LOGINAudrey’s POV
I couldn’t dare refuse this offer. My insides burned from rage, and deep down I knew I couldn’t bring down Michael and Alana on my own. I needed help, and here it was, on a silver platter at that. A smile curved on his lips, one that couldn’t be labeled as one; his lips simply pulled up before returning back to their usual state. He gripped my hand a bit tighter, his larger hand covering mine completely. “Will you marry me, Audrey?” His words were smooth, gently reminding me that I hadn’t yet replied to his question. “Y—yes.” His thumb gently brushed the back of my hand. I felt a sudden jolt immediately that had me pulling away. His lips pulled up into a smirk, one that made a cold brush against my spine. Why did it feel like my fate had been sealed without the need of a contract? Was it normal trusting this man whom I didn’t know, had never seen before, and was now marrying??? My lips parted to say something to oppose the marriage plans—maybe they could make another deal—however, my words died in my throat at his very next words. “Of course, you’ll be heavily compensated. Twenty million dollars per week.” I paused, my brain processing his words. Twenty million a week!!?? That would clear my mother’s bill in an instant, buy a house—we would live like royalty. Twenty million dollars and my best shot at crushing Michael and Alana? I’m in!! He cleared my hospital bills, and after the doctor said I was okay, I was discharged from the hospital. My eyes stretched at the expensive sleek black car which belonged to him, but then what was there to be surprised about? He was a wealthy man. And a mafia! The lingering thought tugged at the back of my head, but for the umpteenth time, I pushed it aside. He pulled the door open for me, and then I got in. He shut the door and then got into the driver’s seat. The car produced a soft hum once he ignited it. “Wait, where are we going now?” I turned to ask him. I clutched the sides of my gown, suddenly feeling a bit nervous. This man was incredibly handsome, too handsome that I wondered if he had been sculpted by all the gods of beauty. His gray eyes, his sharp jawline, and then that masculine build—not to mention he was also twice my height and size. His midnight black hair glistened, and then he suddenly turned to stare at me. My heart caught in my throat. “I’m dropping you home,” came his curt response, and then his eyes were fixed back on the road ahead. My brows furrowed. “You don’t… even know my house.” He chuckled, taking me off guard. It sounded so deep, alluring… Snap out of it, I cautioned myself. I just got my heart smashed to bits by the man I considered to be the love of my life. I can’t afford lowering my guard again. However, he didn’t reply to my question, and my face became marred with shock when he drove us to my house minutes later. He… he had done his research on me, and so fast too. How was that possible? “I’ll call you,” were his last words before driving off. I hadn’t given him my number, but somehow he had gotten it, like he had known I would have no choice but to take his offer. I gripped the hand of my purse tighter and then got into my apartment. Days passed, and I never heard anything from him. I was starting to believe I had only been imagining things; perhaps it was due to the high dosage of treatment I had received in the hospital. Twenty million a week— I wish, I scoffed. I finished up with my late-night shift and prepared to board the last cab home. However, the familiar sleek black car suddenly pulled up in front of me. I stepped back cautiously. It couldn’t be him. The last thing I wanted was falling prey to another mafia whom Michael might’ve hired to get rid of me, and just as I was about to make a run for it, the tinted glass slowly wound down. I halted instantly. It was him. I could never forget that perfectly sculpted face in a hurry. “Get in,” his tone was cold. I hesitated for a moment, but then remembered the humiliation Michael had put me through, his betrayal, and his ploy to have me killed. I got in instantly. The ride was a quiet one, and as if it was a normal routine, he drove me to my house. At this point, I didn’t know what to say. I fiddled with the ends of my shirt. He had probably changed his mind; that offer was too good to be true anyway. “Audrey,” he suddenly called, pulling me out of my thoughts. My stomach churned, like a thousand butterflies had exploded in it. Had my name always sounded this good? He pulled out some documents and handed them to me. My eyes instantly skimmed through the headline—it was a marriage contract. My hand trembled, nearly dropping the files. This was happening too fast. I didn’t even know his name yet. “This is your last chance to back out. If you’ve changed your mind, you can get down now, and I’ll never reach out to you again.” My heart pounded in my ribcage. He sounded ever so relaxed, like my involvement in this meant nothing—or perhaps he was sure as hell my mind was unchanged. I stared at the document once more, averting his gaze. This kind of opportunity might—would—never come again. There was no use contemplating. “Let me save us both time. Three major things…” My heart caught in my throat once his fingers flew to my chin, making sure he held direct eye contact with me. “Rule One, my personal life is none of your business,” his words flew like waves. “Two, You are not to fall in love with me.” He paused, gauging every flicker of emotion crossing my face. That wasn’t a problem. I had no plans of falling in love with him anyway. “Three…” he drawled, reminding me he had one last rule left. “You are to conceive my child five months from now, a divorce will be issued immediately after birthing my child.” I froze instantly.Drecos POVThe silence of my study was the only thing keeping my head from exploding. I leaned back into the heavy leather chair, letting my head drop against the backrest and closing my eyes. The day had been one problem or the other. From dealing with the lamberto situation to the suffocating panic when I thought Audrey had vanished. What is she doing to me? I wondered, my jaw tightening. Then I heard a soft tap on the door followed by the click of the door, followed by the familiar, sharp scent of Eleanor’s perfume. I didn't open my eyes, hoping she’d just take what she needed and leave. Instead, I felt her hands settle onto my shoulders. Her touch was slow, a seductive heat radiating from her palms as she began to massage the tight muscles of my neck. Then, her hands strayed. They slid down from my shoulders, her fingers beginning to caress the center of my chest, trailing over the fabric of my shirt with a lingering, intimate intent. My eyes snapped open, and my hand shot up like
Drecos POVThe marble floor felt like they were sinking beneath my shoes. I paced up and down the room. I held my hands waiting for it to ring waiting for Audrey to call me but she didn’t. I kept imagining a worse case scenario: a Marcelo hit squad, a car accident or maybe she had collapsed somewhere in the city where I couldn’t reach her.Where the hell are you Audrey? I wasn’t used to not having control over something let alone being worried over someone to know if she was breathing. I’d handle twenty million dollars betrayals with more composure than I was handling a missing woman.“Drecos you have to calm down,” Eleanor said, her voice smooth as her eyes followed my pacing around. “Maybe it is for the better. I’m here for you if she wanted to be found, she wouldn’t have ditched the driver.”I didn’t answer. I just kept pacing. Eleanor was more than a sister to me and I appreciate her being here to keep me grounded, but her words are starting to annoy me. She seemed almost too eag
Audrey’s POVI stared in disbelief at the test result in my hands trying to force a rewrite with my eyes. I stared at the bold black ink POSITIVE until my vision clouded over. I was six weeks gone.I moved silently through the hallway, my legs finally finding their way to my mother's room. I stood over her, watching at how peaceful she looked when my world was crumbling before my eyes.“I’m sorry mom,” I whispered, leaning in to kiss her forehead. “I have to go.”I grabbed my bag and shoved the test results inside and walked out of the room. I needed to get some air and take a long walk.I walked past the nurses' station, I think I heard her mumble some words I didn't quite get. I just waved to her and headed for the exit door.As soon as I stepped out the cool evening breeze hit my face but I didn't care for the comfort it brought. My mind was racing. What do I do now? This wasn't just a pregnancy. It was a ticking time bomb. I was trapped in a contract marriage with Drecos. Now I a
Drecos POVI watched in shock as Eleanor wrapped her hand around Audrey, for a second I thought the Italian sun had melted her brain. Eleanor didn't do affection and she most certainly didn't do besties. My gaze remained cold, I remained still as I didn't buy this whole rebranded Eleanor one bit. I looked at Audrey whose face looked like she had seen a ghost. I remain calm and dismissive.“Oh, I’m sorry,” Eleanor chirped now, releasing Audrey. “Did I interrupt something?”“We are on our way out,” I replied flatly.Eleanor immediately redirected her attention to Audrey. “I deeply regret the way I treated you, Audrey. I hope we can settle our differences and become one big family,” she said with a gentle voice. Audrey just nodded. She had that expression that she didn't quite believe this rebranded Eleanor.I stepped close to Audrey, having the strong urge to pull her away from Eleanor’s sudden saintliness.“Drecos,” Eleanor called her tone shifting instantly as she looked at me. “Do
Alana’s POVI kept quiet for a moment, giving her time actually to think about it before I continued. “We have a common enemy, I think we should team up and eliminate our common threat by all means necessary.”“You’re joking right? What makes you think I would betray the Vacinelo name for a mercelo?” she snappedI simply smiled. I expected her reply but I could smell her desperation. Pride, it's always pride that blinds them.“Let’s just say I know you want Drecos,” I said my words hanging in the air. “Now the only thing that is stopping you from getting your man is Audrey. If you don't act fast and remove her you might never have him. Who knows she just might kick you out of the house once she becomes the queen. I have the resources to make her disappear but I need someone on the inside.”The silence on the other end shifted. It wasn't just a silence of anger but she was calculating the odds. “Okay,” Eleanor finally whispered, her voice melting into something far more dangerous. “S
Audrey’s POVI quickly ran out of the room and ran towards the nurses’ station. The smell of the hospital no longer had the smell of drugs or antiseptic; it felt like I was walking in the graveyard.I hadn’t ran for long but it felt like I was running through quicksand as I ran to the nurses station. My heart wasn’t just beating, it was pounding against my chest screaming one name over and over Mom… Mom… Mom…Please, God, let Alana be a liar, I silently prayed in my heart. Let her be a liar. I’ll give up the revenge. I’ll give up the Vacinelo name. I’ll go back to the diner. Just let her be breathing.I reached the desk and slammed my hands down on the laminate surface. I didn't recognize my own voice when I spoke; it was high and broken.“Where is my mother?” I gasped, my fingers clawing at the arm of the nurse sitting there. "Room 309. Where is she?”The nurse jumped, her eyes wide with alarm. “Please, ma’am... you’re shouting. You have to calm down. You’re in the hospital.”Calm do
