Lucy.

The next week was hell.

There’s no delicate way to put it. I woke up every morning to the sound of whispers, the sting of laughter that wasn’t even trying to hide anymore. Eyes followed me down every hallway of the palace, and not the kind filled with curiosity or admiration—these were sharp, dissecting stares, the kind people use when they’ve already decided who you are and are just waiting for you to live up to the worst version of it.

The rumors had exploded like wildfire, and I had no idea who lit the match.

"Lucy is infertile."

"She used Derek to try and stay relevant now that Alpha Ellison’s losing interest."

"Bet she doesn’t even have a wolf—how did she get this far anyway?"

I tried to hold my head high, to walk past the servants and nobles and guests with my chin up, my steps confident. But every whisper felt like a blade. And then came the worst part.

Pictures.

Someone had taken them—of Derek entering my room late at night. Once. Just once, the night we had that argumen

Ivy.I’d had enough. The roses. The letters. The poems stained with god knows what—Mucus’ idea of romance. Every damn morning, like clockwork, one of his cursed little pigeons or enchanted delivery wolves would show up at my door with something "heartfelt." I couldn’t even take a step outside without tripping over a bouquet or a love charm pulsing with his desperate energy. No more. That morning, I stood on the terrace, looking down at yet another basket of purple lilies “Burn it,” I told Kree, one of my men, and turned away before I could hear the sizzle. “And take him. Tonight.”Kree didn’t ask who I meant. He knew. The old warehouse on the outskirts of the borderlands still smelled like ash and fear. Perfect place for a chat. Mucus was slumped in the center of the floor, wrists bound behind him with silver-laced chains. Not enough to kill, just enough to sting like hell. He looked up when I stepped into the light, eyes glassy but gleaming with that annoying puppy-like devotion.“I

Alpha Ellison.I poured myself another glass of bourbon, my hand trembling just enough that the amber liquid sloshed over the rim. The fire in the hearth cracked with a low, mocking laugh, like it knew I was falling apart. I downed the drink in a single gulp, welcoming the burn that scorched its way to my gut. It was easier to feel that than the knife Lucy had lodged in my heart.Pregnant.She was pregnant. And it wasn't mine. The word echoed like a curse in my skull. I could still see her—Lucy's eyes shining with unshed tears the last time we spoke, her lips trembling as she whispered, "I'm sorry." But what the hell was she sorry for? For leaving me broken? For taking the child we were supposed to have and giving it to someone else?My breeder. I fucking hate women and the first time I gave one of them a chance, this is what I get?I slammed the empty glass on the table, shattering it into jagged shards. Blood bloomed across my palm where the glass bit me, but I didn’t care. Let it b

Lucy.My hands wouldn’t stop shaking. My fingers trembled, icy and clammy against my gown. Even though the sun still sat high in the sky outside the windows, I felt like I had been dropped into a pit of darkness. I kept hoping she would stop talking, but she didn't."Well, if Lucy is not going to say the truth, them I will." she blurted out, breaking through the silence that consumed everyone in the room, "That child in her womb does not belong to Alpha Ellison... but to Beta Ethan."The words hit like a blade plunging straight into my heart."What?" I whispered at first, unsure if my ears were betraying me. “No… No, that’s not true.”Gasps rippled through the hospital corridor where nurses had gathered. Even the doctor near my bed paused mid-scan. But all I saw, all I could see was her."You’re lying!" I shrieked, pushing off the bed where I laid down after the first altercation. My legs almost buckled beneath me, but I caught myself and stumbled forward."Why?" I screamed at her as

Lucy. The door shut behind Aurora with a gentle click, but it might as well have slammed with thunder. My eyes didn’t leave the space she’d occupied, even as her perfume lingered in the air—sweet, cloying, and utterly fake.Something about her didn’t sit right.I waited until her footsteps vanished down the hallway before moving. My breath came slow and controlled, but my heart was racing. She had just come into my room acting like she was looking for something. As if she hadn’t just spent the past few weeks treating me like a cockroach she couldn’t wait to squash.No. I wasn’t buying it.I turned to my bags upside down as I search everything. Even the bag that still lay on the chair beside the window. My hands hesitated in the air before I reached for it. I rifled through my items quickly—clothes folded with mechanical precision, a small mirror with a crack through the middle, makeup, perfume, a necklace I recognized from a ball weeks ago. Nothing stood out. Nothing screamed this wo

Lucy.I could barely feel my legs. The rain hadn’t stopped when I lifted Ellison off the ground, his limp body heavy against mine. I didn’t care that I was drenched, my clothes plastered to my skin, mud up to my knees. I didn’t care about the ache in my spine or the burning in my arms. I just ran. Holding him tighter with every step, whispering through clenched teeth, Don’t die. Don’t die. Please, Ellison, don’t die on me.By the time I reached the healer’s quarters, I was breathless and soaked, screaming for help like a madwoman.“Help! He’s not breathing right—somebody help me!”Guards and medics swarmed us. Hands pulled him from my grip, and they rushed him inside while someone tried to drag me into a side room.“I’m fine!” I snapped, shoving them away. “Help him! Just help him!”They wheeled him past thick wooden doors. The next time I saw him, he was surrounded by healers, spell-casters, and surgeons. They moved like shadows under torchlight—cutting, stitching, whispering incanta
