Drowning into sorrow

Edith walked on the road aimlessly. Her feet dragged along the pavement like a broken doll left to wander. What she had seen was the one thing she had never imagined in her dream.

She had been a fool patthetically, blindly in love. He was drunk, yet she chose to trust him.

What a delusion.

She had never been chosen. She had only been acquired, like something purchased because it was necessary, not because it was wanted.

Heartbroken, she came to a halt and scanned the road for a cab. She had no home to return to, no one to call, no shoulder to cry on.

When a taxi finally pulled up in front of her, she opened the door and slid inside.

“Take me to the busiest bar in town,” she said.

Her voice was flat, hard and edged with something hollow. The eyes that had once been bright with hope were now distant, drained of warmth.

The driver hesitated, glancing at her through the rearview mirror.

“I don’t know many bars that would suit someone like you, Madam,” he said cautiously. “But I can take you to one where the rich preferred to spend their nights.”

He studied her reflection briefly. Even in her broken state, she carried herself like someone who did not belong to the ordinary family.

“Yes,” Edith murmured.

She leaned her head against the cold window, staring at the darkened sky as the city lights blurred past. Tears slipped silently down her cheeks, one after another, and the weight inside her chest grew heavier with every mile.

Meanwhile, back at the mansion, Freya gently set her teacup down on the polished table before her.

A welcoming smile curved her lips as her younger son entered the room.

“Markrum,” she said warmly, “ Where have you been? You didn’t come home last night, and your father mentioned you were not at the office this morning either.” Her tone softened, but her eyes sharpened with interest. “Is there something you are hiding from me?”

“Yeah, mom!” Markrum said casually as he dropped onto the seat beside her. Slipping an arm around her shoulders he grinned. “Your son has decided to get married.”

“What?” Freya gasped, rising abruptly from her seat. “Really? Oh my God!”

Her face lit up with unrestrained excitement as she turned toward him, her eyes shining with pure delight.

“You do not know how much I am longing to hear this. Tell me now who is the lucky girl.”

Markrum flashed his mother a playful smile and rose from his seat.

“A girl from the graveyard,” he said lightly. “I heard she died in 1990. And somehow she stole my heart.”

The moment he turned away after finishing his sentence, Freya’s smile vanished.

Irritation flared across her face.

She snatched a small cushion from the sofa and hurled it at him. “ I am sick of your ridiculous jokes!” She snapped. “You are no longer a teenager, do you hear me? It is time you found a woman to marry or allow me to choose someone suitable for you.”

“I am not old either,” Markrum said lazily as he walked toward the dining area. “Besides you already have a daughter-in-law in this house. As a mere spectator, I have seen how beautifully that marriage is progressing.”

Freya rose at once, irritation tightening her expression as she followed him.

“Do not compare that wretched woman to any other woman in this world,” she said sharply.

“Your wife will be someone who understands how this family runs. And this time I will not let your father interfere in your marriage.”

Markrum poured himself a glass of water, taking an unhurried sip before replying, “Then why not ask Jamie to divorce her, if she is such a burden?”

Freya let out a cold laugh. “You know very well why. Your father is the only reason she is still breathing under this roof. Otherwise, Jamie would have thrown her out long ago.”

“Is that so?” Markrum turned slowly to face her, one brow lifting in doubt.

“Why are you looking at me like this?” Freya frowned.

“You know that’s not the truth,” Markrum said quietly. “It may please you to believe it, but deep down, you know you have never truly understood him.”

He exhaled and turned to leave.

Freya’s lips curved firmly. “ Jamie has always been complicated,” she replied coolly. “But he cannot hide everything from me.” A glint of satisfaction flickered in her eyes. “Not even his decision to cheat on Edith.”

Markrum stopped mid-step. Then he turned around slowly.

Freya met his gaze without flinching. “He is at a hotel right now with another woman. And Edith went there to see it for herself.” She gave a delicate shrug. “Nothing is more satisfying than letting someone witness their own ruin.”

Her smile broadened.

“I have been walking on the edge of a knife, trying to remove her from this family. But couldn’t.” She leaned back slightly, pleased with herself. “ I think I will sleep very well tonight.”

Silence thickened between them.

Markrum’s expression darkened.

“Where is she?” Something shifted in Markrum’s voice, he no longer sounded leisurely.

“Why do you care?” Freya sniggered.

Markrum took a slow step toward her, his expression unreadable. “ Instead of questioning me,” he said evenly, “Answer me.”

And for the first time, Freya felt the slightest flickering of unease.

“I do not know where she is, or what she is doing,” Freya snapped. “ And I have no interest in finding out.” Her voice carried open disdain.

Markrum’s hand curled into a fist.

Without another word he turned sharply and sprinted toward the door, leaving Freya standing there in stunned confusion.

She hurried after him, her heels tracking harshly against the marble floor. “Markrum, where are you going?” She shouted. “I said stop, Markrum.”

Her voice was loud enough to resonate throughout the house, but it was not commanding enough to stop Markrum from leaving.

She stopped at the door, her chest rising and falling with anger. She did not want her son to ruin anything tonight because tomorrow she wished to see that wretched girl disappear from her life forever.

Back in a bar, Edith sat in a corner alone as the blaring music deafened her thoughts. She wanted to drown her sorrow in some way, but she did not know how to. At the time, a man arrived and knocked on the table with drinks. “Are you alone?” He asked, leaning forward to Edith.

Edith looked up with lost eyes.

★★★★"You don't like staying at home with everyone," Elena asked, turning her head toward Markrum.Markrum smiled at her, and replied, "No."Elena blushed slightly. She did not know why whenever she looked at Markrum, her heart began to race. She had met many men, yet never felt this way for anyone, nor had she ever seen someone so purely handsome."I was not like my elder brother- the good child- so I never got much attention at home. I guess that's why I got used to staying out," Markrum added, leaning on the cupboard leisurely. "Why don't you sit on the bed? There aren't many other options?""You can sit on the bed too instead of standing there. There is plenty of space," Elena said directly without much thought as she sat down in a corner."I know you didn't mean anything by it, but if I sit on the bed too and someone walks in, they might think something else. Neither of us wants it, do we?" The smile on Markrum's face deepened as he stared at the girl with pleasing eyes. Such a m

★★★☆"It will be a waste of time if she is in the audition room," Susan said, flipping the pages of the book. "You have never been worried this much about your mom before- so what's different today? It's not like this is the first time she is out this late because of work.""I don't know," Peter replied. "I know I am probably overthinking. But I really feel like something isn't right.""It's okay. This place, and you're new, that's why you are feeling like this. Don't worry she will come home safe. Let's wait a little longer, and if she still doesn't return, I will call her," Susan said turning her head toward the figure as she closed the book, a small smile playing on her lips."Okay, Aunt. How about we go out for a bit - take a walk? It might help me get my mind off mom, and we can explore the place too," Peter suggested gently, not showing too much desperation... otherwise his request might get rejected again. ★★★★" I have no interest in listening to nonsense and there is nothing wrong with me. Just follow me," Jamie spoke in a cold voice, his face tight with irritation, anger barely contained. Without another word, he turned and walked into the room. The doctor glanced at Jason who met his gaze for a brief second, and then the two of them followed Jamie inside. As soon as the doctor's gaze fell on the woman lying on the bed, he was momentarily stunned. His eyes shifted instinctively to Jamie but the question on his lips never quite made it out.Sensing the gaze on him, Jamie shifted his eyes toward the doctor and said quietly, "Don't say anything, just check her. I think she has a fever.""Hmmm," the doctor nodded and went to the bed. Earlier Jamie pulled a sheet over Edith's body, covering her up. So the state of her pants remains hidden. The doctor extended his hand and touched Edith's forehead. The heat beneath his palm made him frown. He glanced at Jamie, and said, "Yes, she has a fev

★★ "Yes I was there... but why do you ask?" Martha asked a faint trace of confusion threading through her voice "It's nothing important," he said lightly, " I just happened to notice a couple of pieces of clothing there, looked like trousers. So I teased my brother about you. He refused to say a word," a faint chuckle followed. "Just in jest, nothing serious. By the way, both of you did surprise us with the early engagement date. Jamie, in particular, seems quite pleased.” Although it should have been a moment for Martha to feel happy- and even a little proud of herself. But there was only one thought running through her mind: trousers She had to ask, "Wait a second. Did you mention the trousers? "Yes, I did!" Markrum replied. " I wasn't wearing any trousers when I went to the office. So whose pieces of trousers did you find?" Martha asked anxiously, the thought clearly unsettling. "Oh!" Markrum sounded surprised too, "Maybe I was mistaken, I might have seen it wrong. Anyway let

★★★★"Me? Even Mom will be here shortly. What I don't understand is- what was the need to hide it from us in the first place?" Markrum asked, resting his body on the seat."What now?" Jamie asked in a strained, impatient tone, clearly he was in no mood to hear anything. "Why can't family matters stay in the house?" He closed the laptop."Whoa, what's going on with you? It looks like something seriously got you worked up," Markrum said, his eyes moved to the exposed door."Nothing. If you don't have anything important, I would prefer to talk later. I am a bit busy with work right now," Jamie said. His eyes were cold and controlled. He was Furious because Markrum was meeting Edith in secret and even calling her behind his back.'What was the need for all this?' Jamie's mind kept circling the thought, and with it, his fingers slowly tightened into a clenched fist."Martha has called the media and said that you are two getting engaged this week, and Mom has no idea about it. Is it true, o

★★★ He stared at her for a second with fury flashing in his gaze, then he picked up his phone and pressed it to his ear. "Jason, arrange a pair of trousers immediately. As fast as possible, if it can be done in seconds, even better." "Trouser? Boss, I am not sure I follow, what kind of trousers do you want me to arrange?" Jason replied. "Just get a damn pair of women's trousers. I am not explaining this any further," Jamie barked into the phone before cutting the call, his temper flaring as he tossed the phone down onto the table with a thud. Edith retreated from the desk, her movement stiff, and sank into the chair she had shoved back moments ago. There was an overwhelming silence in the room. It only dragged Edith's thoughts back to that sudden uninvited kiss. A part of her wanted to speak, demand answers, to warn him that he had crossed a line he never should have. But instinct held her. Suddenly her phone rang. Her gaze shifted toward the sound, and that's when she noticed h
