21– Kayden

The seat beneath me hummed with the steady vibration of the engine, but the only thing I could feel was the blinding, white-hot pain radiating from the left side of my torso.

Every shallow breath I dragged into my lungs felt like an ice pick driving into my lungs.

I stared at my reflection in the rear view mirror.

My face was bruised, blood gathering in my left eye.

My chin trembled as I stared at the mess I was. A tear slipped down my cheek, I eased it away, wincing because every movement just sent a flood of pain through me.

“Are you okay?” The driver’s voice broke through the suffocating silence, his eyes anxious in the rearview mirror.

“Mm…” I hummed. “I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not.”

“No, I’m not,” I agreed. “But what can I do?”

“You can stop tolerating this,” the driver said, his voice firm. “You can put an end to it if you want.”

“Why should I? He’s my father.”

“No father should do that to his son.”

“It’s not like he does it all the time,” I muttered, trying to find any excuse to hold on to. “It’s a once in a while occurrence. I’ll be fine. It’ll be fine.”

The driver was silent for a moment, just staring at me like I had suddenly grown two heads. He drummed his fingers against the steering wheel. Once. Twice. Three times.

“Mr. Alvarez,” he spoke again. “With all due respect, look at the state he put you in. You have a game tomorrow. How in the hell are you supposed to play when you can’t even stand straight.”

I stifled a sniffle, looking out the window.

There was nothing I could say.

No one would be able to understand how I felt.

At the end of the day, Kane was my father. I couldn’t bear the thought of throwing him behind bars over something as trivial as this.

“Maybe we should divert to the emergency clinic downtown.”

“No,” I choked out, the word costing me a sharp jolt of pain that made my vision blur. I gripped the armrest until my knuckles cracked. “Just take me to the airfield.”

“But the team doctor isn't at the hangar yet. If you have a fractured bone, boarding a pressurized cabin—”

“I said no!” I growled, my voice cracking under the strain. “I am not going to a hospital. I am going to Montreal. If you don’t want to drive this car to the airfield, get out and let me do it.”

“Kayden—”

“Just please… stop talking.” My chin trembled as tears melted into my cheeks. “This is my career. This is all I know. And my coach will be disappointed if he finds me in this state just before a game.”

“I’m sorry…” The driver swallowed hard, his posture stiffening as he cut a tense glance at the mirror before stepping harder on the gas.

I leaned my head back against the headrest, my chest heaving erratically. The pain was a welcome distraction. It was nothing compared to the crushing wave of shame drowning my mind.

She saw.

The thought burned through my brain, and it was even more painful than any hit I took from my father.

Gabrielle had seen everything.

She saw me being reduced to a bleeding boy begging on his knees.

I spent six months playing the cocky, untouchable role just to get her to notice me, and in a moment, she had seen the weakest, most pathetic version of who I really was.

She had seen the monster I ran from.

She had seen me get broken.

The humiliation made me feel sick to my stomach.

I couldn’t bear the thought of the pity in her eyes. I didn’t want her sympathy.

I ran away from there to get her away from me, to save whatever tiny shred of dignity I had left, but the mental image of her kneeling over me was a scar that wouldn't heal.

With shaking fingers, I frantically rummaged through the front pocket of my gear bag until I finally fished out a pair of thick, dark shades.

I jammed them over my eyes, shielding the rapidly bruising skin around my cheekbone from the light. Then, I grabbed the fabric of my gray hoodie, pulling it over my head. I yanked the drawstrings down, tighter and tighter, until the fabric bunched over my nose.

I buried myself deep into the shadow of the hood, hiding from the world.

Montreal was the only thing left. The ice was the only place where I had any control, where nobody could touch me, and where Kane couldn't reach me.

I was going to play even if it killed me.

The moment we reached the field and I stepped out, my coach’s eyes cut to me.

“What’s with the dressing, Alvarez?!” he called out from where he was standing.

“Nothing, coach. Just trying out something new.”

“No lying, Alvarez!”

How laughable.

“I have a cold,” I said.

He started towards me, stopping only a few paces away. “Did you get tested?”

I shook my head.

“You’re clutching your sides,” he observed.

I swallowed hard. “It hurts to breathe.”

“Are you sure it’s a cold?” He stepped forward:

I took a subtle step back. “Yes, coach.”

“Are you certain you can play in this state? It’s best you sit this one out and recover.”

I was silent for a moment. Even hearing the suggestion felt like I was being hit all over again.

I gritted my teeth and dropped my hand from my ribs, shoving it into my pocket. Then I forced myself to stand straight.

“It’s just a cold, coach. I can handle myself.”

His dissecting gaze traveled over my frame slowly. “Are you sure, Alvarez?”

I exhaled. “Why don’t we get to Montreal and let me show you.”

Since I had been working with Kayden for six months, I had never once seen him deliriously drunk. Not once.I had seen him tipsy. I had seen him hungover. I had seen him drink enough to become louder than usual at parties and cockier than usual around women. But I had never seen him like this. And honestly? It wasn’t a terrible sight. The man was a dramatic drunk. He talked a lot. He moved a lot. And, dare I say, he was the cutest when he was drunk.Well… That was until everything began falling apart.“Oh, God.” I tightened my grip around his waist as he stumbled beside me, nearly taking us both into the wall of the elevator. “Kayden.”“I’m fine,” he slurred. “Yeah? Well, that’s all thanks to me,” I replied, holding him tightly.“I was trying to avoid the wall,” he said. I stared at him. He stared back at me with the most serious expression I’d ever seen on his face. “I was.”“Of course you were.”The elevator doors slid shut behind us, trapping us inside the small, mirrored space.K

Kayden came to a fucking club.So naturally, as both his handler and his supposed girlfriend, I had to come after him.It was literally my job to babysit him, and he was making sure I put in the work.By the time I stepped into the club, I was furious. God, I was so fucking furious that putting it into words would just be a disservice to myself. The music was loud enough to vibrate through my chest, the bass pulsing beneath my feet as bodies moved around me in a blur of expensive clothes, flashing lights, and alcohol. Colored lights swept across the room, illuminating faces for half a second before plunging them back into darkness.I hated everything about this place. But mostly, I hated that I had come looking for one particular idiot, who I spotted almost immediately.Kayden was impossible to miss.He was sprawled across a booth near the back of the club, a bottle in one hand and a woman pressed so close to his side that there was barely enough space between them for air.Another wo

“I wasn’t cleared.”Silence.Coach stared at me as if he couldn’t decide whether to yell or simply walk away. “You weren’t cleared to play?”“I never said I was.”“Then why the hell were you on that ice?”I looked down at my hands.Because I didn’t know.Because sitting still with my thoughts had become unbearable.Because lying in that penthouse with Gabrielle beside me would’ve been worse.Because every time I closed my eyes, I heard her voice.I’m ashamed to be associated with you.Maybe I’d wanted the pain.Maybe I needed something loud enough to drown out everything else. But I wasn’t about to say any of that.So I looked back at my coach and answered, “Because there was a game and I wanted to play it.”The man had a look of disbelief on his face before, but it deepened even further. “That’s your excuse?”“It’s not an excuse. I’m explaining why I played.” “You think this is funny, Alvarez? You think you’re untouchable because you’re good?” He pointed at me. “You walk onto that r

What am I doing here? What am I doing here? What am I doing here? The voice in my head buzzed and buzzed and fucking buzzed. My life was a mess. The only thing I had was money, but even that didn’t matter.I was aching—literally and metaphorically. Why was I moving on this ice?Who was I enduring this pain for?My mother? She was long dead. I was sure her carcass wouldn’t care about what I did with my life.My father and the family he abandoned me for?Just so he could get more money from me.Gabrielle?Perhaps.She said she loved watching me on the ice.But in the same breath, she said she was ashamed of me.What was it about me that caused her to be ashamed? Was it my physical appearance? Was it my nonchalance? Was it the crazy things the tabloids wrote about me on a daily basis?Perhaps it was because I inherited my mother’s broken heart. But that wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t my fault that I was born with a broken heart and a mind that often drove me to the edge.It wasn’t my fault.

The air inside the penthouse had become suffocating. It had nothing to do with the temperature. The room was cool enough that I could feel the air-conditioning brushing against my skin every time I moved. But somehow, every breath I took felt thick, as though the oxygen had been replaced with something heavier.Something I had to fight my way through.Kayden and I had barely spoken since the doctor left. And yet, the silence between us was the loudest I'd ever heard.I couldn’t even blame Kayden for it.I had spent the entire day pushing him around.Eat this.Take your medication.Lie down.Don’t go out.Don’t drink.Listen to me.And when he fought me, I’d fought harder.Everything I had done had been for his own good. I knew that. I could justify every decision I’d made if I had to.But that didn’t mean I hadn’t been difficult. And maybe that was why I couldn’t stop thinking about the way he’d looked at me earlier.Like he couldn’t understand me.Honestly, I couldn’t understand myse

“Good news,” the doctor said, closing the medical bag at her feet. “It’s not broken.”The breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding escaped me.“But he’s so heavily bruised that I’m tempted to ask what happened.” Her eyes flicked briefly toward the bedroom. “But because my discretion was requested, I’ll not ask.”I gave her a grateful smile. “Thank you.”“I also want to advise against playing tomorrow.” She smiled back at me. “But Mr. Alvarez doesn’t exactly look like a man who can be reasoned with.”A reluctant smile tugged at my lips. That was one way to put it.“So, in the end, I can only provide the best treatment I can in such a short amount of time and hope for the best outcome.” She picked up the small tube of ointment she’d prescribed and handed it to me. “Make sure he takes the painkillers. And massage his ribs with the ointment every hour.”“Okay.” I nodded. “Got it.”“And make sure he gets enough rest. It’ll help his body heal itself at least.”“Alright.” I nodded again, me
