LOGINIt's a busy street and everywhere is crowded and bustling with people...noisy too. Cassie and I stood underneath a tampolene, directly in front of a fast food restaurant, covered in sweat.
Drained would be an understatement to describe how we were, but we were determined to find anyone putting on a Mickey mouse shirt.
"Are you sure about the place?" I asked for the seventh—maybe more, time.
"Yesssss, Elina, Yes!" Cassie replied, not taking her eyes off the road.
I squeezed my face, feeling frustrated.
Apparently, our 'hacker' friend told us to come and wait for him under a tampolene in front of a fast food restaurant and check out for anyone wearing a Mickey mouse shirt.
A 'Mickey mouse' shirt.
At this point, it seemed like a joke and I'm frustrated and sweaty and tired of standing under the scorching sun.
"If I lay my hands on that tech friend of yours, I'm so going to—" I am interrupted by a voice.
"To do what?" Cassie and I both spinned around to find a skinny guy standing behind us. A bottle of soda on his right hand and a doughnut on his left.
He was wearing a red cap on his head and on his shirt is printed the famous Mickey mouse cartoon.
"Please don't tell me—" he takes a long sip from his drink with his straw, interrupting me.
"—that I'm the hacker that asked you to come and wait for me in front of a fast food restaurant? Okay, I won't." He says in a dull voice as he takes a small bite from his doughnut.
"Jerry," Cassy says in a cherry mood. "Nice to see you after a long time."
"Yes, you too. I assume you've broken up with the well muscled dude you broke my heart for." His voice still sounds dull as he takes another sip from his drink.
"Jerry.... I said I was sorry about that." Cassie replies, leaving me to watch the weird scenario going on in front of me.
"I know." Jerry takes his eyes off Cassie and it falls on me. "So you need help finding someone. Well, come on in." He turns around, leading us inside the restaurant and I open my mouth in shock as I see other workers wearing the same Mickey mouse shirt.
"You fucking work here?" I asked, taking a step closer only to be held back by Cassie.
"It's okay, baby bear, it's okay. Jerry can be a prick at times." She whispers in my ear as I watch Jerry walk, choosing to ignore the threat behind him.
We picked a seat at the far end of the restaurant as Jerry drops his half eaten doughnut and pulls out a laptop from a bag.
He clicked on the laptop the moment he turns it on and pulled out his phone to check the number from Cassie's text.
My stomach is tight with nerves. Every minute feels like another chance for that secret to explode.
Suddenly, my phone rang. I fumbled to pick it. “Hello?”
“Miss Hemsworth?” Amelia's voice says. “You need to get down to the project site, now. There’s been... a situation.”
"Shit!" I almost forgot. Today's the day for residential design. Cassie and I placed Amelia in charge till we got back. But it seems she's not capable enough. "I'll be there as soon as I can."
I gave Cassie a restrained smile and she understood, giving me a nod as I bolted out of the restaurant.
It didn't take me long to get to the site but I was panting like a dog on the run.
I found Amelia standing at the entrance with a tab in her hands and a nervous smile on her face.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Well.... One of the workers had an argument with the CEO's liaison. She was trying to tell him something but he thought she was trying to teach him his work. She slapped him when he called her a bad word and it took a few other workers to restrain him from doing the same to her." She says.
"Jesus Christ, Amelia. I left you in fucking charge." I rubbed my face, knowing the complications of what has happened.
I could very much lose the project.
"One other thing." Amelia pipes in, her voice barely audible. "The CEO wants to see you." She said and my heart almost stopped beating.
Of course, he's around. I'm so lost on this project.
I rubbed my head and took deep breath as I try to calm myself.
"Thank you, Amelia, you can leave. You've done a really great job today." I smiled sarcastically at her as I turned to where she directed me to where Noah is.
Apparently, he's waiting for me in a black SUV. The door opened as I got closer.
"Get in." I heard him say from inside.
Taking a deep breath and after a gulp, I got in.
"Randolf, can you excuse me for a few minutes?" He asked his driver.
"Of course, sir." I watched as Randolf unbuckled his seatbelt and alighted from the car, shutting it behind him, leaving me with Noah.
He kept his face firmly on his tab but I could see him tense and his face still hardened.
"There was a situation over here and you weren't around." He said.
"Yes. I—" I began but he interrupted me.
"You don't think this project is important enough to give your all to it?" His gaze was finally off the screen and on me.
"It is, it really is. And I'm sorry. Something came up and I had to go there. It wouldn't happen again. I'm sorry." I can't afford to lose this project. It's the only way I can cement my brand and put it at the top of all competition.
Noah takes a few minutes to observe me and it's not until his gaze falls to my lips that he looks away. "Alright, one more chance. Don't let there be a recurrence of what happened today again, Ms. Hemsworth."
I winced as he spoke to me professionally. "Alright......boss" I watched him have the same effect as me and I feel a pang of satisfaction.
I was about to step out of the car when he held my arm.
I turned to face him but I saw him looking at me intently. He became closer than he was before and I could feel his breath on my face.
"Noah," I began but I faltered as I closed my eyes.
I opened my eyes and my lips drifted to his. I was about to move in when my phone rang.
Cassie.
I pulled back and picked the call.
“We got something. An address.”
Elina's POV “Elina.” Judith called, her eyes twinkled with mischief. She had a little smile on her face but I pretended not to care or see what she just did.“I thought we weren't gonna eat until later.” I started crossing my legs as Noah cleared his throat. “Judith informed me that they have hot lasagna so__”“I understand.” I said immediately and smiled.“How can you refuse or resist your favorite? That's not possible.” I continued, then turned to look at Amelia.“We should order breakfast now, shouldn't we?” I asked and she smiled.“Of course,we should. I've gotten the documents ready, I've read through them it's left for you to sign on the appropriate places.”“Thank you.” I muttered lowly as she waved towards a waitress.“What can I get you?” She asked.“Red wine. The best.” I replied bluntly, then turned to look at Judith. “We should make a toast to this deal, it's really great.”“Of course.” Noah said, smiling at me.“After breakfast, Amelia will be going to the beach house to p
Elina's POV My phone rang the minute I wanted into my room and I needed no one to tell me who it was. “You couldn't spend a day without hearing from me,huh?” I asked, getting comfortable under the duvet as Cassie's laughter rumbled from the other end of the phone.“So how's Maldives? Tell me, are you in the sheets with Mr handsome already?” She asked and I felt my face growing warm.“He's in the next room so don't expect me to answer any questions concerning that.”“Oh,why aren't you in his room? Did something happen? Because after last night's moans and screams__”“Cassie!” I yelled into the phone and I could envision her face going serious.“I was kidding.” She wasn't and I knew about it.“I need to rest, I've got a long day ahead of me tomorrow so it's a goodnight for now.” I whispered into the phone.“Alright, goodnight.” I turned my phone off but the message I received earlier when I was having dinner with Noah crossed my mind.Whoever this anonymous person is,the person knows m
Noah's POV “Mia dropped by the office this morning.” Judith said, walking towards me with a pile of clothes in her hands. “You've been ignoring her calls,” I gave her a brief stare and she chuckled.“That's what she said.” She replied, placing the clothes on the bed and looking at me with hands akimbo. “ I don't ignore calls, except I'm not in the mood.” I replied but frankly I could only think of Elina and our wonderful night together.“Tell me something Judith, do you think I'm __” my phone's loud ringing stopped me mid sentence.“Hello Blanco.” I said loudly into the phone and sank into the seat next to me.“I'm good, wanted to check up on you before your long awaited trip.” “No, I'll tell you what you called to do.” Judith burst in through the door again, this time carrying several travel bags.“You called to tease me about going on a trip alone with Elina.” I heard his laughter rumble over the phone and I smiled.“We'll talk when I get back.” I ended the call and saw Judith giv
Elina's POV “Care to explain what I just saw?” Cassie asked as I stepped back into my room. I rolled my eyes but the warmth spreading through my cheeks made me chuckle.“Quit doing that.” I said calmly and she came to sit in front of me on the sofa. “Come on, are you gonna spill or do I have to force it out of your mouth?”“I wish.” I replied standing on my feet as I walked over to the nightstand to pick my phone.“I'm gonna have a conversation with Amelia and by the time I get back I really hope you won't be here.”“Well you should know I'm not leaving without getting the full details of what happened here last night.” She replied cockily.“We had sex.” I replied casually and she jumped up, punching the air in the process.“Did you win a lottery or something? You're happier than I am that I had sex with my ex husband who hasn't forgiven me for leaving.” She scoffed and walked to the door.“You both can keep deceiving yourselves about not forgiving each other but I'll be right here w
Noah's POV We stayed together on the bed, my palm constantly brushing her hair, wiping her cheeks gently as the cool breeze blew into the room through the window.Words weren't needed. I'm just glad I can stay with her without us bickering and fighting over something.“We'll leave tomorrow evening, I'm sure you're ready?” I asked and she moved away from my arm to look into my eyes directly.“Noah?” She called.“Hmm.” I replied and she chuckled.“There's something called an assistant and I have one. She'll make sure I'm ready for the trip tomorrow so you don't have to worry.” I chuckled, shaking my head as I realized I'd just sat, listening to her like a child listening to his mom lecture him about a bad habit.“I think you should rest, we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow. I'll lea__”“Leave?” She asked, holding my hand gently as I looked into her dreamy eyes. One look at her and I knew she didn't want me to leave and that's all the clue I needed. My mouth came down on hers, hard,
ELINA POV The sentence sat on the card like a verdict. I stared and read it again because the brain sometimes needed repetition to accept reality. A scream had been building somewhere behind my ribs; when it exited, it was raw and animal. Cassie’s eyes widened and she grabbed the card from my numb fingers.“This is a threat,” she breathed as if naming it might shrink it.“It—” I tried to say something coherent, but my mouth tasted like cotton. My lungs felt constricted, like the air had narrowed.Cassie’s face sharpened, that nurse’s training snapping into place. “Okay. Lock the doors. Call Amelia. Call Jerry. Call the police. Don’t touch anything. Don’t… breathe too hard.” She was moving faster than an ordinary morning allowed. Her hands were on my shoulders, steady and strong.I tried to breathe. The sound came out small and jagged. The words on the card were precise, intimate in their cruelty. They knew about Noah. About the life I’d lost. They had found the most fragile tendon an
