Third Person's POV

Azalea presses her lips into a thin line as she looks from her book and watches her mate. He's been different since he came back from Mike's pack. He seems distant and always lost in thought, just as he is now. The book he was reading rested in his lap as he stared out at the sky.

She wishes she knew what he was thinking. Every time she asks, he tells her nothing and says he was just zoning out. She can tell it was a lie. The way he looks when he's staring off into space, she can tell he's deep in thought. The way his muscles twitch around his eyes, and the way, at times, she can see fire swirling in those eyes. She's even caught the faint scent of smoke rolling off of him once or twice.

“Is everything okay?” Azalea asked when Maverick set his book down and stood.

“Yes, I just need some air,” Maverick said, kissing her head and stepping onto the balcony.

Maverick takes a deep breath in through his nose to clear his senses. He places his hand on the railing and
