A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE - MY PERVERTED DOCTOR

RICARDO‘S POV

If I could imagine the twist that would turn my life, maybe I would have thought twice before deciding to go back to Brazil. After living for eight years in Canada, the geographical and cultural differences became evident as Soon as I set foot at Rio de Janeiro airport. I didn't expect anyone to show up for me, but to my surprise, she was there: Alice, my beloved little sister. The only thing I thought about, throughout the flight, was hugging her and saying everything would be okay. But I knew you wouldn't. The cancer that had anathetised in Dad's liver had returned. I was a doctor and I knew exactly what that meant. The risk of metastasis was high and I needed to take charge of the Hospital MK Pain. Director Carlos Marcondes could no longer realize his greatest dream. The disease was taking away his greatest pleasure: walking the corridors of his enterprise.

As the eldest son, doctor and administrator, I would take charge of the family business. That's why I abandoned everything I'd built in Canada. All so that my father could treat himself correctly and go through this moment alongside his wife and children.

― I can't believe you're here — Alice threw herself into my lap and cried softly, her face buried in my neck. My sister was torn apart by Dad's worsening.

― It's going to be all right, little princess! I'm going to take care of you —my heart was warm to see you like this, and I only noticed that someone was watching us when I heard a phlegm behind me. I turned around, with Alice still in my lap, and i was startled by the female figure who watched me with damp, bright eyes.

― Do I know you? " I asked when Alice left me. The round face and long blond hair were familiar.

― Don't you remember me anymore, Rich Ric?

― Manuela Toothless? Are you kidding me? — something rolled over my belly when little Manuela's green eyes stared at me. As a little girl, there was nothing left. Manu had turned into a beautiful woman. The well-designed waist and wide hips had nothing to do with the slender girl eight years ago.

― It won't give me a hug either — nor did I have time to answer, for Manu had already tangled around my neck. I reciprocate the hug, feeling a little uncomfortable with the demonstration of such warm affection. At that moment I didn't know what to think about Manuela Toothless, so I just turned my gaze to my little sister as soon as she let me go.

― So you two are still friends?

― Best friends forever. We studied the same course in college — Alice added, hugging her friend by the neck.

― Is Manu also doing medicine? What the other way is that? Some kind of local virus? Did you all decide to become doctors?

― Question of strategy, Rich! I already have a guaranteed job at Dr. Marcondes' hospital. He assured me of that — the blonde misplaced.

The mere mention of Dad's name reminded me why i was there. I felt my heart squeezing when I saw Alice's sad look and tried to change the subject.

― Then tell me what has changed in this city while I was away.

— Apart from the violence, which only increased, Rio remains beautiful — Alice clarified as we headed for the exit.

― How about taking a beach tomorrow, Rich Boy? ― Manu suggested.

― Stop calling me Rich or I'll change your nickname to snot.

― Ew, all right, Ric, rich man!

I don't know if I was imagining things, but the malice in Manu's voice made me feel very strange, especially when I noticed she was looking at me from the top. Was that girl teasing me? Nonsense! Manuela Banguela was my sister's best friend and still a child. Get those thoughts out of your head, Ricardo! The reason for his coming to Brazil is another.

We went to the airport parking lot and Alice pulled me over until we stopped in front of a lowered black Monza. My eyes widened when Manu opened the driver's door and got into the car.

― You're kidding that you're going to drive without a license! ― my voice came out higher than normal.

― I have a wallet, Ric! ― she snored and rolled her eyes.

― What do you mean? You have what? 13, 15 years?

― Ridiculous!

― Don't you know how to do more accounts, don't you? Manu is 21, almost 22. You forgot we're the same age. ― Alice added, opening the hitchhiker's door.

― What do you mean? My little sister turned 21 and i wasn't told?

― Stop being a clown and get in, Ricardo! — that's what Manu called me when I got angry. When I was a kid, I used to love picking on her just to hear her call me by name, like a normal person. Rich Ric was shameful, especially in front of the girls who, at the time, I took at family parties.

― What about this car? Where did you get it? — I asked after pushing Alice into the back seat, where the children were supposed to walk, and sitting next to the driver.

―Don't you dree to speak ill of him, for he is my son.

― Manu has a passion for this car. It does not sell and does not trade even for a BMW — my sister justified, sticking in the middle of the seats. He was even stylish. The leather seats and the care with the cleaning made me realize that Manu was no longer that little girl who collected dolls and stickers.

― I liked him. It's got your face on it. I just don't want to imagine what you're doing in here — I debauched, but I regretted it next when I imagined the scene of Manu being grabbed by that bench.

― Don't worry. No man has ever been in my car before. You're the first one — she revealed, making me feel a strange relief in my chest.

― But why a Monza? ― I tried to lighten the strange mood that was left after my stupid comment.

― That's what you got to buy with my first payment, that's why it's so important to me. I'm a writer, by the way — she blinked.

― What do you mean? Do you write books? What kind of books?

― You sure don't want to know! ― Alice got in the way.

― College books are very expensive. A lot for my father to take on on his own. And you can't study medicine and work eight hours a day. So I write to earn my own money.

― But what do you write? Romance? Fantasy? Don't tell me it's terror?

― One hour I show you — the smile in the corner of her mouth remained on Manu's face as she drove. Something told me something those girls were up to.

Manu left us outside the house and said goodbye. He said he needed to study and would call later to set up the beach. It was Saturday and probably that would be the first and last quiet weekend i would have in Brazil. I was sure that as soon as I took over the hospital, my free time would be greatly reduced, so I accepted the invitation. I really missed that place, the beaches and all the joy that emanated on the sunny days of the Summer of Rio. But mostly, I miss surfing, my great passion.

When I came into the house, I was greeted with affection by Violet, a family maid and almost a mother to me.

― My boy, how did you grow up? — the woman's bare voice caught me in full.

― I've missed you too, Violet. Where's Dad?

― In the bedroom. You're very weak today. Your arrival will do him a lot of good.

Violet's words made me apprehensive. As much as I followed the evolution of the picture, I didn't know what the reunion with my father would be like. I wish I'd come back sooner, but I couldn't leave the students without a substitute teacher. I had just started my master's degree in hospital leadership and had taken up the position of teacher at a renowned school in Canada. It was the perfect opportunity for the start of a promising career, but my family needed me at that moment.

When I went into the room, my father slept peacefully. His face was even more destiture since the last video call we made. I greeted the nurse and asked him how he was doing. I looked at the medical reports and checked the dosages for the meds. There was nothing left to do but ease the pain and wait for the chemotherapy to take effect. As much as the profession prepared me for moments like that, it wasn't easy when it happened to your own blood. The pain I felt at that moment was profound, and even greater to know that Alice is the one who would suffer the most if something happened. My little girl grew up surrounded by my father's protection, my mother's pampering, and the immense love of a brother who adored her. My father's death would be the breach of that family security, and I didn't know if Alice was prepared for it.

― He's going to get over that, too, isn't he? — the question arose behind me and caused me to awaken to her presence in the room.

― Let's trust. Where's Mommy? — I asked trying to alleviate my concerns.

― He is in the church. He went to thank you for your arrival.

Alice hugged me and I stroked her hair, kissing the top of her head. I knew the clock was running against us, but I'd do anything to make sure we had some time still with him.
