Lucy.

The wind rustled through the trees as I stood on the training ground behind Josh, my hands clasped nervously in front of me. Josh stood in front me, arms crossed loosely, trying to act casual but failing to hide the tension coiling in his posture.

My stomach knotted. A sleek black SUV pulled up, its tinted windows reflecting the world like mirrors. It rolled to a stop a few feet from us, and the door opened with that soft, ominous click.

Alpha Ellison stepped out like he owned the damn earth beneath our feet.

His eyes locked on Josh, a storm brewing in that cold, calculated stare. The air grew heavier with each step he took toward us, his tall frame rigid with tightly contained fury. My breath caught. I didn’t need supernatural senses to know what he was thinking.

“Of course,” he sneered, his voice like ice. “So this is the reason you ran away. To meet your boyfriend.”

“What? No!” I stepped forward quickly, heart thudding in my chest. “Josh is just a friend.”

The Alpha’s gaze slid from Josh to me, slow and sharp. “You expect me to believe that?”

“Don't tell me this is who you live with,” Josh muttered, standing his ground.

Ellison ignored him completely. “Tell me the truth, Lucy. Why did you run out of the palace and breach our contract? You were supposed to bear me an heir, not—” His eyes flashed with something darker, uglier. “Not sneak off to play house with a lover.”

My stomach turned. “I didn’t run to scam you,” I said firmly, though my voice trembled. “I left because after the photos leaked, I assumed the deal was already over.”

“The deal isn’t over until I say it’s over.” His voice dropped to a growl. “Who the hell do you think you are to take such a decision?”

“I am nobody and I get it!” I shouted, unable to contain the mix of hurt and anger that exploded inside me. “I thought it was done. The pictures were everywhere, Alpha Ellison. What was I supposed to do? Wait around for you to humiliate me further?”

He took a step forward, closing the distance between us. “You took my money, Lucy. For your mother’s treatment. Did you think I wouldn’t come to collect?”

“That’s not fair—”

“Fair?” He barked a humorless laugh. “I gave you the means to save her life. You repaid me by running.”

I shook my head, a lump rising in my throat. “I didn’t run because I wanted to scam you. I was scared. Everything got so out of control, and I thought it was over. I was going to find a way to pay you back.”

His face twisted into something unreadable. “You’re going to refund every cent. Immediately.”

I blinked. “I don’t have that kind of money right now, but I will—I’ll figure something out.”

He stepped closer still, until I had to tilt my chin up to meet his eyes. “Then I’ll take collateral. Your mother stays under my supervision until the debt is repaid.”

My mouth dropped open. “You’re threatening to take my mother hostage?”

His jaw clenched. “Call it… insurance.”

“No,” I said, voice low and steady despite the tremor beneath. “No, you can’t. She’s sick. She needs care!”

“Then come back to the palace,” he said, each word like a hammer blow. “Reinstate the contract. You still have time.”

“And if I don’t?” I whispered.

His eyes burned into mine. “Then your mother suffers the consequences.”

The air between us felt like it might crack and shatter. I looked at Josh, who’d been standing silently, watching with thinly veiled rage.

“You don’t have to go with him,” Josh said, stepping toward me. “You always have a choice.”

I looked into his kind, steady eyes, the only source of calm in this hurricane. I wanted to believe him. I wanted to run away and leave this whole ugly mess behind. But I knew I couldn’t. Not with my mother’s life hanging in the balance.

I turned back to the Alpha. “Fine,” I said quietly. “I’ll go back with you.”

Ellison raised a brow. “Good. One year, Lucy. You fulfill your end of the contract by then, or the deal becomes permanent.”

My heart dropped. “One year?”

“Starting now.” His tone was final.

I looked back at Josh, and something in my chest twisted painfully. “I’m sorry,” I whispered.

He shook his head. “Don’t be. Just… take care of yourself. Promise me that.”

I nodded, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. We embraced briefly, his arms wrapping around me like a shield I didn’t deserve. I held on tight, memorizing the feel of safety, because I had a feeling it would be a long time before I felt it again.

“I’ll come visit,” I murmured. “When I can.”

“Just don’t forget who you are,” he said into my hair.

Then it was over. I stepped away and walked toward the car, the Alpha already behind the wheel.

The door slammed shut behind me like a final verdict.

We didn’t speak at first. The tension in the car was thick, and the silence felt heavier than any shouting match. I stared out the window, trying not to think too hard about what I’d just agreed to.

After a while, Ellison spoke, voice surprisingly calm. “You surprised me back there.”

I didn’t look at him. “How so?”

“You had a choice. You made the one I didn’t expect.”

“I didn’t have a choice. You made sure of that.”

A beat of silence.

“Maybe,” he said finally.

The road wound through the woods, trees zipping past in a blur. I could feel the exhaustion settling in now that the adrenaline was wearing off. My hands lay limply in my lap, the fight drained from me.

Then the world tilted.

A blinding flash of headlights came from the opposite direction, and I heard the sickening screech of tires against asphalt. Ellison jerked the wheel instinctively, and everything went wrong at once. The car veered off the road, hit a ditch, and then—

We were airborne.

Time seemed to slow.

I remember the way the seatbelt cut into my shoulder, the high-pitched whine of twisting metal, the sound of my own scream being torn from my throat. The car spun once, then twice, then slammed into the ground with a jarring thud that rattled my teeth.

Glass shattered. Metal screamed.

And then silence.

Pain bloomed through my body like fire, and darkness flirted at the edge of my vision. I tried to move, but couldn’t. The air felt thick, filled with smoke and the scent of burned rubber.

I turned my head—or maybe I thought I did—and saw Ellison slumped over the wheel, blood trickling from a cut on his forehead.

The last thing I heard before blackness claimed me was the distant sound of someone walking away.

And then, nothing.

LUCY.I wasn’t cursed, but right now I have every reason to believe that I was.My eyes burned as tears threatened to fall. I took deep breaths trying to calm myself, but it was futile as the tears dropped from my eyes when Beta Ethan, tore my papers into pieces. I thought he was only joking when he said he would fail me so he wouldn't have to see my ugly face in the palace. I lifted my head to meet his gaze. “Beta,” I didn't find any word leaving my lips after that. My mouth dried up immediately, and my chest burned with so much pain. I bent low to pick up what’s left of the application letter, but he dragged me up forcefully and pushed me backwards. “This is insane! Why would you fail me and tear my application letter just because you found out I was your mate? Do I disgust you that much?”The corner of his lips curled up unpleasantly. His eyes narrowed as he had a close look at me from my head to my toe. “You disgust me even more! You know, I have always thought that I wasn’t the

LUCY.“Alpha Ellison is the worst nightmare that anyone could ever come across. It was rumoured once that he was the devil that had come to dwell among mere mortals like us….” The lady dressing me up began. She had been ordered to take me away after I signed the contract of been the Alpha’s breeder and she was addressing me as it was my first time in this world. “The worse is his hatred for woman. He sees women as a tool to satisfy his sexual cravings and trust me, you are not an exception.”She put on my necklace. Why should I bother myself with such information? Truth is, I do not care about the king. I am only here for the sake of the money that would be paid to me and nothing else. I don't care how many women graze his bed, provided I get my salary as agreed, he can fuck a dead body for all I care.“You are going into his room now to serve him coffee, so make sure to be cautious of your steps and move.” she cautioned, and I gave a single nod. LUCY.The sound of the shattered cup drew out lots of people. They all stood, staring at me. I was dumb, short of words. How do I explain what just happened? Will they believe that I was pushed and didn't do it intentionally? My eyes landed on the lady who had pushed me without even saying sorry. She was staring back at me, but I would call it a glare because I could see envy written boldly on her face. What was wrong with her? Did she intentionally do this because I was brought in as the Alpha’s breeder?“Who is the riff-raff that did this?” The voice of an elderly woman drew my attention. But from the look of things she was older than the king himself. Was she Alpha's stepmother? No, that can not be, I was so sure I heard the news of the Alpha King losing but of his parents. I looked behind the woman and then I saw a young lady who would be the same age as me.I swallowed every saliva in my mouth as she walked closer ad picked up a piece of the cup. Lucy.My palms became so sweaty as I stared back at the Alpha King, who stood before me, running his fingers through my hair. The way he was looking at me made me become very still. His touch made my limbs tremble. Was he angry at me? I'm not sure if he does smile, but he had given me a sarcastic smirk at first.I raised my eyes to look elsewhere, but suddenly, our eyes met. I wanted to say something, maybe to ask why he was in my room, but I was short of words. My lips agape, but not a single word could come out of it.“Why is my breeder suddenly close to the Luna? Isn't that interesting?” he began, breaking the silence in the room. “You felt you are now the boss because you passed my test, huh? That's why you didn't just break my diamond cup, but you were already friends with Luna Dowager?” he sniffed, making me rub my palm together, and then he let go of my hair and stepped back a bit.My eyes fell on the lady who had dressed me up. Lucy.I spent the entire morning pacing in my room, my fingers tangled in my hair as my thoughts raced like a storm through my head. Why did Beta Ethan want to see me? After everything that bastard said to me at the interview! after how he tossed me aside like yesterday’s trash in front of the entire pack, I couldn’t wrap my head around it. He’d made his decision. He rejected me. So what does he want to see me for? Probably to reject me again.I sighed, glancing once more at the note I’d found slipped under my door last night after I sent the man away. No signature, no explanation—just his name written in tight, sharp handwriting: Ethan wants to see you. Come to his office. I had crumpled it immediately, then smoothed it out again a minute later. And now here I was. Against my better judgment. Dressed and out of my room, walking through the unfamiliar halls of the palace.Regret hit me the moment I stepped into the corridor. The palace was a labyrinth—grand, cold, and intimidating. Ev

If it were anyone else’s room, I wouldn’t have thought twice, but Ethan was my beta—and had no freaking right not answering my call when I could smell that he was in there. With a grunt, I shoved the heavy oak door open, the hinges creaking as it swung inward. And then I froze. There, standing in the middle of Ethan’s room, was Lucy.My breeder. My new breeder. The one who had only just arrived at the palace. The same woman I had seen in hushed conversation with my stepmother just a day ago. Her eyes snapped up to meet mine, wide, startled. Guilt? Fear? I couldn’t place the exact emotion on her face, but I saw it all the same. And Ethan stood near her, his jaw tight, arms folded across his chest like he’d just caught her in the middle of something.“What the hell is going on in here?” I demanded. But befo

I sank to the edge of the bed and let them fall freely. My hands trembled as I pressed them to my face. I hadn’t even been in this palace for two days, and already, I was under arrest. Already, people were trying to ruin me. For goodness sake I just came here to get money and save my mother! Why are all these sick people trying to make life difficult for me?And he—Alpha Ellison—hadn’t even given me a chance. No room to speak. No time to explain. Lucy. There was nothing elegant about the village training ground. No polished floors. No enchanted dummies or forged steel weapons like the ones back at the palace. Just bare earth, cracked from the heat of the sun, training dummies made from old logs and rope, and weapons cobbled together from whatever metal the local blacksmith had left. But here? Strength spoke louder than titles. The moment I stepped onto the open field, every head turned. The scent of sweat and testosterone was thick in the air. Male warriors—broad-chested, scarred, and towering—stood in a scattered circle, some training, others lounging as if they owned the place.Their gazes landed on me like arrows.Their judgment was louder than any words.I could feel it—the disdain, the mockery, the not-so-subtle smirks curling on their lips. The images of her smirk, the shutter sound of her phone, and the helplessness I felt as I floated in that water—they refused to leave me.The moment I stepped back into my room, I shut the door and leaned against it, trying to catch my breath."She’s disgusting," I whispered aloud, voice shaking. "This place should have been a rehabilitation center than a palace! How the hell did she just take pictures of me almost naked? Goodness, I was losing my mind already."I dried myself off and changed into something warm—black leggings and a sweatshirt I didn’t even remember packing. The mirror caught my reflection. My cheeks were pink from the chill and the anger. My eyes, red from unshed tears.I wasn’t going to cry. Not for her. Not for any of them. Then my phone buzzed.Once. Then again. My sheets clung to my damp skin, my hair dripping down my shoulders. “What the hell—?!”And then I saw them.Standing at the edge of my bed, with a silver bucket in hand and the kind of smug satisfaction that only decades of privilege could breed, was Luna Dowager Calantha. Right beside her, practically glowing with malicious glee, stood Aurora. Her hair was pulled back in a neat braid, her lips painted a venomous red that matched the evil twinkle in her eyes.“Rise and shine, darling,” Aurora said with a fake pout. “It’s time you start earning your place here.”I threw the soaked covers off my body and stood up, shivering in my thin nightgown. “You drenched me. Like my soul had taken a breath.Strange.I blinked at the ceiling, allowing myself a rare moment of stillness. The blankets were tangled around my legs, the air still warm with the scent of lavender and something faintly familiar. Then it hit me—Lucy. She had come to my room last night, hadn’t she?I shot upright, scanning the room. No sign of her. The armchair near the fireplace was empty. The slippers at the end of my bed hadn’t moved. Was it a dream? I could’ve sworn I felt her warmth beside me… the soft pressure of her fingers, the way her presence had wrapped around my heart like a balm. But now, she was gone. If she had been here at all.A bitter exhale escaped my lips as I ran a hand down my face. Dreams didn’t usually leave this kind of ache.I shoved the thought aside. Today wasn’t the

Lucy. The silence of the night wrapped around me like a warm blanket, the only sounds were the soft rustle of leaves outside and the rhythm of my own breathing. Sleep had come easier than I expected, especially after the emotionally draining week we’d all had. A sharp, guttural scream pierced through the quiet, jerking me upright. My heart stuttered in my chest. I blinked against the darkness, trying to shake the lingering fog of sleep. Another shout echoed down the hall—raw, pained, and unmistakably male.“Alpha Ellison.”I didn’t think—I just moved. I threw off the covers, the cold air biting at my legs as I raced out the door, my bare feet slapping against the cool marble floor. The hallway was dark and the only light that came in was the moonlight filtering through stained glass windows, casting ghostly colors across the walls. His screams only grew louder, more desperate.I was nearly at his door when something slammed into me from the side.“What the—?”My body hit the floor ha
