Chapter 1

Author: Charming Fries
Dad always boasted about Bernardo Vito's sharp efficiency, even though he had not officially taken the reins yet.

However, if he could not cough up a good explanation today, I would be off the hook for that arranged marriage, and they would find someone else to take his place.

When I got through to Bernardo on the phone, though, I was met with nothing but a chilly tone. "Who's this? Liliana's business isn't something for strangers like you to meddle with. You're out of line."

Before I could even spit out my name, he cut the call short. The dial tone mocked me, and I could not help but snort with laughter.

Liliana's boldness suddenly made sense. She had a heavyweight in her corner.

Liliana's lips twisted into a sneer. "Putting on airs, are we? I wonder what sleazy moves you pulled to snag Bernardo's number. Dreaming of rubbing elbows with him? You're a fool." Her eyes raked over me, pausing with disdain on my attire. "And this getup? The Vito family's maids are better dressed than you."

I have always gone for comfort over flash, so my wardrobe's pretty basic. However, to save my family's face, I was ready to splurge on a designer dress for the evening.

I stood tall, swallowing the fire in my chest. "Judging someone by their clothes is as low as it gets. You might want to ditch that attitude, or it'll come back to bite you."

She was just a small-time success, not worth another breath of argument. I pulled out a sleek black card and handed it to the cashier to pay for my dress.

The cashier looked like a deer in headlights, caught between Liliana and me, too scared to make a move. "Miss, I'm just a regular employee. I can't step on Ms. Conti's toes."

Liliana's laughter grew wilder, her eyes gleaming with madness:

"This place? It's Vito's family turf. Today, you won't be able to do a thing without my say-so, not even offload a measly screw!"

She yanked the black card from my grip and flung it out the door.

"Strutting around with that fancy card, thinking you're something? I'm no fool. Get lost, now!"

I was the apple of my father's eye, spoiled rotten for years, and nobody ever dared to throw such shade my way.

A hot, seething rage bubbled up in my chest.

I grabbed Liliana's arm in a vice-like grip, hauling her to the storefront, and demanded in an icy tone: "Pick up my card!"

The shop staff stared, their faces a mix of shock and awe.

"Holy smokes! She's got guts, talking to Ms. Conti like that."

"Ms. Conti is Mr. Vito's darling. Cross her, and he'll mince you up for the harbor sharks!"

Some onlookers tried to reason with me:

"Miss, you don't want to mess with the Vito family over a dress. Not even God could help you then."

"In Newvale City, crossing the Vito family is a no-go. They're too powerful. Better let Ms. Conti go."

"Just say you're sorry to Ms. Conti, beg her pardon, and maybe you'll get off easy."

Liliana wrenched free, her arrogance undiminished.

"Listen up, you lowlife! Grovel and apologize now, and maybe, just maybe, I'll let this slide.

"Otherwise, you'll regret it!"

I approached Liliana, who lay defeated on the ground. She trembled with fear, her earlier bravado gone."Ms. Olivieri, I was wrong, so very wrong. I shouldn't have taken your dress, shouldn't have struck you, please. Have mercy on me!"I leaned in, my voice calm and detached, and gave Anthony a simple command:"Strip her, and dump her in the slums.""Yes, Principessa."Liliana's scream was chilling as the guards dragged her away like she was nothing.Bernardo's eyes were wild with rage as he bellowed at me:"Cecilia! I see my mistake! Let Liliana go, and we'll marry right away, I'll make it up to you for the rest of my life."His plea sounded like the punchline to a bad joke."Marry?"I looked down at him, my eyes icy, "You think you're worthy?"I stepped on his chest, applying pressure slowly. "You were so keen to defend her, weren't you? Thought I wasn't good enough for the Vito family?"Now, let's get one thing straight: you didn't dump me, I, Cecilia Olivieri, am the o

The door swung open, and out stepped Oscar, sharp in a gray suit that meant business, striding in with purpose. The place went wild."Holy smokes! Is that the Don of the Vitos? He's just like the stories say, reeking of danger!""Did he come to stand up for his son after hearing he got pushed around?"Bernardo caught sight of Oscar and started yelling, fighting to get his attention."Dad, these bastards disrespected the Vitos and roughed me up. You have to make them pay."However, he was cut off mid-sentence when Oscar, in front of everyone, gave him a slap that echoed through the room. The Don, usually the picture of authority, was then ghostly white as he barked:"You animal! Apologize to Ms. Olivieri, now!"Bernardo looked up, his face a mix of shock and anger. "Dad, are you out of your mind? Liliana and I got thrashed by these nobodies, and instead of sticking up for us, you're making me say sorry?"He was always the Vito family's golden boy, never once seeing his father

His voice was soft, but the deadly undertone was clear as day.Bernardo tensed up, but the Vito family pride would not let him submit. He struggled against his restraints. "Who do you think you are? Causing trouble on Vito turf? I suggest you let us go now, or my father will have your head!"Dad looked down at him, a slight smile on his face."Your father, Oscar Vito? He doesn't have the guts."Bernardo's face went pale, and he roared in defiance:"No way! My father runs the Vito family. He's got the whole underworld in his pocket. You insult him, you're declaring war on the Vito family!"Dad did not bother with more talk, just dialed a number. As soon as the call connected, a shaky, old voice came through: "Mr. Olivieri? What can I do for you?"It was Oscar, sounding scared.Father's voice was eerily calm, yet it carried a weight that brooked no argument:"Oscar, your boy hurt my little Principessa and vowed to make her life a living hell. What do you think I should do with

Whispers rippled through the onlookers. "Holy smokes, who's she? To come up with a hundred mil just like that?" "And she looks so normal. That cash can't be real, right?"That scarred man was Anthony, the Underboss, my father's right hand. He marched over to me, his entourage of sharp-suited bodyguards in tow, each as imposing as the next. Anthony stopped before me, all due respect in his voice, "Principessa, Mr. Olivieri's handling a rat. He sent me to take care of things for you." I gave a small nod, accepting the handkerchief he handed me to dab away the blood on my lip.Liliana was still in the dark about the peril we were in. She eyed me skeptically, "Cut the act! There's no way you pulled together a hundred million that fast. These goons, this whole setup, it's gotta be a sham. Those cars are probably empty for all we know."Anthony did not utter a word, just gave a subtle signal with his hand. One of the guards sprinted to the nearest car and popped the trunk. The sight

Dad said that our proposed union propelled the Vito family to unprecedented heights of power. If Oscar Vito, Bernardo's dad, got wind of his son botching the alliance, Bernardo would be in for a world of punishment. With that thought, I was itching to get home and spill the beans on Bernardo. As I spun on my heel to leave, Liliana lunged and grabbed my dress bag."Think you can just walk out? Not without leaving that dress, you lowlife!"I liked to keep things understated, but I was no pushover. I seized her wrist with precise force, squeezing hard enough to make her think I might snap it."Ah!!!!"Her scream echoed as the bag slipped from her weakened grasp back into mine."Nobody takes what's mine unless I say so."Liliana's tear-streaked face turned to Bernardo, her eyes pleading: "Bernardo, she's humiliated me, you have to defend me."With a swift backhand, I silenced her, my voice like ice. "Say lowlife again, and you'll regret it."The slap wiped the smugness off Lilia

What a joke.I heard that line plenty, but it was always my dad laying it on someone else. However, that day, the tables turned, and I was the one with a target on my back.Little did she know that the Vito family owed its clout to my father's backing. In that town, nobody could make me eat my words.A smirk played at the edge of my lips. "Who's making that racket like a wild animal? Bernardo himself wouldn't have the guts to talk to me that way.""Who are you calling an animal?" Liliana shrieked, her voice laced with rage."Does anyone else here sound like they're howling at the moon?""You, you're nothing but trash!"Liliana, red with anger, swung her arm at me in a blind fury.Pathetic.As the Olivieri family's one and only heir.Dad had me training with fighting instructors since I was a kid. Against a poser like Liliana, I could take on three with one hand tied behind my back. Her hand barely reached out before I snatched her wrist. A swift side kick sent her crashing
