The school is in a buzz, there’s more chatter than there usually is. You can literally feel the energy on campus, people are budding with excitement.
“Do you know what’s going on?” I ask Ella, turning to face her. She shakes her head silently chewing her cinnamon sticks.
“Give me a second” she says, running off leaving me all by myself. I sigh, “I’ve told her several times to stop doing that” I mutter, remaining rooted to the spot knowing she’ll meet me back here in some seconds.
Glancing up I notice her running towards me, “David Carter is having his 35th birthday today” she manages to say in between breaths.
“Here” I say, handing her a bottle of water, “you really should stop running around campus. You’re a grown woman, and grown women walk not run” I scold.
She rolls her eyes, “didn’t you hear what I just said, David Carter is having his 35th birthday today”
“Yeah, there was so much bustling around the house today” Rita says, joining our conversation
Ella crosses her arms, “how could you have such news and not share it with us”. Rita smiles, “you know it’s personal information and I have to keep it private. And besides I don’t work for David, I work for his parents” she says, patting Ella in an attempt to console her.
Ella smiles, “I’ll let you off the hook just this once, the next time this happens I’ll cut you off” she says, playfully.
Rita nods, “thank you so much for forgiving me” she replies, playing along.
“Aren’t you going to say something?” Rita asks, scrutinising my face. Ella nods, “yeah, you’re the one who’s interested in him”
I laugh, “what do you want me to do? I wasn’t invited to the event so I’m sorry Rita and Ella but this piece of information doesn’t help me” I say a bit harshly.
Rita rolls her eyes, “you don’t have to be mean all the time. We get it’s hopeless, but we’re only trying to help” she says, linking her hands through mine and that of Ella.
I smile, shaking my head, “I’m sorry for taking my anger on you both. I’m sorry, I just feel a bit frustrated, things have been a bit hectic at home”
“Let’s head to class” I say, breaking away from the group and walking ahead of them. “Wait up!” Rita and Ella call out running behind me until they meet up with me.
On our way to class, I notice Rita constantly staring at me. I try to ignore it, but that’s hard to do when someone is constantly looking at you every 30 seconds.
“Can I talk to you in private Rita?” I ask as we arrive in front of the lecture room, looking solely at her. She nods, “sure. Please keep our seats Ella”
Ella looks at both of us before walking into the class. I’m sure she’ll be asking one of us what we talked about as she can’t help but be inquisitive, especially when it comes to her friends.
“You know she hates it when she’s excluded” Rita says. I shrug, “I know, but I really had to clarify something. Let’s take a walk”
“What did you want to talk about?” Rita asks, as we walk further away from the classroom. We have about 20 minutes before the lecturer arrives, so that’s enough time to figure out why she’s acting weird.
“I caught you staring at me on our walk to class. Is something the matter? Is there something that you’d like to tell me? Because it is really unlike you to continuously stare” I say, getting straight to the point.
She smiles, “oh you did. I guess I’m not the best at being subtle” she shrugs. “So is there something that you need to tell me?” I ask, looking at her, hoping she’d tell me the truth.
She shrugs, “yeah, there’s something I want to tell you. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime but I need you to promise you won’t tell anyone about it”
I nod, “I won’t”, “and promise you won’t tell anyone that I was the one who gave you this piece of information” she says.
I nod, “I won’t”. The secrecy that’s involved is beginning to make me really curious about what she has to say and its level of importance.
She sighs, “Alana and Carry Carter want David to get married”. I shrug, “so, that’s a normal parent's wish. It’d be weird if they didn’t”
She nods, “let me finish. I overheard them talking in the study and they want David to get married in two months time and for his wife to be pregnant in a month after their marriage before they handover the business to him. But the thing is I don’t think David has a girlfriend”
I nod, taking in all she just said. She’s right, David doesn’t have a girlfriend, I know this because I have been closely watching him. He has been so busy with work that he has very little social life.
“Wait does that mean…” I say, looking into her eyes for confirmation. She nods, “probably, if he accepts, but his parents would know nothing about it”
“That means it’s probably going to be a contract marriage” I say in excitement, pulling Rita into a hug, “thank you so much for telling me this, you don’t know what you just did for me and my family” I say, releasing her from my embrace.
She smiles, “I can guess as much, hope this helps and you’re able to do something with this piece of information”
I nod, “it does” I say, smiling from ear to ear. I know I’m breaking my number one rule of never hoping too much without sufficient evidence that it’d be successful, but I can’t help but be happy. I have waited for this opportunity for so long and I’m not going to let it slip out of my hands.
“Come on let’s get to class” I say, linking my hands with Rita as we walk back to class. She chuckles, “you should probably stop smiling so much, people will wonder why frowning Lena is smiling today”
“It will probably shock people but I can’t help but smile” I say, still smiling. She shakes her head, “at least reduce the smile by a tone or two, even I am getting scared” she says, laughing.
I chuckle, “once I return to class, I’ll return my facial expression to the usual dull look I carry around campus.”
Rita chuckles, “that’s good, keep it up” she says, laughing.
We walk into the classroom hand in hand, “thanks for saving us a seat” I say, taking a seat beside Ella.
She smiles, “you both totally owe me and I want to know every detail of what you the conversation was about”.
I smile, “I’ll save you a seat at the train until we graduate from college, but for the latter I can’t disclose that piece of information”
She pouts, “you already do that. It’s not fair”. “I’ll buy you ice cream” Rita chimes in which causes a nod of approval from Ella, “I guess I’ll let this go but only this once” she says, eyeing me.
I smile, “thank you, I’ll try to tell you everything else concerning my life”. She laughs, “not everything, just the juicy parts.”
David POV“We are heading to my parents place” I say to the chauffeur before signalling to him to wind the glass up, creating a private space for me as we head to my parents place, one of the many perks of owning a limousine. My phone buzzes, my assistant Raymond reminding me that today is my day off. He must think I have dementia because this is the fourth time he has reminded me in the span of two days to not come to work. Some can even classify it has a subtle warning, but he’s the only one I’d accept that from, seeing how far we have come together. The glass rolls down, Edward peeking behind the wheel, a rigid smile on his face as he faces me, “we have arrived at your parents home”.I nod, “thank you Edward” I say, stepping down from the car as he holds out the door for me. “You don’t need to wait for me, I’ll see you later this evening at the event” I say, walking towards the door, without waiting for a response.“Good morning Sir” the maid says, smiling from ear to ear, “happy b
David’s POV“Hi David” an unfamiliar voice says, my eyes scan her face for any sign of recognition, but nothing comes to mind.“I’m Daniella” she says, her hands obstructing my view as she pushes her hand out in the hope of a handshake. “David” mom calls out, waving me over, “come here, there’s someone we want to introduce you to”.I smile, grateful for the interruption, “please excuse me, I’m needed elsewhere” I say, leaving her hand hanging in the air as I walk away from her.“Is something the matter?” I ask, joining the group. Asides my parents, I notice two ladies, one who looks to be in her late 20's, her face ringing a bell though I can’t place where I know her from and the other in her early 50’s.“Hello” I say, exchanging handshakes with them, acting like the gentleman I was brought to be. “I feel like I know you, is there a chance that we’ve met before?” I ask, my eyes pinned on the lady in her late 20’s. Mom chuckles, “Don’t tell me you don’t recognize her?”. I smile, turn
Lena’s POVMy eyes are fixed on the gate of “The Manor” the estate owned by David, as I nervously chew my lips awaiting the return of David.Though I’ve meticulously thought out my plan on addressing him I can’t help but feel nervous at the reception I’ll receive. Anyone would feel nervous in my shoes but I have no other choice but to take this opportunity. If I miss my chance now, I may never get an opportunity to approach him.The black limousine drives towards the gate and like a person possessed I run towards the gate, my hair flying in all directions. In a state of panic I stand in between the car and the gate and in that moment I realise that my thought out plan is not as thought out as I’d like it to be.For starters I’d like to look presentable in front of Him, not that I’d like him to take an interest in me but he should at least think that I’m sane. The glass rolls down and David’s face is revealed, a look of anger and disgust is etched in his face as he looks at the thing
“I want to get married to you” I blurt out, his eyes widen and his lips curl up into a smile not a usual smile but a mocking smile, “you… want to get married to… me” he chuckles.I nod, ignoring the queasy feeling in my stomach, “I want to get married to you but it’s not in the sense you’re thinking. I’m proposing a marriage of convenience” I say, nervously biting my lips.“A contract marriage?” He says, I nod, “yes, a contract marriage between the two of us”. He smiles, “I understand what you’re trying to say, but why do you think I need to get into a contract marriage and if I did, why will it be with you?” He asks.“Well, I know that your parents want you to get married in the span of two months. I also know you’re not dating anyone, please don’t ask me how I know, I just know. I also know that you need to get married to inherit your parents business and you need to give your parents a grandchild in the span of a month of your marriage. How I know is left to my discretion” I smile,
David’s POVThe evening of David’s Birthday “Why would my parents do such a thing?” I think to myself on the ride home. “They know I have no interest in marriage or love. I just want to get to the top of my career and get to my rightful position, the position I was trained for. But now they tell me that I need to be married and have a child before I can be considered for that position”A part of me feels angry and the other part feels understanding; I can’t help but be rational after all I was trained to be rational. A business man is always rational.I know the real reason why my parents took this route, and it was definitely not because of pressure from shareholders. They had pressured me to try dating some time back, they continuously compared me to my brother who’s married with two kids; two kids that I love so much, but I’ve never thought much of having a family of my own.And I guess they noticed that because they resorted to this. In their defence if they didn’t do this, I mig
Lena’s POVMy eyes flash to my phone screen, the name David Rome appearing on the screen. Without thinking too much, I pick the call. “Hello” I say, suppressing a smile, still feeling excited at the decision we reached yesterday.Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’ll be marrying David Rome of the Rome family, yes I closely watched him but I never thought it’d really happen.I know it’s not a love marriage, but that’s what make me even happier. I didn’t have to deceive him into falling in love with me, though I doubt I can and he knows my conditions and I know his, conditions that I don’t mind fulfilling.“Good morning” he replies, his deep voice resounding from the other line, “we need to meet up at the marriage office today, to get our marriage registered”“Today?” I ask, completely shocked. I knew we were going to get married, I just didn’t know it’d be this quick. I was expecting family introductions, then a wedding being planned.“You don’t want to?” He asks, his voice sound
I spent the entire time at school thinking about how to bring up the subject of my marriage to my parents. Different ideas have come to mind but the end results aren’t too good. I’ve even imagined my mother slapping me right across the face though she’s never raised a hand to me but I’m pretty sure this is good enough reason to get slapped.“I’m home” I sigh, pushing the large door at the entrance as I walk into the dimly lit sitting room. “How are you honey” mom says, a smile lighting up her face at the sight of me.I force a smile, “I’m good, there’s something I need to tell you guys” I say, taking a seat opposite her. She looks at me inquisitively like she’s going to prod further, but she looks away and calls for the rest of the family.“What’s wrong” dad says, walking into the sitting room, “yeah I was just about to get some sleep” Daniel says, rubbing his eyes.I stop myself from rolling my eyes, seeing that I need all the support that I can get. My sisters Carla and Dora walk
Mom looks at me, tears streaming down her eyes as she walks away from me, my siblings rush to her side as they all take turns looking at the certificate.“Are you joking Lena?” Daniel asks, his voice booming. I look him in the eyes, “I’m married now Daniel and you all will just have to accept that” I retort, my eyes softening as I look at my dad who’s busy comforting my mum.“I’m sure there must be a reason behind this, Lena won’t just do this” I hear dad say to her. Mum wipes her teary eyes, “why did you do this? Did you not think we’ll support you in your choice? Were you planning on eloping and had some pity after giving it a thought”“Mom…” I manage to say, before being cut off by the doorbell. “I’ll get that” I say, dashing to the door, giving me an opportunity to leave the stressful environment I just created.“Sorry we aren’t not in the position to have visitors, please come another time” I say as I open the door.“I guess the big reveal didn’t go as planned,” David says. I loo
