Masuk“Holy shit!”
Cassie’s voice rang out as the paper cup of vanilla milkshake slipped from her hand, splattering across the tiled floor.
I winced, preparing myself for what is to come next.
Not for the mess.
“You had a baby?” She questions, her eyes wide and disbelieving. “And you never told me?” She steps back as if the confession physically hit her. “I thought we were—” Her voice cracks as tears begin to fall from her eyes. “I thought we were best friends, Elina.”
It’s not until the first tear slips down her freckled cheek that I realized how deeply I’ve hurt her.
Cassie doesn’t cry.
She'd rather give you a sarcastic comment and insult you—maybe beat you up for it but she never cries.
Not when her first love broke up with her for her seat-partner or when she lost the volleyball game.
But she’s crying now because of me.
Without thinking, I crossed the room and wrapped my arms around her but she shrugged me off, not willing to get close to me. She wipped furiously at the tears that won’t stop falling, her mascara smudging beneath her eyes.
“I knew something was wrong,” she says. “I knew you were battling something, but I thought it was just... stress or something. Maybe a phase that'll pass soon. But this?” She laughed bitterly. “This isn't a small issue , Elina. You lost a child and went through that pain alone—and I wasn’t there for you.”
I tried to explain, to speak, but the words felt stuck in my throat.
“Cassie, I—”
“No,” she cuts in, shaking her head. “Don’t tell me you didn’t want to bother me. Don’t give me that crap. I signed up for the full ride the day we became sisters by choice, not blood. I was there for your first heartbreak, your second apartment flood, your tequila birthday meltdown—this should’ve been no different.”
She folds her arms as she turns away from me, not willing to see my face.
I stepped in front of her, swallowing the lump in my throat. “You’re not just my best friend, Cassie. You are my sister. The sister I never had but always needed. I didn’t hide this from you because I didn’t trust you—I hid it because I was broken. Because I couldn’t even say it out loud without falling apart.”
She didn’t look at me, but her arms slowly drop.
“I couldn’t tell anyone,” I whispered. “Not even Noah. It was a burden I chose to carry alone. It felt... shameful. Like if I spoke it into existence, it would destroy me all over again.”
Cassie blinked slowly, absorbing every word, her expression softening. I can see it—the moment she realized this wasn’t about excluding her. It was about living
She reached out and gently lifts my chin until our eyes met. “You’re not alone, Elina. You never were. Not while I’m still breathing.”
I broke. I wrapped my arms around her again, tighter this time, and this time she didn’t resist. She holds me like she means it, like she’s anchoring me back to shore.
I didn’t know how long we stayed like that but when we finally pulled apart, the air felt lighter.
Cassie wiped her face and cleared her throat. “So... what did Noah say when you told him?”
I stiffened.
She squinted at me. “Elina. You did tell him... right?”
I shook my head, barely able to meet her eyes. “No. I didn’t.”
Her gasp was sharp. “Elina Hemsworth! That was his child too. What possible excuse could you have for keeping that from him?”
I exhaled shakily, pressing my hands against the counter to steady myself. “That’s exactly why I didn’t tell him.”
She stared, baffled.
“Noah adores kids,” I explained, voice low. “We used to talk about having them someday—two, maybe three. He would’ve made the most loving father. But losing that baby would’ve destroyed him. It nearly destroyed me, Cassie. And if I had told him... it would’ve ruined him. His work, his spirit, everything.”
Realization dawned on her face. “That’s why you left?"
I nodded. “I couldn’t stay. I couldn’t be the one who ripped his heart out.”
Cassie exhaled and ran a hand through her wild curls. “And now someone knows... and they’re threatening to tell him?”
I nodded again, my fingers curling around the edge of the counter. “I’ve gotten two texts already. And the second one... it came with a name.”
“Let me see it,” she says, instantly shifting into problem-solving mode.
I handed her my phone. She studied the messages for a long, tense moment, then tilts her head.
“Well... lucky for you, they left us a trail.”
I frowned. “What do you mean?”
Cassie shrugs, already pulling out her own phone. “The number isn’t encrypted, and the name they used gives us something to dig into. I have a contact—an old friend from college. If anyone can trace the number and find out who’s behind it, he can.”
“You’ve got a hacker friend?” I blinked, surprised.
She smirked, “You’re not the only one with secrets, babe.”
I laughed softly, despite myself. “Yeah... I guess I deserved that too.”
I step closer to her outstretched arm, my voice sincere. “I’m sorry, Cassie. I never meant to shut you out. I was just trying to survive.”
She nodded slowly, then opens her arms. “Just promise me... no more secrets. From now on, we will handle things together.”
I took a breath.
“I promise,” I whispered, pulling her into another hug.
For the first time after my meeting with Noah, I felt relieved and healed. My resurgence to life and purpose was birthed in that hug with my mental physician at the moment, Cassie.
And this time, I won't let go.
Elina's POV “Elina.” Judith called, her eyes twinkled with mischief. She had a little smile on her face but I pretended not to care or see what she just did.“I thought we weren't gonna eat until later.” I started crossing my legs as Noah cleared his throat. “Judith informed me that they have hot lasagna so__”“I understand.” I said immediately and smiled.“How can you refuse or resist your favorite? That's not possible.” I continued, then turned to look at Amelia.“We should order breakfast now, shouldn't we?” I asked and she smiled.“Of course,we should. I've gotten the documents ready, I've read through them it's left for you to sign on the appropriate places.”“Thank you.” I muttered lowly as she waved towards a waitress.“What can I get you?” She asked.“Red wine. The best.” I replied bluntly, then turned to look at Judith. “We should make a toast to this deal, it's really great.”“Of course.” Noah said, smiling at me.“After breakfast, Amelia will be going to the beach house to p
Elina's POV My phone rang the minute I wanted into my room and I needed no one to tell me who it was. “You couldn't spend a day without hearing from me,huh?” I asked, getting comfortable under the duvet as Cassie's laughter rumbled from the other end of the phone.“So how's Maldives? Tell me, are you in the sheets with Mr handsome already?” She asked and I felt my face growing warm.“He's in the next room so don't expect me to answer any questions concerning that.”“Oh,why aren't you in his room? Did something happen? Because after last night's moans and screams__”“Cassie!” I yelled into the phone and I could envision her face going serious.“I was kidding.” She wasn't and I knew about it.“I need to rest, I've got a long day ahead of me tomorrow so it's a goodnight for now.” I whispered into the phone.“Alright, goodnight.” I turned my phone off but the message I received earlier when I was having dinner with Noah crossed my mind.Whoever this anonymous person is,the person knows m
Noah's POV “Mia dropped by the office this morning.” Judith said, walking towards me with a pile of clothes in her hands. “You've been ignoring her calls,” I gave her a brief stare and she chuckled.“That's what she said.” She replied, placing the clothes on the bed and looking at me with hands akimbo. “ I don't ignore calls, except I'm not in the mood.” I replied but frankly I could only think of Elina and our wonderful night together.“Tell me something Judith, do you think I'm __” my phone's loud ringing stopped me mid sentence.“Hello Blanco.” I said loudly into the phone and sank into the seat next to me.“I'm good, wanted to check up on you before your long awaited trip.” “No, I'll tell you what you called to do.” Judith burst in through the door again, this time carrying several travel bags.“You called to tease me about going on a trip alone with Elina.” I heard his laughter rumble over the phone and I smiled.“We'll talk when I get back.” I ended the call and saw Judith giv
Elina's POV “Care to explain what I just saw?” Cassie asked as I stepped back into my room. I rolled my eyes but the warmth spreading through my cheeks made me chuckle.“Quit doing that.” I said calmly and she came to sit in front of me on the sofa. “Come on, are you gonna spill or do I have to force it out of your mouth?”“I wish.” I replied standing on my feet as I walked over to the nightstand to pick my phone.“I'm gonna have a conversation with Amelia and by the time I get back I really hope you won't be here.”“Well you should know I'm not leaving without getting the full details of what happened here last night.” She replied cockily.“We had sex.” I replied casually and she jumped up, punching the air in the process.“Did you win a lottery or something? You're happier than I am that I had sex with my ex husband who hasn't forgiven me for leaving.” She scoffed and walked to the door.“You both can keep deceiving yourselves about not forgiving each other but I'll be right here w
Noah's POV We stayed together on the bed, my palm constantly brushing her hair, wiping her cheeks gently as the cool breeze blew into the room through the window.Words weren't needed. I'm just glad I can stay with her without us bickering and fighting over something.“We'll leave tomorrow evening, I'm sure you're ready?” I asked and she moved away from my arm to look into my eyes directly.“Noah?” She called.“Hmm.” I replied and she chuckled.“There's something called an assistant and I have one. She'll make sure I'm ready for the trip tomorrow so you don't have to worry.” I chuckled, shaking my head as I realized I'd just sat, listening to her like a child listening to his mom lecture him about a bad habit.“I think you should rest, we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow. I'll lea__”“Leave?” She asked, holding my hand gently as I looked into her dreamy eyes. One look at her and I knew she didn't want me to leave and that's all the clue I needed. My mouth came down on hers, hard,
ELINA POV The sentence sat on the card like a verdict. I stared and read it again because the brain sometimes needed repetition to accept reality. A scream had been building somewhere behind my ribs; when it exited, it was raw and animal. Cassie’s eyes widened and she grabbed the card from my numb fingers.“This is a threat,” she breathed as if naming it might shrink it.“It—” I tried to say something coherent, but my mouth tasted like cotton. My lungs felt constricted, like the air had narrowed.Cassie’s face sharpened, that nurse’s training snapping into place. “Okay. Lock the doors. Call Amelia. Call Jerry. Call the police. Don’t touch anything. Don’t… breathe too hard.” She was moving faster than an ordinary morning allowed. Her hands were on my shoulders, steady and strong.I tried to breathe. The sound came out small and jagged. The words on the card were precise, intimate in their cruelty. They knew about Noah. About the life I’d lost. They had found the most fragile tendon an
