CHAPTER 29

(Call Me Father)

The office was quiet, too quiet.

The air smelled faintly of tobacco and aged leather, the heavy curtains drawn halfway across the tall windows.

Anna sat stiffly in the chair opposite Edward Fairchild's polished desk, her palms pressed against her lap to calm their shaking.

The sting from the rosebush scratches along her arm hadn't faded yet, though Emilia had quickly dabbed them with ointment before she was brought here.

Edward leaned back in his chair, his sharp eyes studying her with the weight of someone who saw far more than he let on. His hands folded loosely over the carved lion heads that served as the armrests.

“You're hurt,” he said finally, voice calm but cutting. “Are you all right, Anna?”

“Yes, Mr Fairchild,” she answered softly, lowering her gaze.

A pause stretched between them, broken only by the steady ticking of the clock on the far wall. Then Edward's lips curved faintly, though it was not a smile.

“Not Mr. Fairchild,” he corrected. “You'r

CHAPTER 33(Venom In The Crowd)Anna let Emilia tug her by the hand toward a rack of dresses that shimmered under the mall's soft lighting.Olivia trailed behind them, laughing as she carried an armful of tops she insisted Anna had to try. Their voices were light, teasing, filling the boutique with warmth as they held up bold scarlets, delicate pastels, each more daring than the last.Anna tried to match their animated mood, but her smile felt brittle around the edges.“Try this one, Anna,” Emilia urged, waving a deep crimson gown that seemed to bleed color into the air.Olivia giggled, eyes twinkling. “Yes, it'll make half the city faint when they see you. Liam won't know what hit him.”Anna smiled faintly but couldn't match their carefree mood. The laughter bounces off her, hollow. Each mirror she passed showed her face framed in doubt, and beneath it, Oliver's voice slithered back into her memory. His words replayed on a loop… harsh, frantic, bitter, boiling over guilt and denial.

  • A Bride's Last Secret    The Tape No One Must See

CHAPTER 32(The Tape No One Must See)Anna awoke slowly, her lashes fluttering against the pale morning light streaming into the spacious room. Her body felt heavy, deliciously spent, her muscles tingling with an ache that reminded her of the night before. She rolled slightly, hand searching the sheets beside her… but the space was cold, empty.William was gone. The pillow held no trace of him, not even the faint warmth of his skin, the only thing left behind was the smell of his cologne. Her chest tightened, sadness creeping in before she could stop it. Did he regret last night? Was he angry at her? Disappointed? The questions clawed at her heart, dragging her down as she sat up, clutching the sheets to her naked chest. Beneath her, a dull ache pulsed between her thighs, raw but intoxicating. She closed her eyes, a hot blush rising to her cheeks. So this is what it feels like…Her gaze fell to the deep crimson spot staining the sheet. Blood. Proof. Anna's blush deepened, shame and wo

  • A Bride's Last Secret    Burning Desires

CHAPTER 31(Burning Desires)William waited. His sharp gaze pinned her where she stood. His voice was low, calm, but there was a steel edge to it as he repeated the question.“Who hurt you, Anna?”Instead of answering, Anna turned, trying to walk past. The thought of standing under his scrutiny any longer made her stomach twist. But his hand shot out, catching her wrist with ease, pulling her back into the circle of his dominance. He tried again, eyes narrowing behind the lenses. “Don't test my patience. I asked you once. Don't make me repeat it.”Her control broke. Tears spilled down her cheeks as her body shook. “The first time you speak to me in three days,” she sobbed, her voice trembling and small, “you interrogate me like I'm a criminal.” The words hit him harder than he expected. His grip loosened, though not fully. He had braced himself for another excuse, another flimsy lie. But this… this crack of raw emotion, her sobs muffled as she slowly pressed her forehead onto his che

  • A Bride's Last Secret    The Mistress And The Wife

CHAPTER 30(The Mistress And The Wife)The warm glow of the desk lamp cast a circle of light across scattered papers on top of the mahogany table in William's study, adjoining their bedroom. A glass of whiskey sat untouched beside him.Tonight, his eyes burned from hours of reading contracts, the small text tugging at the strain that sometimes made his vision blur. He reached for the thin pair of rectangular glasses he rarely wore in public and slid them on, the world sharpening instantly. On other days, he opted for contact lenses. Few people knew of the issue; fewer dared to ask.The phone on his desk buzzed. He frowned, set down his pen and reached for it.He expected it was Ryan or perhaps Tonya. Instead, when he saw the number wasn't registered. He had one guess who might be calling him.Selene.And he wasn't in the mood to speak to her, at all.William debated ignoring it, but she was the sort who thrived on being ignored… she would only find other ways to claw back into his no

  • A Bride's Last Secret    Thorns And Secrets

CHAPTER 28(Thorns And Secrets)Two days had passed since the brutal argument with William, but the memory of it still clung to Anna like a shadow she couldn't shake off. His voice… cold, sharp, laced with barely controlled fury, still echoed in her head. And his smile, chilling. The sinister curve of his lips, haunted her whenever she closed. It was precisely that reaction, his blatant refusal to even speak Julia's name, that sharpened Anna's determination. If William would not tell her the truth, then she had to find it herself. The sun filtered through the canopy of oaks in the Fairchild garden, dappling the marble bench where Anna sat with Lauren's diary pressed against her knees. The morning air carried the scent of roses and freshly nipped grass, but it did nothing to soothe the restless pounding in her chest. And now here she was, in the quietest corner of the sprawling garden, turning the fragile pages of her dead sister's diary, chasing shadows through venomous ink.Anna's h
