Chapter 1

Author: Half A Goodbye
I decided to call off this fake wedding.

"Lucas, I know you're about to get married, but this opportunity to further your studies is really rare. You need to decide whether to prioritize your future or your family..."

"I'm willing to take this opportunity," I decisively interrupted my advisor before he could finish. Clearly surprised by my quick decision, Joseph Franklin broke into a relieved smile.

"You're willing to go? That's amazing! I'm sure you'll do really well."

I swiftly scanned the flight details.

"Yes, I can complete the enrollment procedures by next week."

After hanging up, I booked the ticket immediately.

In exactly seven days, Sophia Bennett and I would have our wedding. Today, we were supposed to select our reception menu together. Sophia sent me a message saying she had to personally handle an important client.

"You can decide. I completely trust your judgment," she said.

It had been less than an hour since she left when the explosive news appeared on social media, making me marvel bitterly at the power of the internet. I pointed at the most expensive menu option and told the hotel manager, "We'll take this one."

Since Sophia insisted on paying initially, this would be my last gift to her. As I left, I glanced at the matching bracelet on my wrist. The irony struck me hard, and I tossed it into a nearby trash can.

I had believed I could handle this calmly and control my emotions. But when I saw Sophia with another man in the car I'd bought her, right there in the garage of our new home, I completely lost it.

I gripped my phone so tightly that it felt as if it would break, eyes bloodshot. Through the car window, I clearly saw them passionately tangled together on the custom leather seats I had specially ordered for her. Those seats had become their bed of betrayal.

The dull ache in my chest exploded into a thousand sharp blades, twisting inside me and nearly choking me with pain. Five years of genuine devotion, yet I still couldn't understand how Sophia could cruelly stomp on it like this.

I opened the dashcam app on my phone, and the video showed Sophia cuddled in the arms of that man, whispering, "I've been thinking about doing this with you in this car ever since he gave it to me."

The man chuckled softly, kissing her lips. "Then let me fulfill your wish today."

She wrapped her arms around his neck, playfully whispering, "You're so bad. This is the new car my fiance gave me."

The man's feigned hesitation only made her more eager.

Leaning close, she breathed seductively into his ear. "Don't worry. Lucas is boring and strict. He won't even touch the car until our wedding day."

The man smirked, his fingers tracing her lips. "Aren't you worried he'll find out and call off the wedding?"

"Relax. He can't live without me."

As soon as she said that, she seductively pressed herself against him.

Nauseated, I forced myself to watch their intimacy as a kind of punishment. Once they left, my fingers trembled as I pressed "save" on the video.

"Watch out behind you!" Samantha shouted.I spun around and saw Adrian charging at me with a pocket knife, less than three feet away, shouting hysterically, "You bastard! Go to hell!"Samantha pulled me into her arms. At that moment, I heard a low groan. Afraid she'd been hurt, I quickly checked her over, only to hear Adrian screaming in rage."Why? Why would you save him? You loved me the most. He rejected you! Why are you still protecting him?"It was then that I noticed Sophia had collapsed on the ground, the knife embedded in her chest. She ignored Adrian's desperate cries, her eyes fixed solely on me."Lucas..." Sophia was rushed to the hospital, while Adrian was taken away by the police.I later learned Adrian had broken up with Sophia earlier because he'd found a wealthy woman, believing he'd marry into riches. Instead, she'd taken him to a remote rural area, where he'd struggled until he finally escaped.Desperate for a comeback, Adrian had tried reconnecting with Sophia

I avoided her reaching hands. "Sophia, please stop. It's over. Can't we each move on?""Do you hate me? You can scold me, even hit me, but please don't treat me like this."It felt absurd to see her acting so devoted. She had clearly said before that I was just a stand-in, yet now she was putting on this melodramatic act. It was sickening."Sophia, listen carefully. I don't have any feelings left for you. Not love, not even hatred. I just want to have my own life."She stared at me in disbelief, tears forming. "How is that possible? You used to love me so much. How can you not love me anymore?"Suddenly, her gaze fell on the gift box I was holding, and her expression darkened instantly. "You found someone new, didn't you? "That's why you're rejecting me. You threw away my gift, but you accepted someone else's gift?"Although it was merely a corporate gift from the company, I decided to play along. "Yes, I did. Will you leave now?"My words completely enraged her, and she frant

I stared at her expressionlessly. "I let you in for a reason.""You're willing to give me another chance?" she asked hopefully.A cold smile appeared on my face. "No, Sophia. It's to end things completely. You've made me question myself, question our past, and doubt if any of it was ever real...""No, it's not like that!" she interrupted desperately, insisting that our time together was her most cherished memory."You're lying even now."I pulled up the video from that online post and showed it to her.Sophia's face turned pale, and she was left speechless. Eventually, she lowered her head and turned to leave, but then she stopped at the door."Would you believe me if I told you that I never understood how much you meant to me until I lost you?""It doesn't matter anymore, Sophia. Whatever I felt for you is already gone."Just after I closed the door, the noise came from outside my bedroom. Samantha Carter poked her head out, hair tousled and eyes sleepy. "I can smell the food

Sophia's face stung from the slap, her frustration mounting even higher because of my absence."Dad, is this necessary? Adie did nothing wrong. Lucas didn't show up, so I just asked Adie to fill in temporarily. We couldn't let our guests keep waiting!"Seeing Sophia defending Adrian made William's chest heave with rage. "Worried about guests waiting? Look at the mess you've made! See clearly what's playing up there!"Only then did Sophia and Adrian notice the silent video playing on the large screen. Their intimate encounter in the car was on full display, leaving nothing to the imagination.Sophia turned scarlet with shame while Adrian stood speechless in shock."Who did this?" Sophia demanded sharply. The hotel manager hurriedly approached, anxious to clear the hotel's name. "Mr. Young provided this video to us in advance. We weren't informed of the details..."Sophia stood stunned. So Lucas had known all along. Was that why he purposely hadn't shown up today? She frantically

  • A Broken Heart Is a Dead Heart   Chapter 5

Thinking back to five years ago, when I first met Sophia, she'd been entirely different from most young women who were fresh out of college—rather than lively and cheerful, she'd always worn a cold, distant expression that kept people away. The first time I saw her, I'd found myself inexplicably drawn to her aloofness. After a full year of pursuit, I thought I had finally won her heart. Little did I know that what I saw as love was just her calculated decision to go along with things. On the flight, I drifted into a dream. I dreamed of what should've been my own wedding, except it was another man standing beside Sophia....Dressed impeccably in a suit, Adrian asked cautiously, "Soph, Mr. Young hasn't arrived yet. Could something have happened? Are we doing the right thing?"Sophia's eyes flickered briefly, but she quickly regained her composure. "What could possibly happen to him? He's probably just sulking, waiting for me to beg him to come. Once he sees you taking his place, h

Sophia definitely knew about my allergy, and an embarrassed expression flashed across her face. She reached out to help me, but I brushed her hand away.Once I returned home, I began running a high fever. Since I remained cold and distant, Sophia seemed to harbor resentment as well. After I took my medicine, just as I was drifting into sleep, Adrian knocked on our door. "Soph, I'm having trouble sleeping..."In my hazy state, I felt Sophia get up beside me. A little while later, I heard her soft voice sing in the guest room.Maybe my weakened condition made the pain worse. I sweat profusely until the medication finally pulled me into a deep sleep. When I woke, it was already noon the next day. Covered in sweat, I headed to the kitchen for water, only to find Sophia at the dining table, meticulously cracking crab shells for Adrian."You shouldn't bother. It's too much trouble. Just wait and enjoy," Sophia said sweetly. As soon as I walked into the kitchen, Adrian looked up and sa
