Chapter 1

Author: Ethereal Realm

Inside the oversized hospital gown, my fists were clenched.

Today was supposed to be the day of my wedding with my fiance, Anthony Jackson.

But I was lying in a hospital bed because of a car accident.

The day before the wedding, I received a phone call.

On the other end of the line, Anthony was completely drunk.

The bar owner asked me to pick him up and take him home.

I dropped the wedding favors I was wrapping and rushed out after throwing on a coat.

Just before leaving, I saw the car keys Anthony had left at the door.

He had especially left them for me that day.

"You're going to the station to pick up your friends today. It'll be more convenient if you have a car. I left the keys by the door for you."

When he kissed my forehead, my heart was full of sweetness, grateful that I was marrying such a thoughtful man.

The streets were deserted late at night. At an intersection, a truck swerved past in front of me. I didn’t have time to think. Instinctively, I stepped on the brake—but it was useless.

I had a car accident.

Anthony rushed to the hospital soon after. Seeing me covered in blood sobered him up quite a bit.

"Where’s Calum? Get Calum here!"

Calum was our university classmate and now a well-known surgeon at this hospital.

I was wheeled into the operating room. Although I couldn’t open my eyes, I was still vaguely conscious.

I really wanted to comfort Anthony, to tell him not to worry, that I was okay.

My fingers moved slightly, but Anthony didn’t notice.

"Calum, let’s begin."

I heard Anthony’s voice.

"Anthony, are you sure you want to give Indya Nina's corneas? Once it's done, then Nina will be blinded for the rest of her life."

My heart began to pound violently. ‘Corneas? What corneas?’

"I’m sure. Nina and I are getting married soon. I’ll take care of her from now on. But Indya is different. She’s a painter. She can’t lose her eyes. That would be no different than taking her life."

A tear slipped from the corner of my eye. I used all the strength I had to try and open my eyes.

"I arranged this car accident just so Indya could get a cornea transplant. Don’t try to talk me out of it. Can you really bear to see Indya keep falling apart? This is what I owe her."

Calum didn’t respond.

I felt a warm palm press gently against my face.

"Don’t be afraid, Nina. From now on, I’ll be your eyes."

"Nina, I’ve avenged you. Please forgive me, okay?"I looked coldly at Anthony, who was begging like a dog in front of me.It was the first time I had seen him like this.It turned out he could also have his heart broken, and feel sad from losing someone he loved."I know that bitch Indya must have already told you, so I’ve locked her up. When you come back, feel free to take your anger out on her. I won’t show any mercy."‘Anthony’s completely lost it,’ I thought to myself."Anthony, even if Indya didn’t tell me, I would have known."He froze and looked up at me in disbelief."When you and Calum talked about taking my corneas, I could still hear."I could still hear. Those four words felt as heavy as a ton, ruthlessly pounding Anthony’s heart. He collapsed."Anthony, remember to sign the divorce agreement, or we’ll meet in court."After saying that, I turned and walked away.In this whole farce, no one could walk away unscathed.Everyone had lost miserably.Rio and Nelso

When Anthony returned to the country this time, the words Rio had said kept echoing in his mind."It needs to show sincerity."He trembled as he walked to Calum’s office. He even stumbled. He didn’t know whether trying to reclaim the corneas was right or wrong. But then he heard the conversation between Indya and Calum inside."You weren’t really blind to begin with. It’s already a huge mistake that I kept this from Nina. I can’t hurt her anymore.""Calum! Even you won’t help me? You weren’t like this before."Indya was crying intensely, but Anthony’s heart grew colder with each passing second."Who the hell does Nina think she is? Why should she occupy Anthony’s heart? Anthony’s heart can only be mine."Her hoarse voice didn’t earn a response from Calum. Her tone softened again."Calum, I know you like me too. If you help me, I’ll be willing to do anything. I’ll do anything. You know how tough things have been for me abroad. If I don’t find a reason, what will the media say

My surgery had gone very smoothly. The moment the bandages were removed, the soft light suddenly became intense."It’s too bright."Rio started laughing, and then her laughter turned into tears. She told me my donor had been a woman—an old lady. She had passed away last week due to terminal-stage cancer."Can I go see her?"Just as the words left my mouth, Nelson appeared at the door, holding a bouquet of tulips. He walked in and knelt in front of me, as if looking through me at someone else."Can I give you a hug?"His voice trembled. I didn’t refuse and opened my arms to him."It was my mom. These are my mom’s eyes."My heart skipped a beat.I looked at the boy in front of me—his eyes full of light, no trace of blindness."I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to deceive you. I just thought it was a faster way to approach you."A mixture of emotions arose in my heart, and I didn’t know how to comfort him.Later, I found out he was Rio’s junior classmate in medical school. He stud

That day, Rio arrived very late, with her clothes soaked in patches—it was obvious she had rushed over."I wouldn’t have gotten soaked indoors, don’t be in such a hurry next time."As we stepped outside the shop, she paused for a moment.I reached out, confused, trying to tug at her sleeve. But I missed. The next second, a sharp slapping sound exploded next to my ear."Anthony, you dare show up here again?"I froze in place.I hadn’t expected Anthony to leave behind Indya, the one he supposedly couldn't let go of, and come all the way here."Did you come to deliver the divorce papers?"I couldn’t see Anthony’s eyes, swollen from crying, nor could I see how it tore at his heart watching me grope my way down the steps. He began to reflect on the foolish things he had done, guilt flooding him like a rising tide."I didn’t sign it, Nina. I won’t sign it."I walked toward the sound of Anthony’s voice and slapped him hard across the face."Rio, check for me—did I hit him?"Rio

At the same time, I was sitting in the examination room that Rio had arranged for me."We can only wait and see if there’s a suitable cornea available."I felt Rio’s warm hand resting on my shoulder. After being blind for so long, I had already grown used to the darkness.I smiled at Rio, a smile that came from the heart.Back when my corneas were first stolen, I was completely broken.I thought nothing could be worse than the harm Anthony had done to me.But looking back now, I had already climbed out of that pit of the past. With the time I had left, besides waiting, there were still many things I could do.Who was to say this wasn’t a new beginning?Rio and I started a flower shop together. She was a doctor who chose to study abroad after graduation. To help me recover, Rio made nutritious meals for me every day, always switching things up."I don’t know how that damn Anthony was taking care of you. It’s bad enough that you lost your sight, now you’re skinny as a stick

"I was the one who told her.""I told her that you dug out her corneas for me."Indya clung to Anthony’s arm, speaking the coldest words in the gentlest tone."I know you feel guilty toward her, but love is something uncontrollable. Anthony, I can’t accept you marrying her, even if it’s just to make amends."What Indya said was touching. If it had been the old Anthony, he would’ve been deeply moved.Almost the very next second after hearing her words, Anthony’s expression turned cold."What did you say?"His hands clamped tightly around Indya’s neck, and his eyes turned bloodshot."The corneas were already given to you—why did you have to tell Nina! Do you have any idea how much that would hurt her!"So, Anthony had known everything all along, and still chose to hurt me without hesitation.A flash of disbelief crossed Indya’s eyes, and then she burst into a mocking laugh."I know. But Anthony, weren’t Nina’s corneas offered up by your own hands? Now you want to play Mr. Nic
