Chapter 2

作者: Little Squirrel
I stepped into the bedroom.

The closet was full of dresses Ethan had bought for me.

However, they were all the same: white dresses, just like the ones Winter used to wear.

I yanked one off the hanger — it was a birthday present Ethan had thrown at me last year.

He had said, "Wear this. Winter's got anemia, so go donate blood to her."

I spent three hours in that dress at the hospital, donating 400cc of blood, and all he said was, "You're kind of useful, I guess."

I grabbed the scissors and cut into the dress with all my might.

"Rip—"

One after another, they all got the same treatment.

I was like a robot that never tired, wildly tearing apart everything in sight.

All the "presents" I had once thought were treasures were now just torn fabric on the floor.

The livestream started up again.

Viewers zoomed up to a hundred thousand.

[Did something upset the host? Why cut up such nice clothes?]

[This is so satisfying to watch! Gifts from a jerk like that should be torched!]

[Hey, that's all money! Why not send it to me instead?]

I kept snipping away and flashed a smile at the camera.

"Money? To me, these things might as well be burial wraps."

Right when I was really getting into the cutting, the door was kicked open with a bang.

Ethan stormed in, emanating a cold aura.

He saw the mess everywhere, and his expression turned super dark.

"Nina! What are you going crazy over now?"

I stopped and looked at him, scissors in hand.

"I'm just cleaning up garbage, Mr. Larsen. Can't you tell?"

The scissors reflected some of the light, causing him to blink.

He stepped back without thinking, then grew even angrier.

"Put those scissors down!

"You think that wrecking this stuff will make me notice you? Nina, you're playing games, and you're not good at them!"

I tossed the scissors away.

They hit the floor with a loud "clang" right by his foot.

Ethan was used to weapons, so he did not flinch, but my act of throwing the scissors was akin to throwing down a challenge, and it made him look even angrier.

"When will you stop this nonsense? Winter's sick and needs peace and quiet. How can she stay with the house looking like this?"

Oh, so he was in a rush to clear the space for the new person.

I dusted off my hands and pointed to the mess. "Don't worry, I'll clean it up. I think it's gross here too."

Ethan squinted at me, trying to figure me out. "What do you really want? If it's money, just tell me. If you apologize to Winter and treat her well, I'll give you a credit card with no limit."

It was the same old game.

Harsh words, then a sweet promise.

I used to give in and receive these little "treats," but not anymore.

"Ethan, do you think I'm broke?"

Ethan snorted.

"Not broke? What about your dad who loves to gamble, and your mom in the hospital? They both need money. Without the Larsen family, you wouldn't even have enough to eat!"

When he talked about my mom, it hurt a lot.

Yeah, she was still in the hospital.

That was why I had been too scared to leave him.

However, the system was now about to get rid of me.

If I was gone, who would look after my mom?

Right on time, the system reminded me.

[Complete your daily live broadcast task, and you can make a wish come true after you're gone.]

With that, the last of my worries was gone.

A wish? I would wish for my mom to get better.

I gave Ethan a smile.

"Really?"

"Let's see who really needs who, you or me, the mafia Don."

Ethan was so mad he balled up his fists, but he did not swing them.

He just waved his hand, and his guys cut off my card.

"We'll see how tough you are now!"

Ethan lost his mind.He gave up his role as the mafia Don to someone else, chosen by a family elder. Then, he roamed the big, empty house, holding onto my ashes. He changed the house back to how it was when I first came.Every piece of furniture, every little decoration, just like I remembered. He even learned to cook.He would make a whole table of my favorite foods, enough for two people. He would talk to no one at all."Nina, dinner's ready.”"I put extra butter in the cream soup today. Try it.”"Nina, it snowed today. Are you cold?”"Nina, I miss you so much..."However, no one answered him.The room was filled with silence. Winter had visited once. She came all dressed up, trying to sneak in when he was vulnerable.Ethan had his guys break her legs and toss her onto the street.People say she ended up doing the worst kind of jobs just to get by.She got what she deserved.Ethan was falling apart, too.Drinking too much and never sleeping well made him look old

I was gone. However, I did not leave right away.My spirit hovered in the air, watching everything from above.Ethan was holding me, crying until he fainted. When he woke up, he sent his friends away. He would not eat or drink. He just stayed by my side, not ready to let me go.He kept muttering that I was just sleeping. He said if anyone dared to say I was gone, they would have to join me.Winter tried to see him, but Ethan's followers scared her off with their guns."Go away! You're the reason Nina's gone! I'll make you pay!"The person Ethan once adored was now the one he blamed. What a sad twist. It was not until my body started to change that Ethan had to face the truth. He put me in my favorite red dress, the one I wore when we first met.He whispered, "Nina, you're the most beautiful in red."The funeral was quiet, just Ethan alone with my ashes in the big, empty house. He kept looking at my picture, crying like a child, kissing my face in the photo."Nina, I'll t

The doctor arrived. After examining me, he looked very serious and shook his head."Mr. Larsen, you need to prepare yourself. She's not going to make it. It's amazing she's lasted this long."Ethan grabbed the doctor's shirt."You're wrong! She's just been a little hungry! How can she be dying?"Fix her! Use the best treatments! I'll pay whatever it costs! And if she doesn't get better, I'll hold you responsible!"The doctor was scared, but could only let out a sad sigh."Mr. Larsen, it's not about the money. She's got late-stage stomach cancer, and it's spread everywhere…"She's also been so sad for so long that she doesn't have much fight left in her... not even a miracle can save her now."Late-stage stomach cancer. Those words hit Ethan like a bolt of lightning. He let go of the doctor and stumbled back, falling into a chair."No, that can't be right..."Just days ago, she was out dancing and even scolding me. How could everything change so quickly? "He moved to the e

That night, Ethan was like a monster. He ignored his own injuries or how much I did not want that.He kept demanding, over and over."Say it! You love me!"Promise you'll never leave me!"I bit down on my teeth and stayed quiet…Until I just could not stay awake anymore. When I woke up, it was because I was so hungry.I was in the big bed in the main bedroom of the manor, but I was chained up.Ethan was keeping me prisoner. The door opened, and Winter came in with a tray of food. She looked a little too happy to see me like that."Sis, it's time to eat. Don made sure the kitchen cooked all your favorite things."She put the tray down on the nightstand. There was a piece of stale black bread and a tiny bowl of soup. Was that supposed to be my "favorite" meal?I gave her a frosty stare. "Where's Ethan?"Winter giggled behind her hand."Don's off handling family stuff. He said you should think things over, and when you're ready to see sense, he'll let you out."Come on,

I hung up and went back to my feast without another thought. The chat in the livestream went wild.[Whoa! Ethan was in a car crash? He totally had it coming!][Hope he gets what's coming to him!][Did the streamer have something to do with it?]I saw those messages, wiped my mouth, and gave an icy laugh to the camera."Like I have time for that."He made too many enemies. What goes around comes around."I finished my meal, paid up, and walked out of the restaurant without rushing. The sky was dark and heavy, like it was ready to snow.I pulled my coat tighter and wandered down the street without any real plan.Ethan was in an accident. His fate was up in the air.I should be happy, right? However, I felt so empty inside, like something was missing.I had loved him for seven years.Even a pet kept for seven years evoked feelings of fondness. He was a real, live person. However, I was not going to the hospital. He asked for that.I hit the mall and splurged on all the

  • A Countdown on Camera   Chapter 5

I woke up again in a VIP hospital room.My death countdown was at 27 days. The sharp scent of disinfectant filled the air.I opened my eyes to find Ethan by my bed, peeling an apple. He looked up quickly when he heard me stir.Seeing me awake, his bloodshot eyes lit up with surprise."You're awake? How do you feel? Any discomfort?"He held out the apple to me, his voice softer than ever.I turned my head, ignoring the apple."Why are you here? What about Winter? Did she die?"Ethan's hand stopped in mid-air.The warmth on his face turned to stone, replaced by a look of resignation."Nina, cut it out. Winter's okay. She even asked the doctor about you. They said you just had a low blood sugar count and were exhausted."Don't do anything like that again. If you need something, just tell me. Stop hurting yourself."Low blood sugar count?Exhausted?I almost burst into laughter.Ethan believed every silly lie, even the ones that were obviously full of holes. To him, the tr
