Aurora.

Hospitals had always unsettled me. The harsh glow of fluorescent lights, the overpowering odor of antiseptic that clung to every surface, the muffled cries seeping through thin curtains, it was all too cold, too clinical. And now, confined to a bed with gauze wrapped around my skull and a deep, bone-deep soreness radiating from the fall, I felt more breakable than I ever had before.

That fall kept looping in my head like a cruel reel. I had been descending the palace stairs, and then nothing but air beneath me, a sickening jolt of pain, and then darkness. Then blood. I’d screamed when I saw it, a guttural, panicked wail torn from some ancient place inside me. The only thought in my mind was that something was wrong with the baby. Our baby.

I wept until my voice gave out, until my limbs trembled and my body curled in on itself. The nurses murmured reassurances, but they couldn’t touch the fear clawing at me. Not until the door creaked and he walked in.

“Aurora.”

His voice was b

Lucy.Sunlight filtered in through the windows, casting soft golden lines across the silk-draped canopy above. The warmth skimmed across my bare skin, gentle and quiet, as if the world dared not wake me too suddenly. I should have felt safe, nestled within these sheets, tangled beside a man I once believed I’d never lie beside again: King Ellison. His breath moved in slow, steady waves, his arm slung across my waist like an anchor holding me to this moment of stillness. But safety never stayed long in my world.“I need you to promise me something,” he murmured against my shoulder. His voice, rough from sleep, carried a sharpness that broke through the calm.My fingers gripped the edge of the sheet. “What now?”“Don’t go back to Town Hill,” he said, sitting up slightly. His eyes, dark, piercing, met mine with a weight that made my chest tighten.I pushed up on my elbows, exhaling hard. “Ellison..”“No.” His tone sharpened. He reached for his robe. “You don’t see what’s happening. Someo

Lucy."Ellison!" I called out.He was walking away from the harbor, his steps slow, shoulders slumped, his whole frame sagging under the weight of exhaustion. He looked completely spent, devastated in a way that made my chest tighten. Still, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelming pride for what he’d done.I'd reached the school just after the blasts rocked the area, just in time to see flames devouring the classrooms. Despite the danger, he’d rushed inside to rescue the twins without even thinking. Later, I saw him again, hauling a teacher's limp body out from the collapsing structure. I’d wanted to run to him then, but I was swept into the chaos, patching wounds, offering CPR, stabilizing victims one after another until my head spun and my hands wouldn’t stop shaking. Now, with the shredded edges of my scorched gown clenched in my fists and my bare feet aching from the jagged gravel, I’d snapped a heel and tossed my shoes aside earlier, I stumbled after him. My necklace still hung aro

Lucy. The afternoon sun cast a warm, gilded light over the training yard, bathing the steel blades and gleaming armor below in a radiant glow. From my window, I observed the guards maneuvering in the same motions, their drills precise and fluid. Each clash of their weapons sent a metallic echo that filtered faintly into my room, a distant reminder of the realm I was meant to rule. But today, my spirit wasn’t in it.I rested my elbows on the windowsill, arms folded tightly, my gaze unfocused. My mind drifted again, just as it had all week, back to the twins. Had Emilia finished her bottle without fussing? Did Elias manage to fall asleep after breakfast? It had barely been a few hours since I’d accompanied Elizabeth to drop them off at daycare, and already I yearned for their little arms wrapping around me, their laughter that could brighten even the darkest corners of my soul. The abrupt vibration on the table jolted me out of my thoughts. My phone rattled across the surface, buzzing i

Alpha Ellison. The atmosphere in the conference room was suffocating, the kind of silence that wasn’t just quiet, it pressed down on your chest. The gravity of what was unfolding had everyone tense. I pinched the bridge of my nose, inhaling deeply as I leaned back, trying to ease the storm in my thoughts. Aurora’s trial had pushed all of us to the edge, but none more than me.I had requested a pause, just a short one. I needed time to think, to breathe, to calm the storm threatening to break loose inside me. Still, my wolf stirred restlessly beneath the surface, agitated and coiled like a spring. When I reentered the room, my decision was set in stone. I braced myself, knowing the reaction it would ignite.“As Alpha,” I announced, cutting through the hushed murmurs of the ministers, “I cannot, and will not, agree to Aurora’s expulsion from this pack.”A collective gasp swept through the room. Several ministers exchanged wary glances, others stiffened in their seats. The tension snappe

Lucy. That morning, like so many others, I opened my eyes to the soft golden light pouring in through my bedroom window but I didn’t feel ready to face the day. I lay still, staring up at the ceiling, the early sun casting faint patterns on the walls. Outside, everything was eerily quiet, the silence wrapping around the house like a thick blanket. Inside my head, however, my thoughts were anything but still. They spiraled wildly, bouncing from one worry to another. And always, like a shadow I couldn’t shake, one thought returned again and again: the slave trade.Every night, it haunted me as I drifted into sleep, and every morning, it greeted me with a fresh weight on my chest. How could I possibly stop something so large, so vile, and so deeply entrenched?I rolled onto my side, pulling the heavy covers tightly around my shoulders. The warmth should have brought me some peace, but today, like so many other days, it didn’t. There was no comfort to be found. Not with what I knew. Not w

Aurora. The morning light filtered gently through the soft linen drapes, casting golden streaks across the tangled sheets beneath us. Kaidan’s arm lay draped over my waist, solid and warm, his breath slow and rhythmic against my shoulder. For once, the outside world felt distant and irrelevant. All that mattered was this, his skin against mine, the quiet hush of dawn, the steady beat of our hearts. And then the door burst open.“Aurora!”I bolted upright, the echo of my name slicing through the calm. My vision blurred from sleep, but I recognized that voice instantly, sharp, cutting, and full of venom. Ivy.Before I could even react, she strode into the room with the force of a storm, her heels clicking furiously against the floor. In a single motion, she yanked the blanket off the bed, baring both of us to the cool morning air. I gasped as the chill hit my skin.“You have ten minutes,” she hissed, eyes flashing. “The council is convened. Your trial is about to begin.”“Ivy, are you i
