27– Kayden

What am I doing here?

What am I doing here?

What am I doing here?

The voice in my head buzzed and buzzed and fucking buzzed.

My life was a mess.

The only thing I had was money, but even that didn’t matter.

I was aching—literally and metaphorically.

Why was I moving on this ice?

Who was I enduring this pain for?

My mother?

She was long dead. I was sure her carcass wouldn’t care about what I did with my life.

My father and the family he abandoned me for?

Just so he could get more money from me.

Gabrielle?

Perhaps.

She said she loved watching me on the ice.

But in the same breath, she said she was ashamed of me.

What was it about me that caused her to be ashamed?

Was it my physical appearance?

Was it my nonchalance?

Was it the crazy things the tabloids wrote about me on a daily basis?

Perhaps it was because I inherited my mother’s broken heart.

But that wasn’t my fault.

It wasn’t my fault that I was born with a broken heart and a mind that often drove me to the edge.

It wasn’t my fault.

And yet—

A body barreled into me.

I had forgotten that I was on the ice for a moment, just lost in my stupid mind.

I tried to catch myself, but my skates gave out and I hit the ground.

Pain shot through my ribs so violently that my vision blurred. For half a second, I lay there, staring at the ceiling of the arena, trying to drag air into my lungs.

But instead of staying down and trying to hold myself together, I lunged toward my opponent who had barreled into me, taking him down with me.

And the next thing?

It was red.

Red was all I saw.

My fist kept moving and the chaos kept rising around me until I was practically dragged off like an untamed beast.

And then, when it all came back to me, I was sitting on a bench in the locker room with my coach standing over me and my teammates looming around, looking tense.

Why were they all here?

Did the game end already?

“Look at me when I’m talking to you, Alvarez!”

“I’m looking, Coach,” I said.

I wasn’t looking at him.

My eyes were trained on the small space near the door where I could see Gabrielle’s leg.

Why was she there?

Why did she have to be around whenever I was in an embarrassing situation?

“Your actions today cost us a win!” My coach roared. “We were two points ahead, Alvarez, but you ruined our chances for us!”

“He purposely barreled into me.”

“Before that, Alvarez, you were playing a selfish game on that rink today!” My coach stepped closer. “You didn’t carry your teammates along. You made it seem like it was a Kayden Alvarez game, and you were fouled multiple times! Where was your head?”

I finally looked at him. “My head was on the game.”

“Bullshit!” The word cracked through the room. “Your head was everywhere except the game. You were skating like you had something to prove to everyone in that arena.”

I rolled my eyes. “Maybe I did.”

His nostrils flared.“And that is exactly the fucking problem.”

I leaned back against the bench. My ribs protested immediately. I ignored them.

Coach’s eyes dropped briefly to the way I was holding my side before coming back to my face.

“Your ribs are still hurting?” he asked.

“I’m fine,” I breathed.

“Don’t lie to me, Alvarez. You can barely sit up without wincing.”

“I said I’m fine.”

“You told me it was a cold, but look at your bloody eye, Alvarez. Did you get into a fight?” he asked.

I instinctively reached up, my fingers brushing beneath my left eye. “No, coach.”

“So what’s wrong with your eye?”

“Nothing.”

“Nothing?”

“It’s a clot,” I answered.

“A clot?” he repeated, chuckling incredulously. “Do you know how someone can get a clot like that? When they’re hit in the eye. So I’ll ask again: did you get into a fight, Kayden Alvarez?”

I didn’t offer him a response. It was out in the open and there was no need to continue lying about it. But I wasn’t willing to admit it.

Since he was so smart, he could draw a conclusion on his own. I couldn’t care less.

Coach slapped a hand over his face, his breath coming in sharp heaves. He dragged the hand across his face and into his hair, fisting his strands hard.

“What is my one rule during a season, Alvarez?” he asked, his voice thick.

“No fighting.”

“No fighting,” he echoed. “And yet, here you are, a walking proof that you got yourself into a fight that left you in a terrible physical condition.”

The locker room went unnaturally quiet.

I inhaled a long, steadying breath. “I did not get into a fight, coach.”

“Then what the fuck am I looking at?!”

I didn’t say anything.

He stepped closer, his voice lowering in disbelief. “Did you see a doctor?”

“Yes.” I nodded.

“And what did the doctor say?”

“That I’d live.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

I shrugged again.

Coach dragged a hand down his face. “You’re unbelievable.”

“That’s what I’ve been told.”

“And your ribs?” he asked, his care bleeding over the anger he must’ve been feeling. “Is the pain as a result of whatever you got yourself into?”

I nodded.

“Anything broken?”

“No,” I responded.

“Who cleared you to play?”

I didn’t answer.

His eyes narrowed. “Alvarez—”

“I wasn’t cleared.”

Since I had been working with Kayden for six months, I had never once seen him deliriously drunk. Not once.I had seen him tipsy. I had seen him hungover. I had seen him drink enough to become louder than usual at parties and cockier than usual around women. But I had never seen him like this. And honestly? It wasn’t a terrible sight. The man was a dramatic drunk. He talked a lot. He moved a lot. And, dare I say, he was the cutest when he was drunk.Well… That was until everything began falling apart.“Oh, God.” I tightened my grip around his waist as he stumbled beside me, nearly taking us both into the wall of the elevator. “Kayden.”“I’m fine,” he slurred. “Yeah? Well, that’s all thanks to me,” I replied, holding him tightly.“I was trying to avoid the wall,” he said. I stared at him. He stared back at me with the most serious expression I’d ever seen on his face. “I was.”“Of course you were.”The elevator doors slid shut behind us, trapping us inside the small, mirrored space.K

Kayden came to a fucking club.So naturally, as both his handler and his supposed girlfriend, I had to come after him.It was literally my job to babysit him, and he was making sure I put in the work.By the time I stepped into the club, I was furious. God, I was so fucking furious that putting it into words would just be a disservice to myself. The music was loud enough to vibrate through my chest, the bass pulsing beneath my feet as bodies moved around me in a blur of expensive clothes, flashing lights, and alcohol. Colored lights swept across the room, illuminating faces for half a second before plunging them back into darkness.I hated everything about this place. But mostly, I hated that I had come looking for one particular idiot, who I spotted almost immediately.Kayden was impossible to miss.He was sprawled across a booth near the back of the club, a bottle in one hand and a woman pressed so close to his side that there was barely enough space between them for air.Another wo

“I wasn’t cleared.”Silence.Coach stared at me as if he couldn’t decide whether to yell or simply walk away. “You weren’t cleared to play?”“I never said I was.”“Then why the hell were you on that ice?”I looked down at my hands.Because I didn’t know.Because sitting still with my thoughts had become unbearable.Because lying in that penthouse with Gabrielle beside me would’ve been worse.Because every time I closed my eyes, I heard her voice.I’m ashamed to be associated with you.Maybe I’d wanted the pain.Maybe I needed something loud enough to drown out everything else. But I wasn’t about to say any of that.So I looked back at my coach and answered, “Because there was a game and I wanted to play it.”The man had a look of disbelief on his face before, but it deepened even further. “That’s your excuse?”“It’s not an excuse. I’m explaining why I played.” “You think this is funny, Alvarez? You think you’re untouchable because you’re good?” He pointed at me. “You walk onto that r

The air inside the penthouse had become suffocating. It had nothing to do with the temperature. The room was cool enough that I could feel the air-conditioning brushing against my skin every time I moved. But somehow, every breath I took felt thick, as though the oxygen had been replaced with something heavier.Something I had to fight my way through.Kayden and I had barely spoken since the doctor left. And yet, the silence between us was the loudest I'd ever heard.I couldn’t even blame Kayden for it.I had spent the entire day pushing him around.Eat this.Take your medication.Lie down.Don’t go out.Don’t drink.Listen to me.And when he fought me, I’d fought harder.Everything I had done had been for his own good. I knew that. I could justify every decision I’d made if I had to.But that didn’t mean I hadn’t been difficult. And maybe that was why I couldn’t stop thinking about the way he’d looked at me earlier.Like he couldn’t understand me.Honestly, I couldn’t understand myse

“Good news,” the doctor said, closing the medical bag at her feet. “It’s not broken.”The breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding escaped me.“But he’s so heavily bruised that I’m tempted to ask what happened.” Her eyes flicked briefly toward the bedroom. “But because my discretion was requested, I’ll not ask.”I gave her a grateful smile. “Thank you.”“I also want to advise against playing tomorrow.” She smiled back at me. “But Mr. Alvarez doesn’t exactly look like a man who can be reasoned with.”A reluctant smile tugged at my lips. That was one way to put it.“So, in the end, I can only provide the best treatment I can in such a short amount of time and hope for the best outcome.” She picked up the small tube of ointment she’d prescribed and handed it to me. “Make sure he takes the painkillers. And massage his ribs with the ointment every hour.”“Okay.” I nodded. “Got it.”“And make sure he gets enough rest. It’ll help his body heal itself at least.”“Alright.” I nodded again, me
