Bella Hale

I didn’t know my husband was cheating on me until the night he celebrated five years of fooling me.

Five years.

That was how long I had loved Marcus Hale. How long I had defended him, trusted him, and convinced myself that no matter what happened, I had chosen the right man.

And tonight, surrounded by hundreds of people who believed we were the perfect couple, I was about to discover just how wrong I had been.

“Mrs. Hale, a little closer to your husband, please!”

I smiled for the camera and moved closer to Marcus. His arm settled around my waist, warm and familiar, pulling me against his side the way he always did in public.

The camera flashed.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

“Beautiful. Just like that.”

I kept smiling. Marcus did too.

To everyone watching, we looked perfect. The devoted husband. The elegant wife. The beautiful couple celebrating five years of marriage.

I almost believed it myself.

Almost.

“Five years already,” the man standing beside us said with a laugh. “Marcus, you’re a lucky man.”

Marcus gave that modest smile he used so well.

“I am.”

The words should have warmed me. Instead, I felt a quiet tightness in my chest when his eyes drifted past me toward the entrance.

He was looking for someone.

I followed his gaze, but there was nothing unusual—just more guests arriving under the soft golden lights.

When he looked back at me, the smile was already back in place.

“You okay?” I whispered.

“Of course.”

The answer came too quickly.

My stomach gave a small, uneasy twist.

Marcus had always been good at hiding things. He had the kind of effortless charm that made people trust him without thinking twice. Even when he lied, he looked completely sincere.

But lately something had changed.

For weeks he had been distant. He slept later. Took calls behind closed doors. Came home long after midnight with vague excuses about work.

Whenever I asked if something was wrong, he would kiss my forehead and tell me I was overthinking.

So I had stopped asking.

Maybe that was why I didn’t question him when his phone vibrated for the third time that evening.

His hand went into his pocket. He glanced at the screen.

Something flickered across his face—too fast for me to name—before he stepped away.

“I need to take this.”

I watched him walk toward the far end of the ballroom. My fingers tightened slightly around the stem of my glass.

“Marcus.”

He stopped, but he didn’t turn fully.

“Who is it?”

“Work.”

Another lie.

I felt it settle cold and heavy in my stomach.

I didn’t know why the certainty hit me so strongly. Maybe it was the way he refused to meet my eyes. Maybe it was the way he turned his back before answering the call. Or maybe it was simply the quiet voice I had been silencing for weeks.

I forced myself to look away.

Tonight was our anniversary.

I wasn’t going to ruin it by becoming suspicious over nothing.

A waiter passed. I took a glass of champagne just to give my hands something to do.

The glass felt too cold against my palm.

“Bella!”

I turned.

Natalie hurried toward me through the crowd, her expression unusually serious.

The moment I saw her face, something in my chest tightened.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

She glanced toward where Marcus had disappeared, then lowered her voice.

“I need to talk to you.”

My pulse gave a single hard beat.

“What happened?”

“Not here.”

She took my arm and pulled me toward the quieter side of the ballroom.

I followed, the soft music and laughter suddenly feeling far away.

Once we were far enough from the guests, she reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.

“I was scrolling through the auction listings earlier,” she said. “There’s something you need to see.”

She turned the screen toward me.

At first I didn’t understand what I was looking at.

Then I saw the necklace.

My breath caught so sharply it almost hurt.

I knew that necklace.

The delicate diamond chain with the emerald pendant had belonged to my mother.

I had watched her wear it countless times when I was a child.

After she died, it became one of the few things I had left of her.

I kept it locked away.

Protected.

Untouched.

My fingers tightened hard around the champagne glass.

“Where did you get this?”

Natalie swallowed.

“It’s listed for auction.”

“No.”

The word came out too fast, too thin.

“Bella—”

“No.”

I shook my head, already rejecting it.

“That can’t be right.”

“There are several pieces.”

She swiped.

Another photograph appeared.

Then another.

My mother’s bracelet.

Her diamond earrings.

The ring my father had given her on their twentieth anniversary.

All of them.

All listed for sale.

My heart began pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat.

“But these are mine.”

Natalie said nothing.

The silence felt heavy.

“Where did they get them?” I asked.

“That’s what I couldn’t figure out.”

My mouth went dry.

There was only one person who could have accessed those pieces without my permission.

Marcus.

The thought landed like a cold hand around my lungs.

I shook my head immediately.

“No. Marcus wouldn’t.”

Natalie looked at me carefully.

“Are you sure?”

I didn’t answer.

Every strange thing from the past few weeks rushed back at once—the locked study, the missing keys, the late nights, the unfamiliar cologne.

I had dismissed all of it because I trusted him.

Because I loved him.

Because the idea that he could hurt me like this still felt impossible.

My pulse raced.

A sick heat spread under my skin.

What if I was wrong?

What if there was a simple explanation and I was about to embarrass myself on our anniversary?

I could already hear his patient voice telling me I was overthinking again.

I almost turned back.

But the image of my mother’s necklace in an auction listing wouldn’t leave me.

The thought of strangers bidding on the last pieces of her made my stomach twist.

“I need to talk to him.”

“Bella—”

“I’ll be right back.”

I set the champagne glass down with unsteady fingers and walked away.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

My heart thudded in my ears.

Part of me still wanted a perfect explanation.

Part of me was already terrified of what I might find.

I told myself I was only going to ask.

I searched the ballroom.

Marcus was nowhere in sight.

The golden lights felt too bright; the laughter around me sounded distant.

My chest tightened as I headed toward the quieter hallway that led to the private dressing rooms.

The music faded behind me.

My heels sounded too loud on the marble.

I kept telling myself there had to be a reason.

Marcus would never—

Then I heard it.

A woman’s soft laughter.

I stopped.

The door was slightly open.

Light spilled into the hallway.

I knew that laugh.

Claire.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

I should have turned around.

Instead, I stayed rooted in place, something cold settling in my stomach as I moved closer without a sound.

Marcus’s voice drifted out, low and amused.

“She’s still out there smiling for the cameras like a good little wife.”

Claire laughed.

“Does she really believe everything you tell her?”

“Of course she does.”

His tone was lazy, almost bored.

“Bella has always been easy. Soft. Desperate to be loved. All I ever had to do was look at her a certain way and she’d swallow whatever I said.”

My breath caught.

I pressed my hand to the wall.

“Do you know how exhausting it is,” he continued, “pretending to care about her feelings for five years? Listening to her talk about ‘us’ and ‘our future’ like any of it mattered?”

He let out a short, contemptuous breath.

“She still thinks I married her because I loved her.”

Claire giggled.

“And you didn’t?”

Marcus laughed.

The sound was cold.

“Love her? Please. She’s convenient. That’s all she’s ever been. The inheritance, the company shares, the properties her parents left behind—that was the only reason I put a ring on her finger. The rest was just patience.”

My vision blurred.

I bit down hard on the inside of my cheek.

“She’s pathetic, if I’m being honest,” he went on, voice dripping with quiet disgust. “Clinging to every scrap of attention I throw her. Waiting up for me like a loyal dog. It’s almost embarrassing.”

Claire’s voice turned pleased.

“So the jewelry…?”

“She’s never going to notice until it’s too late. By then everything important will already be under my control. And even if she figures it out…”

He paused, almost shrugging.

“What’s she going to do? Cry? She signed the prenup like a good girl. She has nothing without me.”

My knees felt weak.

I leaned harder against the wall, my heartbeat so loud I was terrified they would hear it.

Then I heard the soft, deliberate sound of their kiss.

I stood frozen outside the door, one hand pressed to my mouth, tears slipping silently down my face.

Inside that room, my husband was kissing another woman on the night the world believed we were celebrating five years of love.

And for the first time, the truth settled over me with brutal clarity.

I had never been his wife.

I had only ever been the easiest way for him to steal everything my parents left behind.
