Chapter 1

Karen was so pleased she could not stop smiling as she slapped her thigh. "That's right! That is exactly what I would expect from a VIP! You really do think differently now that you're a business owner! Alright, then. It's New Year's Day. We have a deal!"

Then, she cheerfully dragged Toby outside. "Come on, Toby. Let's go buy some fireworks. Don't bother your cousin while he cleans the house. You'll get a big present in a few days!"

The smile disappeared from my face. I turned around and took out my phone before opening a shopping app.

I checked each item Toby had destroyed, took photos and screenshots, and saved them. After rounding it down, the total came to twelve thousand dollars.

By the time I finished cleaning my room, it was already noon.

After I came back from holiday shopping, the dining table was already covered with food.

Karen was sitting at the head of the table, gripping a crispy pork knuckle and chewing hard to the point of having grease all over her mouth. Meanwhile, Toby was using a fork and spoon to pick out food he did not like, scattering it everywhere.

My parents sat at the far end of the table, smiling awkwardly as they served Karen and Toby.

When Karen saw me come home, she spat a piece of bone onto the table. "Oh, you're back, Spencer. Come eat."

I looked at her coldly and sat down in front of my plate. Then, I picked up my fork and spoon.

"By the way, Spencer, you're twenty-eight this year, right?" Karen asked.

There it was again.

I kept my face blank. "Yes. Why do you ask?"

Karen's eyes scanned me up and down. "Why else? You're almost thirty and still single. Look at the neighbor's son. He's three years younger than you, yet he already has two kids."

I picked up some salad from the salad bowl and calmly said, "I'm busy with work at the company right now, and I don't have time to think about that."

"What's the point of being busy?" Karen smiled in disdain. "For a man, it's pointless no matter how big his career gets if he doesn't have a wife to run his home and children to carry on his legacy. No matter how much money you make, you're just a well-paid wage slave.

"Besides, when your company goes public eventually, you're just going to let outsiders benefit from it, right?"

As she spoke, she glanced at Toby. "Look at our Toby. He's clearly the future of the entire extended Lane family. You make so much money, but won't it all end up going to Toby if you don't have a son?"

I almost choked on the corn in the salad. Her scheme was so obvious I could see it from the other side of the planet.

I said, "Karen, I earn my money through hard work. I can give it to whoever I want. By law, my direct heirs would be my parents. What does Toby have to do with it?"

I set down my fork as my voice turned cold.

Karen's face stiffened. Then, she quickly put on a sincere look as if she was simply worried. "Oh, why talk like I'm an outsider? I am saying this for your own good. How about this? I know a good match. Should I introduce you to her?"

I was about to refuse, but my mother nudged my leg under the table. Her eyes were full of pleading. She was afraid I would argue with Karen and ruin the holiday season.

I took a deep breath and held back.

"What kind of person?" I asked casually.

The whole room went wild as they watched.Camera flashes went off wildly, and the reporters' cameras instantly turned toward Karen, whose face had gone pale below the stage. The livestream comments exploded at once.[She pinched her own son to frame someone? Is this woman a demon?][That brat is awful! If it were me, I would have shown him who's boss!]Karen panicked. She stood up and shouted with her finger pointed at me. "This is fake! This is an invasion of privacy!"I ignored her and played the second video."If you don't give me two hundred thousand dollars, I'll go to the entrance of your company and make a scene every day!"Belle's greedy voice also rang throughout the room. "As long as you satisfy me..."This time, even the reporters at the scene murmured in disgust.Belle was so frightened that she covered her face and tried to crawl under the table.Holding the microphone, I coldly said, "Karen, Belle, do you still want the two hundred thousand dollars?"Before th

  • A Big Present   Chapter 8

Karen and Belle stayed in the hotel, and they brought Toby with them. They lived like royalty that night. They ordered the most expensive imported lobster and opened several bottles of red wine worth thousands each for dinner. The next morning, at nine o'clock, there was only one hour left until the press conference.I was backstage making the final preparations when the hotel lobby manager suddenly ran over, drenched in sweat. "Sir, this is bad. That relative of yours... That boy caused a huge disaster."I raised an eyebrow. "What happened?""That boy was running around the lobby and insisted on climbing onto the decorative centerpiece in the middle of the lobby. The security guards tried to stop him, but that woman scolded them and said you were an important client, and that we were just guard dogs and shouldn't interfere..."The manager wiped his sweat, and his voice trembled. "In the end... After the boy climbed up, he knocked the centerpiece over.""Knocked it over?""Yes.

Karen and Belle arrived at the hotel on time. The moment they entered the hotel, they could barely hide the smug looks on their faces. Karen plopped down on the leather couch and looked at me in contempt. "What? Are you feeling afraid now? Where was that attitude earlier?"Belle's shifty eyes roamed over me, and she smiled greedily. "Spencer, I told you. Couples fight and make up all the time. Why take it this far?"I forced down my disgust and poured each of them a cup of coffee. Then, I put on a helpless expression. "Karen, Belle, I know I made a mistake. The pressure online is too much, the company's stock price keeps falling, and the board is about to fire me. Please show me some mercy and let me go."When Karen heard that, her eyes lit up, and she then made an outrageous demand. "Fine, but we worked very hard this morning, too. Including Toby's emotional distress from being hit, nutrition expenses after being beaten, and the damage to Belle's reputation..."She held up two fi

Before long, the holiday season came to an end, and the ten days had flown by in the blink of an eye.I said goodbye to my reluctant parents and returned to the company. As for Karen, I had no idea where she had gone or what she had done. There had been no news from her at all. She did not answer a single call or message urging her to pay the money back.I was not in a hurry to deal with her, though. It was rare to get a proper rest during the New Year period, so I planned to look for her after things had settled down. That was what I thought, but she came to my company on her own. That morning, as soon as I arrived at the company, I saw that the entrance to the building was packed with people. Everyone was pointing and whispering. In the center of the crowd was a huge banner with black words on a white background.[Heartless public company CEO Spencer Lane. Rich, cruel, and abusive to an eight-year-old! He has a messy private life!]Karen sat on the ground with her hair a mess

The air seemed to freeze. The bill was printed clearly. The total was twelve thousand dollars, and it was not a small amount.Karen's face darkened, and her eyes settled on me fixedly. "Spencer, what... What's the meaning of this?!""What else could it mean?" I asked her back with a shrug. "Your son damaged my limited-edition figures and model kits, not to mention the wall had to be repainted. The total comes to twelve thousand dollars. Now, would you prefer to pay by online transfer or in cash?"Karen's face turned red before turning pale as she roared, "You brat! You want twelve thousand dollars from me just for a few broken plastic toys?!"Then, she tore the bills into pieces. "I won't accept this! I did not see any bills! These are all scrap paper!"I calmly watched her lose control and said gently, "Those were only copies. The originals are with my lawyer. Also, the home security systems recorded the entire process of you destroying the evidence just now."Karen froze. She

Over the next two days, the house was unusually quiet. Karen did not bring Toby over to cause any trouble again.I was not sitting idle either. I contacted a lawyer and asked about the rules for seeking compensation for damaged property.I had a collector friend issue detailed appraisal reports and price certificates for the damaged collectible figures and the model kits in my home.I also found a renovation company and had them estimate the cost of repairing the wall that had been scribbled on by Toby earlier.I then organized all the bills into one document. That was the "big present" I had prepared for Toby. Then, New Year's Day arrived.Just after dawn, the house had already become lively.According to our hometown custom, relatives and neighbors came by on the morning of the first day to exchange greetings.Karen had deliberately gotten up early and brought Toby with her. The two of them sat in the living room like guards at the gate.Every time a guest arrived, Karen wo
