LOGIN(KAIRA'S POV)
I would have never made it to the dining room if not for the kind lady in a uniform. She helped lead me after seeing me go back and forth in a large hallway at least twice. It's a very big house (that doesn't quite fit it). Actually, it's a huge mansion and I have no idea how they expected me to find my way without some help. When I walked into the kingly dining room with the large table of four in the center, I could tell they had been waiting for me. Mum stood up immediately and approached me with a warm, guilty smile on her face as I walked in. "Heyy, we were beginning to get worried about you." She greeted softly. "Hi." I darted a glance at Mum and Tom as I was led to an empty chair at the table, beside Mum and opposite 'you know who' whom I was intentionally avoiding eye contact with. I was seated beside Mum, across from Slade. Tom sat at the head. The table was small enough for intimacy, but the space between us felt like miles. I kept my head bent, staring at the beautiful embroidered placemats seated on the perfectly ironed white linens. "Hey Kaira." Tom greeted cheerfully, almost like I was a child. "I'm sorry, I'm late. I had some trouble finding here." My voice barely made it past a whisper but they heard me well enough. "Oh, it's no problem at all." Tom said with a nervous chuckle. "I knew it wouldn't be easy and that's why I was surprised when Slade said you wanted to find your way without his help." My head shot up and I glanced at Slade for the first time since I got into the dining room. His blank eyes stared back expectantly and then his lips curved for a flash second. I glared at him. He had been sent to get me and all he did was say those crushing words to me. I looked away from him, not wanting to remember those hurtful words or even to think about the kiss (if I'm being honest, that's the main struggle in this dining room now). "But I'm impressed." I was grateful to Tom for continuing the conversation and taking back my attention. "If you want to find your way on your own, then it means you want to adjust quickly. That's remarkable." I glanced at Mum and she was smiling lightly at me. "Y-yes. I-I want to know my way around." I found myself saying. "Kaira has always been independent." Mum pitched in. "That's easy to see." Tom added with a nod. "Her perfect academic record even with less of your presence is remarkable." "Th-thank you." I said softly, avoiding gazes. "Slade, you should meet Kaira for some tutoring sessions." Tom added. "Maybe that will help." A heavy silence descended and the room felt smaller. I could not stop myself from glancing at Slade. Thankfully he wasn't looking at me. His gaze, now fiery, was fixated on his father. But Tom seemed more interested in his glass of water than his son's reaction. "Slade is a brilliant child." Mum said, a genuinely adoring smile as she looked over at him. "He is, but he spends a lot of his time on football. Perhaps if he focuses more on academics, then he could think better of his future." Tom said after setting down the glass of water. Then he turned to me, a grin on his face. "Kaira has other interests too, like the writing you speak of, Shanice. Yet she has an unbeaten academic record in school. Her results are always unbelievable to look at." My cheeks were burning and from the corner of my eyes, I could tell that Slade's heavy gaze was on me and maybe that’s why I looked at him, again. Sure enough, he was staring right back at me. So hard that I was forced to look away. The attention felt suffocating and the silence longer than it actually was, so I was relieved when the door opened and the servers began placing the food on the table. An amazing aroma wafted through the air and I wanted to sigh in response. What more to reduce the burning anxiety in me than food? Thankfully I wasn't the only one distracted by food; everyone started adjusting napkins, plates and cutleries. Then bowls started going around. First, a plate of hot, golden brown bread, a plate of butter, a bowl of steaming spaghetti and meatballs, a plate of crusty delicious smelling potatoes, and finally a bowl of crispy stir-fried vegetables. There were other dishes on the table but I didn't dare to look; I was already overwhelmed. It all looked delicious but it was too much for me. I am a big lover of food but I have never had access to so many options. I reached for a plate and caught Slade starring. Again. Don’t think about it! Don’t think about it! But it was too late. I was already thinking about the kiss. My lips tingled and my stomach tightened. Again, I lost the stare contest by breaking away. I carefully put some spaghetti and meatballs on my plate, took a bun bread, and that was enough for me. Soon, the room was filled with sounds of cutlery and chewing. Everyone seemed to be eating normally but my fork felt heavy in my hand. It didn't stop me from eating though; the food was too delicious to lose against the tension in my veins. It was so saucy and the meatballs? It felt like I was eating at a five-star restaurant until a loud throat clearing brought me back to the opulent dining room. It was Tom. And he was wiping the sides of his mouth with a napkin, his eyes pinned at the end of the table—to Mum. She was smiling shyly at him as well. I dropped my fork, feeling a weird sensation crawling up my back. Slade hadn't looked up from his plate. He seemed to be enjoying the food even more than I was. "I have an announcement to make, everyone." Tom announced, transferring his gaze from Mum to me and Slade. I turned to Mum and our eyes only met for a split second before she broke it, bending down to fold her napkin. My pulse spiked. Yeah, something is definitely going on and I don't think I'll like it. "Shanice and I have decided…." Tom began. I stole a quick glance at Slade and he was still eating, so casually that I wondered if I was the only one getting this news for the first time. "We'll be getting married tomorrow." Tom finished. Tomorrow. The word hung in the air like smoke. I turned to Slade. He wasn't eating anymore. His fork was frozen above his plate. His jaw was tight. Then the sound of cutlery dropping loudly on a plate sliced through the dining room. He looked up. His eyes met mine. Then the mask was back. But I had seen it. So we're both just getting this news.(MAKAIRA'S POV)I didn't know what had come over Slade. One moment he was complaining about boredom and checking his emails, the next he was squaring up to this Harry guy like he was about to start a fistfight over a stuffed bear."Step back." Slade's voice had been cold as ice, his jaw set in that rigid way I was starting to recognize meant he was holding something back.I opened my mouth to say something—to tell him it was fine, that I didn't actually care that much about the toy—but the words died in my throat when I saw the look in his eyes.He was furious. Not at me, I realized. At Harry. At the way Harry had looked at me, the way he'd kissed my hand, the way he'd called me beautiful."Slade—" I started, but he wasn't listening. He was already at the counter, slapping down money for the game. The attendant, a bored-looking teenager with acne and a nose ring, perked up when she saw the cash."Three rounds each," Slade said without looking at her. "We'll see who gets the highest sc
(SLADE’S POV)Life can be a bitch you know! After the first day I set my eyes on Makaira five years ago, I didn’t see her until the first day school resumed after the Christmas holiday. My dad had invited some kids from my school to celebrate Christmas with us and so I automatically assumed that she was one of the kids.I should have found out more about her but she provoked so much emotions from me that I didn’t want to know anything about her. Not even her name. Maybe if I had done my research, I would have noticed the same surname she shared with Mrs Shanice. And maybe I woukd havw not been too blind ans stupid to ignore the striking resemblance they shared. Maybe I would have not been such a jerk and a terrible person to her.If I had known that I would have a shot at being so close to her, then maybe I wouldn’t have been such an asshole—“That was so great!!” Makaira exclaimed as we feel in to step with each other. We had just finished a ride at the Ferris wheel, an experienc
(SLADE'S POV)"A fair!!" She exclaimed, eyes widened as she peeked through the window at the huge iron gates."More like a VIP preview night." I corrected. My attention was on my phone, where I was going through my itinerary."Even better! Because now we have a lot of rides to ourselves." She was craning her neck even harder now. "And I think I see older people.""Probably. Our parents were the ones invited." I couldn't keep my eyes on my phone for long, I had to steal a glance again and I was disappointed because I couldn't see those sparkling blue eyes but at least she wasn't so sad anymore. Her excitement was palpable, it has been since we got here and she realized that we are here for the exclusive launch of a fair."What are we really waiting for?" She asked, her body almost out of the car.A couple of knocks on the window interrupted my answer."That." I said with a sigh as I slipped my phone in my pocket. "Are you ready?""I've been ready since we got here! I love fairs so much
(KAIRA'S POV)"I'm not a Horton." I said to myself, my teeth gnashed against each other. But the person who stared back at me in the mirror looked very much like a Horton.A beauty team had just finished with me. Light makeup, perfect hair pinned up, a beautiful beige crop top over the classiest pair of high-waisted denim jeans I had ever seen.Slade was right, we didn't go home. We went to a hotel and I got ready in a beautiful suite that looked like it belonged to a princess.I couldn't deny that I looked pretty but everything wasn't sitting right with me."I'm not a Horton." I repeated to my reflection in the mirror.I kept my eyes shut trying to suppress the emotions that were building inside. Then I grabbed the little pink purse and stepped out of the door. But Slade was standing right there so I doubled back and missed my steps because of the heeled glass slippers I was wearing.I was reaching for the doorknob, to grasp it for a little stability but I missed it and would have cr
(KAIRA’S POV)I have lived in PineCrest for thirteen years, which means I have also had the privilege (thanks to Tom Horton) of going from PineCrest elementary to PineCrest high school. I kid you not, despite all these years I have made no friends. Literally, none at all. The most attention I get is when I am getting bullied or being laughed at. The only people I am cordial is some of my teachers, and of course Mrs Skye, our ink club matron. That being established, you know how antisocial I am in school so I kid you not when I say that I have no idea who the angry but pretty brunette, holding my phone is.Her almond eyes looked me over like my presence deeply disgusted her.“Who the hell do you think you are?” She greeted.I frowned, unsure of what to say. She leaned forward. “It doesn’t matter that your cheap mother found her way in to the Horton family, you will always be a charity case.” She laughed. “Slade already made it clear to us all.”My heart sank. The fact that she invol
(FIVE YEARS AGO)(THIRD PERSON'S POV)DECEMBER 25TH, 2019It was the first time in five years that there would be a Christmas party hosted by the Hortons. It was the first Christmas party since Margo Horton's disappearance. The house was beautifully decorated and the rooms were colorfully fully lit to celebrate the season. For a family with only two members currently present, the mansion was filled with many people. All workers and close relatives.Slade Horton, aged 12, was seated at the foot of the stairs, watching as the workers of the Horton household sang Christmas carols. He was barely noticed by anyone and was so carried away by the carols that when a gentle hand landed on his shoulder, he jumped. He calmed down when he saw that it was his nanny."It's only me, Slade. I'm so sorry that I startled you." Shanice's gentle voice assured him.She squatted so that she now met him at eye level."'S okay." Slade said, hugging his fitted leather jacket tighter to himself.Shanice sat be
(KAIRA'S POV) The large iron gates opened, and I felt the familiar weight of panic settle behind my ribs. I pressed my sweaty palms against the expensive leather while my body stiffened in the backseat. I wanted to close my eyes but somehow I couldn't. I sat, like a programmed robot, and watched
(KAIRA'S POV) "Mr. Horton, your project partner is… Miss Jin." Our English teacher, Mrs. Reed, announced. My stomach sank, and a heavy weight transferred to my chest. Of all the people in PineCrest High, it had to be Slade Horton. Football captain. Sole hair of Horton Empire. Most popular an
(KAIRA'S POV)Slade put me down immediately and draped his jacket over my shoulder. I stood like a doll, unmoving, waiting as the footsteps presented their owners."Oh my goodness, what happened, baby?" Mum cried as she ran towards me. "We were just on our way to get you both and then we heard you
(KAIRA'S POV)Slade was torturing me with silence. Simply leading the way.I followed him closely like a pupil behind a headmaster, past the house doors, to the hedged pathways, to the garden gates, past chrysanthemums, a variety of roses, orchids, daisies… and then carefully past the stepping ston
