"Don't ever let anyone take what's mine?" His. The word echoed in my head, hitting me like a wave. Did he just mean the words he spoke? Since when was I his? Since when did he want me to be his? But I didn't ask. I couldn't even breathe properly at this point. I knew that if I dared opened my mouth to speak, I would find myself saying the wrong things. Slade's arm tightened around my waist. My hands flattened against his shoulders, feeling the heat radiating through his jacket as our bodies moved closer. I could perceive his cologne, the musk mixed with mint scent. So cool, so nice. I leaned in to him and he exhaled softly giving me a m good whiff of wine from his breath. I dared to look at him, to look into those eyes. Dark, thick.. His hand moved, lower and I gasped. Louder this time. "What are you doing?" I hissed at him, my cheeks were flaming. Slade leaned closer and my heart started thumping in response. "I'm making sure we don't humiliate our parents." He said coolly. "Don't you think all eyes will be on us now? The children of this… union." I couldn't stop my eyes from wandering around and sure enough, pairs and pairs of eyes were on me. My grip on his shoulder tightened and I stared at his expensive-looking dark polished leather shoes. I had just danced here, with Van. I didn't remember feeling so aware. "Relax." Slade breathed, his thumb moved in circular motions on my back. Somehow, the rhythm began to flow with my breathing and my grip loosened. "Just follow my lead." He whispered. I nodded, still staring down at his shoes. Then the music started and he started to move over the dance floor. I followed, catching my breath. "Look at me, Makaira." He commanded. My head snapped up and our eyes met as goosebumps filled my skin. "It's okay." He murmured, intertwining his fingers with mine. I felt my head moving, in nods. And my legs following, trying to catch up with the steady pace he was setting. His eyes stayed on mine unblinking, that I was focused on my reflection in them. "It's okay." He said again, calmer, softer so that the slow music faded into the background. His thumb never stopped tracing circles around my back, so much that I enjoyed the torture, suppressing the delicious chills that each rub sent through my body. He gently twirled me around and I cooperated perfectly. The crowd responded with a unified sharp, admiring gasp. But I didn't care that they were looking, I had found comfort in those warm palms of his. Unable to keep holding his eyes, I took my attention to other parts of his body. Like the jaw muscle ticking or the loose strands of his hair that had fallen forward, I wanted to gently push them away. My eyes moved down and there were his pink lips. Perfectly drawn, perfect lines of hair above his upper lip… my heart began to race as I replayed the way he kissed me at the lake house. I wanted to— He moved back from me and my ears rang as I snapped back into reality with a lot of claps. People were clapping and smiling at us. The music had ended and the dance floor was clearing for a break. "Come on." Slade's voice was sharp as he took my hand and led me away. I cast one glance at Mum but she was speaking to Tom and laughing about something. I smiled sadly as Slade led me through a corner. I shook my hand away from his, the moment we were out of sight. "Where are we going?" I asked, smoothing my dress and trying my best to avoid his eyes. "My pool house. Erica said we can't take the car. So you have to know it's a long walk from here." He warned. I responded with a soft sigh and said nothing. I let him lead me, maybe a step ahead as we walked in silence. I didn't want to trip. Because my mind was a junk. I could still feel his hand against my body, feel his warm minty breath on my neck, see those lips… So I was having a hard time, being calm. I kept stealing glances at him, slow and careful. Sometimes, we locked gazes. But we said nothing. "Here we are." He finally announced minutes after. I felt a little flustered and even though the sound of loud music was a red flag to me, I was more relieved to be here. Slade led us through a picket fence and after a flowered gate, a pool came into view with a house looking above it. "Wow." I breathed at the picture-perfect house. I am scared of water, but this pool… it looked perfect, too pretty to even be swam in. It sat pretty and still in turquoise, cute floaters floating around. We went up the stairs and then past the open sliding doors. We were welcomed by kids lounging around in a large studio apartment. "If it isn't the newest step-siblings in town." Someone announced and a couple of cheers soon filled the room. My eyes scanned the room quickly as I walked further in with Slade. Two boys in the living room area, jackets missing, ties off, playing a game; three girls were seated around the little dining table. "Oh it's the pretty bridesmaid." One of the girls said loudly. She stood up and started to walk towards us. Perfect platinum blonde hair, a body-perfect halter neck gown and adorned with expensive jewelry, I knew who she was. Shelly McKenzie. Everyone knew Shelly McKenzie. PineCrest's very own beauty queen bee and an aspiring Miss United States of America. The most famous girl from one of the wealthiest families in the town. She is practically PineCrest royalty. "Wow! Doesn't she make it easy to see why Mr. Horton married her mum. I too would commit a scandal for a face like that." She eyed me with a smirk on her lips. "Shelly!!" A few of the others cautioned. "It's true." She shrugged. "Marrying one of your workers in a shock is scandalous." Her shoulders remained high. Then her eyes widened as she got to me. "Oh my gosh! Are your eyes real? Or do you have contacts on?" She asked me, peering closely. "They're real." "So pretty." She said, giving me a wink. Then she moved towards my left "Hey baby." Then she rose on her toes, wrapped both arms around Slade’s neck… …and kissed him. My stomach dropped. I couldn’t breathe.(MAKAIRA'S POV)I didn't sleep that night. Not a single wink.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Slade's face. The way he'd looked at me when he said those words. You're mine. The way his voice had cracked just slightly, like he was admitting something that scared him.I tossed and turned, clutching the teddy bear to my chest like it was some kind of anchor.Dream of me?What had possessed me to say that? I'd typed it before I could stop myself, my fingers moving on their own accord. And then I'd spent the next hour staring at my phone, waiting for a reply that never came.He said he'd dream of me.At least, I thought he did. He hadn't actually typed it. But he hadn't denied it either.I groaned, pressing my face into my pillow. This was insane. I barely knew him. He'd been cold and distant and sometimes downright mean. But then there were moments—fleeting, fragile moments—where I caught a glimpse of something else. Something tender. Something raw.And it made me want to know more.--
(MAKAIRA'S POV)I didn't know what had come over Slade. One moment he was complaining about boredom and checking his emails, the next he was squaring up to this Harry guy like he was about to start a fistfight over a stuffed bear."Step back." Slade's voice had been cold as ice, his jaw set in that rigid way I was starting to recognize meant he was holding something back.I opened my mouth to say something—to tell him it was fine, that I didn't actually care that much about the toy—but the words died in my throat when I saw the look in his eyes.He was furious. Not at me, I realized. At Harry. At the way Harry had looked at me, the way he'd kissed my hand, the way he'd called me beautiful."Slade—" I started, but he wasn't listening. He was already at the counter, slapping down money for the game. The attendant, a bored-looking teenager with acne and a nose ring, perked up when she saw the cash."Three rounds each," Slade said without looking at her. "We'll see who gets the highest sc
(SLADE’S POV)Life can be a bitch you know! After the first day I set my eyes on Makaira five years ago, I didn’t see her until the first day school resumed after the Christmas holiday. My dad had invited some kids from my school to celebrate Christmas with us and so I automatically assumed that she was one of the kids.I should have found out more about her but she provoked so much emotions from me that I didn’t want to know anything about her. Not even her name. Maybe if I had done my research, I would have noticed the same surname she shared with Mrs Shanice. And maybe I woukd havw not been too blind ans stupid to ignore the striking resemblance they shared. Maybe I would have not been such a jerk and a terrible person to her.If I had known that I would have a shot at being so close to her, then maybe I wouldn’t have been such an asshole—“That was so great!!” Makaira exclaimed as we feel in to step with each other. We had just finished a ride at the Ferris wheel, an experienc
(SLADE'S POV)"A fair!!" She exclaimed, eyes widened as she peeked through the window at the huge iron gates."More like a VIP preview night." I corrected. My attention was on my phone, where I was going through my itinerary."Even better! Because now we have a lot of rides to ourselves." She was craning her neck even harder now. "And I think I see older people.""Probably. Our parents were the ones invited." I couldn't keep my eyes on my phone for long, I had to steal a glance again and I was disappointed because I couldn't see those sparkling blue eyes but at least she wasn't so sad anymore. Her excitement was palpable, it has been since we got here and she realized that we are here for the exclusive launch of a fair."What are we really waiting for?" She asked, her body almost out of the car.A couple of knocks on the window interrupted my answer."That." I said with a sigh as I slipped my phone in my pocket. "Are you ready?""I've been ready since we got here! I love fairs so much
(KAIRA'S POV)"I'm not a Horton." I said to myself, my teeth gnashed against each other. But the person who stared back at me in the mirror looked very much like a Horton.A beauty team had just finished with me. Light makeup, perfect hair pinned up, a beautiful beige crop top over the classiest pair of high-waisted denim jeans I had ever seen.Slade was right, we didn't go home. We went to a hotel and I got ready in a beautiful suite that looked like it belonged to a princess.I couldn't deny that I looked pretty but everything wasn't sitting right with me."I'm not a Horton." I repeated to my reflection in the mirror.I kept my eyes shut trying to suppress the emotions that were building inside. Then I grabbed the little pink purse and stepped out of the door. But Slade was standing right there so I doubled back and missed my steps because of the heeled glass slippers I was wearing.I was reaching for the doorknob, to grasp it for a little stability but I missed it and would have cr
(KAIRA’S POV)I have lived in PineCrest for thirteen years, which means I have also had the privilege (thanks to Tom Horton) of going from PineCrest elementary to PineCrest high school. I kid you not, despite all these years I have made no friends. Literally, none at all. The most attention I get is when I am getting bullied or being laughed at. The only people I am cordial is some of my teachers, and of course Mrs Skye, our ink club matron. That being established, you know how antisocial I am in school so I kid you not when I say that I have no idea who the angry but pretty brunette, holding my phone is.Her almond eyes looked me over like my presence deeply disgusted her.“Who the hell do you think you are?” She greeted.I frowned, unsure of what to say. She leaned forward. “It doesn’t matter that your cheap mother found her way in to the Horton family, you will always be a charity case.” She laughed. “Slade already made it clear to us all.”My heart sank. The fact that she invol
(KAIRA'S POV)Slade put me down immediately and draped his jacket over my shoulder. I stood like a doll, unmoving, waiting as the footsteps presented their owners."Oh my goodness, what happened, baby?" Mum cried as she ran towards me. "We were just on our way to get you both and then we heard you
(KAIRA'S POV)Slade was torturing me with silence. Simply leading the way.I followed him closely like a pupil behind a headmaster, past the house doors, to the hedged pathways, to the garden gates, past chrysanthemums, a variety of roses, orchids, daisies… and then carefully past the stepping ston
(KAIRA'S POV) The large iron gates opened, and I felt the familiar weight of panic settle behind my ribs. I pressed my sweaty palms against the expensive leather while my body stiffened in the backseat. I wanted to close my eyes but somehow I couldn't. I sat, like a programmed robot, and watched
(KAIRA'S POV) "Mr. Horton, your project partner is… Miss Jin." Our English teacher, Mrs. Reed, announced. My stomach sank, and a heavy weight transferred to my chest. Of all the people in PineCrest High, it had to be Slade Horton. Football captain. Sole hair of Horton Empire. Most popular an
