

How could I have looked him in the eye and told him I was ashamed of him?

Me? Ashamed to be associated with Kayden Alvarez?

The thought made my stomach heave.

I scrambled up to my room, shoving whatever clothes my hands brushed against into my suitcase, and bolted back downstairs.

The suitcase hit the backseat with a thud. I rounded the car, threw myself into the driver’s side, and peeled out of Kayden’s driveway before my brain could fully catch up with my racing pulse.

My trembling thumb found Arthur’s contact by muscle memory.

“Gabrielle?” Arthur’s thick voice buzzed through the speaker, sounding heavy like I interrupted something.

“Hey, Arthur,” I rushed out, my voice cracking at the edges. “Quick question, that sports medicine doctor friend of yours in Montreal, is she still taking private consultations?”

“Yes, why?” Arthur questioned, the heaviness instantly stripping away from his tone.

“Can she meet with Kayden today?” I demanded, blowing right past his question.

“If it’s necessary,” he responded slowly.

“It’s necessary,” I blurted out, gripping the steering wheel so tight my knuckles turned white.

Silence stretched across the line. I could practically hear the gears grinding in Arthur’s head, calculating the fallout.

I knew he was waiting for an explanation, but I couldn't bring myself to say it out loud. If I admitted what I witnessed, it’d feel like betraying the fragile, bruised pieces of Kayden’s pride.

The humiliation I had seen in his eyes told me everything I needed to know: he hated that I had witnessed his weakness more than he hated the pain his father inflicted.

“Arthur—”

“I need to know why, Gabrielle,” he cut in, his voice becoming authoritative. “Did you get into trouble? Did Kayden get into trouble? Just how big of a crisis are we looking at here?”

“One question at a time, please.”

“I would’ve extended that courtesy if I was remotely sure you’d answer any of them.”

I bit down hard on my bottom lip, tasting the metallic tang of blood. A shuddering sigh tore its way out of my chest. “Kayden needs this, Arthur. He’s hurt, and I know him. He wouldn't forfeit tomorrow’s game for anything on this earth. I just… I have to help him.”

“How did he get hurt?”

“I can’t tell you that.”

“Is it something that’s going to leak to the press? Do we need to prep for a PR cleanup?”

“I don't think it’ll come to that. I just need him functional enough to get on the ice tomorrow without collapsing.”

“You got it, Gabrielle,” Arthur sighed on the other end.

“Really?”

“Yes. Provided the blowback doesn't trace back to my desk.”

“I promise you it won't,” I breathed. “Thank you, Arthur. This… God, this means everything to me.”

Even if I could never claw back the words I had spewed at Kayden, at least I could salvage something. At least I could move mountains behind his back to make sure he did what he liked doing best.

Adrenaline was still high in my bloodstream, making it difficult to get a firm grasp of my steering wheel.

Every word, every venomous accusation my mother had planted in my head last night had just been shattered into pieces.

He isn't a manipulative user.

Kayden wasn't a spoiled, entitled playboy playing a long game to secure endorsements.

He was a protector.

He was a survivor fighting a silent, horrific war behind closed doors while the entire world cheered for his perfection on the ice.

He had literally thrown his own body into the line of fire to take a blow meant for me, right after I had told him I was ashamed to be associated with him.

Fuck me but my pride didn’t matter anymore.

I didn't care if Kayden hated me, and I didn't care if he yelled at me to get the fuck away from him again.

I finally swerved into the airfield and slammed my car into park, and sprinted out.

Once I was cleared to pass the gates—which was a few agonizing seconds, I ran toward the plane stairs. The players were almost all inside.

And then I spotted him.

Kayden was standing at the very base of the stairs, his hand gripped white-knuckled around the railing.

His hoodie was pulled over his face, his dark shades masking his eyes, his head lowered as his shoulders hitched.

He was moving in slow motion, trying to find the strength to lift his foot to the first step without collapsing from the pain.

“Kayden!” I shouted over the roaring of the jet turbines.

He froze. Slowly, stiffly, he turned his head around.

“I told you to leave me alone, Gabrielle,” he ground out, his voice a rough, gravelly whisper that barely carried over the engine noise.

“Why should I leave you alone? I’m still your girlfriend,” I muttered.

He scoffed bitterly. “Not anymore.”

“Then as your handler—”

“You don’t work for me anymore, Gabrielle,” he said, his voice bored.

“Really?” I stepped closer, batting my lashes. “So you’re going to throw me away now? After you’ve dragged me into the spotlight?”

I wasn’t seeing Kayden’s eyes, but I could swear he just rolled them at me.

“I don’t have time for this,” his voice rumbled low in his throat.

I reached for him and he moved out of the way, letting my hand just hover in the air.

“I’m not letting you travel by yourself in this state,” I breathed. “I don’t care if you don’t want me here, but you—”

Kayden turned his back on me before I could even finish, his fingers tightening on the railing as he forced his foot up the first step. “Go home, Gabrielle Rose. You don't work for me anymore.”

This asshole.

Fuck… I needed to calm down.

I swallowed hard and marched up to the base of the stairs, stepping into his path. I didn't flinch away from his anger. I reached out, my fingers catching the edge of his sleeve, refusing to let him take another step up those stairs without me.

“You can fire me as your handler, Alvarez,” I told him, my heart hammering a fierce rhythm against my ribs. “But you don't get to be in pain on my watch. Move over.”

Since I had been working with Kayden for six months, I had never once seen him deliriously drunk. Not once.I had seen him tipsy. I had seen him hungover. I had seen him drink enough to become louder than usual at parties and cockier than usual around women. But I had never seen him like this. And honestly? It wasn’t a terrible sight. The man was a dramatic drunk. He talked a lot. He moved a lot. And, dare I say, he was the cutest when he was drunk.Well… That was until everything began falling apart.“Oh, God.” I tightened my grip around his waist as he stumbled beside me, nearly taking us both into the wall of the elevator. “Kayden.”“I’m fine,” he slurred. “Yeah? Well, that’s all thanks to me,” I replied, holding him tightly.“I was trying to avoid the wall,” he said. I stared at him. He stared back at me with the most serious expression I’d ever seen on his face. “I was.”“Of course you were.”The elevator doors slid shut behind us, trapping us inside the small, mirrored space.K

Kayden came to a fucking club.So naturally, as both his handler and his supposed girlfriend, I had to come after him.It was literally my job to babysit him, and he was making sure I put in the work.By the time I stepped into the club, I was furious. God, I was so fucking furious that putting it into words would just be a disservice to myself. The music was loud enough to vibrate through my chest, the bass pulsing beneath my feet as bodies moved around me in a blur of expensive clothes, flashing lights, and alcohol. Colored lights swept across the room, illuminating faces for half a second before plunging them back into darkness.I hated everything about this place. But mostly, I hated that I had come looking for one particular idiot, who I spotted almost immediately.Kayden was impossible to miss.He was sprawled across a booth near the back of the club, a bottle in one hand and a woman pressed so close to his side that there was barely enough space between them for air.Another wo

“I wasn’t cleared.”Silence.Coach stared at me as if he couldn’t decide whether to yell or simply walk away. “You weren’t cleared to play?”“I never said I was.”“Then why the hell were you on that ice?”I looked down at my hands.Because I didn’t know.Because sitting still with my thoughts had become unbearable.Because lying in that penthouse with Gabrielle beside me would’ve been worse.Because every time I closed my eyes, I heard her voice.I’m ashamed to be associated with you.Maybe I’d wanted the pain.Maybe I needed something loud enough to drown out everything else. But I wasn’t about to say any of that.So I looked back at my coach and answered, “Because there was a game and I wanted to play it.”The man had a look of disbelief on his face before, but it deepened even further. “That’s your excuse?”“It’s not an excuse. I’m explaining why I played.” “You think this is funny, Alvarez? You think you’re untouchable because you’re good?” He pointed at me. “You walk onto that r

What am I doing here? What am I doing here? What am I doing here? The voice in my head buzzed and buzzed and fucking buzzed. My life was a mess. The only thing I had was money, but even that didn’t matter.I was aching—literally and metaphorically. Why was I moving on this ice?Who was I enduring this pain for?My mother? She was long dead. I was sure her carcass wouldn’t care about what I did with my life.My father and the family he abandoned me for?Just so he could get more money from me.Gabrielle?Perhaps.She said she loved watching me on the ice.But in the same breath, she said she was ashamed of me.What was it about me that caused her to be ashamed? Was it my physical appearance? Was it my nonchalance? Was it the crazy things the tabloids wrote about me on a daily basis?Perhaps it was because I inherited my mother’s broken heart. But that wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t my fault that I was born with a broken heart and a mind that often drove me to the edge.It wasn’t my fault.

The air inside the penthouse had become suffocating. It had nothing to do with the temperature. The room was cool enough that I could feel the air-conditioning brushing against my skin every time I moved. But somehow, every breath I took felt thick, as though the oxygen had been replaced with something heavier.Something I had to fight my way through.Kayden and I had barely spoken since the doctor left. And yet, the silence between us was the loudest I'd ever heard.I couldn’t even blame Kayden for it.I had spent the entire day pushing him around.Eat this.Take your medication.Lie down.Don’t go out.Don’t drink.Listen to me.And when he fought me, I’d fought harder.Everything I had done had been for his own good. I knew that. I could justify every decision I’d made if I had to.But that didn’t mean I hadn’t been difficult. And maybe that was why I couldn’t stop thinking about the way he’d looked at me earlier.Like he couldn’t understand me.Honestly, I couldn’t understand myse

“Good news,” the doctor said, closing the medical bag at her feet. “It’s not broken.”The breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding escaped me.“But he’s so heavily bruised that I’m tempted to ask what happened.” Her eyes flicked briefly toward the bedroom. “But because my discretion was requested, I’ll not ask.”I gave her a grateful smile. “Thank you.”“I also want to advise against playing tomorrow.” She smiled back at me. “But Mr. Alvarez doesn’t exactly look like a man who can be reasoned with.”A reluctant smile tugged at my lips. That was one way to put it.“So, in the end, I can only provide the best treatment I can in such a short amount of time and hope for the best outcome.” She picked up the small tube of ointment she’d prescribed and handed it to me. “Make sure he takes the painkillers. And massage his ribs with the ointment every hour.”“Okay.” I nodded. “Got it.”“And make sure he gets enough rest. It’ll help his body heal itself at least.”“Alright.” I nodded again, me
