Unexpected Night

Chapter 2

At the tender age of sixteen I made the decision to run away from home. Was it difficult? Of course it was but not for the reasons many may think. Growing up, my life wasn’t a fairytale despite what it may have looked like, my parents were wealthy and I needed or wanted nothing but their attention, their love, and their gentleness unfortunately though those words were not in my parents vocabulary instead they used violence and had both me and my brother growing up around petty thieves and criminals which is why when I decided to leave my childhood home I promised myself that i would never get involved with anything like that ever again.

“Cole Jones?” I suddenly ask in a low whisper as my eyes continue to look down at him, his smirk still present on his lips but his eyes were following my co-worker who apparently ran out without sputtering another word. I was still confused a little bit confused as to how this handsome stranger can inflict so much fear on anyone especially when he looks the way he does. I bite the inside of my cheek as I continue to watch him as he now averts his attention back onto me, his arm extending over the back of the booth, only this time  his smirk has transformed into a small sweet smile.

“Why don’t you take a seat sweetheart, I want to have a little talk with you.” He states to me and for some reason, my feet don’t seem to wait for my mind to process the command since I’m already moving and sliding myself into the booth. I can feel my cheeks reddening as soon as I realize that the handsome stranger whose name is Cole is still watching me with sultry eyes.

I clench my thighs together, licking my bottom lip as I wait for him to say something but he doesn’t. Instead, his eyes continue to roam down suddenly making me feel a little self-conscious about myself since he doesn’t say anything but when his smile got wider and his eyes got darker, my body relaxed and suddenly I heard his voice causing my arousal to grow stronger “How long have you been working here, darling?” He asked me, his head tilting off to the side a little bit.

I swallowed hard and took a few breaths before I was able to form a few coherent words that actually made sense and didn’t make me look like such an idiot.

“I’ve been working here for a little over two years.” I replied to him.

“Hmm, and why are you working here?” He retorts rather quickly and confidently. And I mean why shouldn’t he be confident.

“What’s it to you?” I narrowed my eyes on him and began wondering as to why he even cares.

He chuckles as he places both his hands on top of the table, intertwining them together as he stares me down making me shrink down a little bit onto my seat as I wait for him to answer my question, I know I sounded rude but then again this person whom I just met and is clearly feared and known by many then I have a right to ask why he’s so interested in my life all of a sudden.

“Can’t I try to make conversation with such a beautiful woman such as yourself?” He asked back with a smile. His piercing blue eyes once again looking down only this time I noticed that he was looking down at my lips so I licked them and bit the cushion of my bottom lip hoping that I cause a reaction and when I see him adjusting him with his hand, I smile as I feel rather proudly for actually making someone like him react.

“Why can’t you just answer the question, I mean why do you need to ask a question as a form to answer mine?” I sass out to him, bringing up my arms and crossing them across my chest, arching an eyebrow at him.

His smile widens once again and the silence between us is comfortable but before he could speak, I hear the chime of the bell letting me know that someone has just walked in and before I could get up and excuse myself to help the people who just walked in, Cole quickly stood up and walked over to the pair who just like my co-worker were looking at him as if they had just seen a ghost. They don’t last long before they are walking back out of the diner, and I watch him as he turns the sign over to the closed side and quickly walks back over, sliding into the booth and once again asks the question he had asked me a mere moment before, “So why are you working here?” He asks.

I let out a breath as I ran my fingers through my blonde locks. “I mean it pays the bills and this was the only place that would hire me.” I answer with a shrug.

“Hmm so you’re independent.” He says it more like a statement than a question, his eyes glimmering with interest and from what I can see he likes what he’s hearing but that still doesn’t answer why he’s so interested so much in why I work here.  “I want you” He flat out says, causing my jaw to drop down open and my eyes widening in shock. I watch as Cole chuckles in amusement and reaches over to me, caressing my jaw with his fingertips but slowly closes my mouth while licking his lips.

“Ho-how can you just s-say th-that?” I ask him with a stutter, mentally slapping myself for how stupid I must sound right now but based off the way he is looking at me right now I don’t think he really thinks of me that way, he arches an eyebrow up at me and narrows his eyes, it almost looked like as if he were thinking about what to say, the silence was once again comfortable and like last time it didn’t last long. “I’m not one to beat around the bush, Lili. I want something, I go for it and right now I really want you.” He says to me, emphasizing on the really in his sentence.

“I don’t mean any disrespect.” I start.

“Then don’t” He quickly added, interrupting me.

“But why me? Why do you want me?” I ask him in such a desperate tone. The 24 years of life that I've lived, nobody ever wanted me nor was I ever anyone's first choice which is why I wonder and feel erratically confused as to why Cole Jones wants me. “And aside from that, why do people look at you the way they do?.....Who the hello are you?” I ask him in such a rush that I feel myself run out of breath.

“You really don’t know who I am?” He asks me with a raised eyebrow. I simply nod my head and he instantly raises both of his eyebrows, the shock of my answer clearly seen on his face as we continue to look at each other. “Hmm, that’s a first but I like it. And the answer to  your other question Lili, I want you because you piqued my interest.” He says to me as if I knew what the hell he was talking about or what he meant by that. I simply raised an eyebrow and moved my head side to side then down a little bit. “Continue” I simply state.

He chuckles, rubbing his eyes and shrugs ``You didn’t treat me like other women usually do and I think you’re one of the most beautiful women I have ever met and as to who I am, we can save that for another day, how does that sound?” Wiggling his eyebrows trying to lighten up the mood a little bit.

I roll my eyes and laugh as well, shaking my head “I’m sorry but if you want me as much as you say then you’re going to have to give me answers. I don’t just sleep with someone because of their looks and besides I’m not really interested in being anyone’s booty call right now.”

“How do you know you’re going to just be my booty call?” He asked me.

“So you’re looking for something serious then?” I asked back, earning myself a defeated sigh from him. “Listen Cole, you don’t need to tell me exactly who you are or what you do but given the reactions you have gotten from people I kind of have an idea, therefore I don’t want any part of it.” I state and before he could say anything I stand up from the booth and quickly walk back into the kitchen, letting a few minutes pass before going back outside but when I do, I see that the booth that we were sitting at is now empty, hating the feeling of disappointment that I was mustering up from within inside of me. I sigh, biting my lip as I walk over to the booth to pick up the mug he was using.

As soon as I got there, I widened my eyes in shock when I saw the five hundred dollar bills that were perfectly lined up with each other along with a note on the top.

If you change your mind then give me a call ;)

I let out a sigh once again, hating the feeling of butterflies in my stomach, “Jesus Lili, you’re never satisfied with anything” I say to myself, placing both the money and the note inside of my apron, not knowing just how crazy my life was about to get once again.
