“Cat, do you have time to help me with something?” she called out.

“Sure, what do you need help with?” Cat asked.

“Can you help me go through all the weirdness files? You can transfer the phones to ring in here if you like. It just goes a lot faster with your help,” Lindsay said.

“I would love to. Maybe then I will understand more about what is going on around here,” Cat said.

“Do me a favor. When you figure it out, explain it to me,” Lindsay said, laughing.

“Your husband hasn’t told you?” Cat

“Why do men think that just because we are women, we can’t do anything and that what we do do won’t be as good as what they would do?” She asked as she started the car and turned around. “Does that ever change? Like, when I have ten or twenty years of experience, will they stop treating me like that?” “There will always be men who treat you like that. Didn’t you notice that I was being addressed the same way as you? Even though I do have the experience and the title, he still talked to me like that,” Lindsay told Annie. “It is so frustrating that people act like that. But, oh my gosh, that thing listened to me. I mean, that is the most awesome thing that has ever happened to me. I have had other things that have been awesome, but this is even more awesome than any of those. Does that mean that there is something special about me? Are you special? Is that why it listens to us?” Annie asked. “Those are excellent questions, Annie. I wish that I had answers to them for you,” Lindsay to

As they pulled toward the house, they could see an older man standing in front of the barn and waving to them. He had a look on his face of a man who had seen something he could not explain. “That would be the gentleman we need to speak to first. This is your call, Annie, so you get to run with it. I am just here for backup and to yell at the poltergeist if I need to,” Lindsay said, and she got out of the car. She slowly started to walk toward the man so that Annie could catch up. “Mr. Vega, I’m Deputy Huggins, and this is Sheriff Gold. How may we help you today?” Annie asked him. “Deputy, Sheriff, please call me Marty. I am sorry for bothering y’all today, but this is the craziest thing I have ever seen, and I didn’t know what else to do,” Mr. Vega told them, shaking his head as he looked at the ground. “That’s alright, Marty. That is what we are here for,” Annie told him. “Can you tell us what happened?” “Well, I was out here workin’ in the barn, and I saw my hammer go flying

“Actually, there is something that you can do for me. If you get time tonight, will you look through some of the files in these boxes and see if you can find anything that is described as red balls of light? Max and I encountered those this morning, and they were new to everyone.” Lindsay paused before she continued. “Also, if you have any questions about anything with this department or working in law enforcement, will you please ask someone? If it is something that you are embarrassed to ask one of the other deputies, you are always welcome to ask me. You will never get in trouble for asking a question,” Lindsay told her. Annie just smiled broadly and began nodding her head. Lindsay walked back to her office door and opened it. Annie bounced out and headed straight for Viktor. Lindsay smiled as she opened the blinds she had closed earlier. Viktor and Annie were complete opposites. Annie was tiny and barely came to his chest. Viktor was well over six feet and a bodybuilder. She watc

Deputy Annie Huggins bounced into the sheriff’s department fifteen minutes before she was to start. She had called in as on duty as soon as she had left her house. Annie always looked forward to going to work and doing the job she had wanted to do since she was a little girl. When she walked in, she saw Little Bob, Big Bob, and Viktor all gathered, speaking quietly together. Big Bob motioned for her to join them as soon as they saw her. “What’s up, guys? You all look like something big happened today. Is it something that I need to worry about?” Annie asked quickly. “Not much. Yes, and possibly are the answers to those questions,” Little Bob told her. Before he could say anything else, Deputy Andy Baxter came in to start his shift as well. Little Bob called to him, “Come and join the party, Andy. We need to fill you and Annie in on something.” Big Bob explained, “The sheriff’s mother-in-law is here for a visit. Because of this, the sheriff will be here a lot more than normal as lo

Max and Lindsay looked at each other and laughed, then Max explained. “The former sheriff, whom your lovely wife took over for, would not ask for a cup of coffee. He would demand that one of us bring it to him. After a while, several people got tired of it and started spitting in it every time he ordered it. On the flip side, your lovely wife, our new illustrious sheriff, has never asked one of us to bring her coffee unless there was a reason. That reason is usually being up to her eyeballs in work and not sleeping for three days. She is one of us and doesn’t ask us to do anything that she isn’t willing to do herself. We also know that if something happens, she has our backs and will defend us if needed. For that, we will always bring her coffee without her needing to ask and most likely never spit in it, unlike her predecessor.” “That explains a lot about all of you and the last sheriff,” Wren said as he took a drink of his coffee. “It does, but yours, I spit in a few times for add

They sat and watched the lights continue to move among the trees. Most of the movements were slow and cautious, but occasionally, one would suddenly dart in a direction and jerk to a stop. Two more times, a light went into the air and came back down, cutting a tree down when it did. Finally, after about thirty minutes, she saw several vehicles coming up behind them. The lead vehicle stopped directly behind them, and they watched someone get out and walk toward Max’s window. “I’m sorry, but we need you to leave the area, deputy,” the soldier said to Max after he had lowered his car window. “Yes, sir, we were only following Agent Gold’s instructions to stay and observe until you arrived,” Max answered. “We?” The soldier questioned as he looked into the passenger seat and saw Lindsay. “Sheriff Gold, ma’am, I wasn’t aware you were here. I apologize for my abruptness.” “No worries, we are quite happy to leave this to you,” Lindsay told him. Max pulled into a driveway across from wher

She had been behind Little Bob, so by the time she arrived at the department, he was already inside, pouring a cup of coffee. He was mumbling something to himself and shaking his head. She had seen him do this a few times before, but those had all been calls involving children who had not been adeq

Lindsay took the tablet and began to scan the files from the camera memory card to find the correct ones. She found it and started to watch. Everything seemed to be perfectly normal for being on patrol at 3 a.m. in the middle of nowhere. She had just reached the time stamp 03:12 in the clip when sh

Wren drove Dillon to school and then went shopping to stock up on the junk food he had promised Lindsay before she ever woke up. He found her favorite pizza, ice cream, chips, orange soda, and everything needed to make loaded nachos. Wren loved doing stuff like that for her and Dillon. He hoped tha

Not being in the office had been driving Lindsay crazy. The department had been updating her every shift, usually by at least one dispatcher on duty calling her or a deputy stopping by. Cat had been calling at 8 a.m., noon, and 4 p.m., almost on the dot, to ensure Lindsay knew everything that took
