Chapter 4

作者: Little Squirrel
The next morning, the cold woke me up.

I was curled up on a park bench, newspapers my only blanket.

My phone would not stop buzzing.

Ethan was calling.

The phone rang, and before I could say hello, Ethan's grumpy voice burst through. "Nina, hurry to Metropolitan Medical Center! Winter fainted from not having enough blood. She needs a transfusion. You've got the same rare blood type, Rh-negative.

"You've got thirty minutes. If you're even a minute late, I'm cutting off paying your mom's medical bills!"

The line went dead. I stared at the blank screen and could not help but chuckle.

Same old Ethan. However, I had to keep going. My mom had to outlive me or my wish would not come true.

Dragging myself out the door, I caught a cab to the hospital. Right at the ER doors, Ethan's guys scooped me up and rushed me inside.

"What took you so long?" Ethan snapped. "If Winter gets worse, it's on you!" He massaged his temples as his men shoved me into a chair for the blood draw.

The nurse, with a big needle in hand, looked worriedly at me. "Mr. Larsen, she looks pale. Maybe we should check her first..."

"No checks!" Ethan cut her off. "She's fine. She was out dancing last night. Just draw the blood, 400cc, now!"

The nurse had no choice but to do as she was told.

As my blood started to flow into the bag, I felt my energy draining away with it. Ethan sat nearby, glued to his phone, too busy to even glance my way.

Once they took enough blood, I was so dizzy I almost fell, but Ethan caught me — only to quickly let go as if I had burned him. "Don't be so weak," he said calmly. "Go get Winter some food, she'll be hungry when she wakes up."

He tossed some money at me and disappeared into Winter's room.

Dollar bills danced in the wind, settling by my shoes.

I scooped up the cash and left the hospital behind.

I did not head for a snack.

Instead, I found myself in the lottery store, trading all the money for scratch-off tickets.

The viewers in the livestream were gobsmacked.

[Hey, what's the host up to? I thought you were getting food?]

[This makes no sense. You just gave blood and now you're buying scratch-off tickets?]

[Is this like, totally giving up or what?]

I just kept scratching and chuckling to myself.

"Food? Nah.

"I'm betting these 15 bucks on hitting it big."

However, all I got was a single dollar.

With that dollar, I bought a bottle of water.

Perched on the hospital's front steps, I took my time sipping it.

Then Ethan called again.

"Nina! Where's the food?

"Winter's awake and starving! Where'd you run off to?"

I twisted the cap back on and replied calmly, phone in hand, "Ethan, I don't owe you a thing. I gave blood already. Get your own food and don't bother me with this stuff anymore. It's just annoying."

With that, I hung up.

I got to my feet, ready to go, but a fierce pain in my belly stopped me cold. I doubled over, drenched in a cold sweat. The world blurred and spun.

As I teetered on the edge of consciousness, I saw Ethan, flanked by guards, striding out of the hospital.

He froze when he saw me by the flower bed, then hurried over.

"Nina! What's this act now?"

He tried to help me up.

I mustered all my strength to push his hand away.

"Go away..."

Blood spilled from my lips, trickling onto his crisp white shirt.

Ethan's eyes widened in shock.

He stared at the blood on his hands, his eyes wide with shock and his hands shaking uncontrollably.

"Nina... what's wrong, don't scare me..."

I saw the fear in his eyes and could not help but let out a sly grin.

"Ethan…

"This time... I'm really going to die…

"Are you... happy about it..."

With those words, darkness swallowed me whole.

The livestream froze on my blood-stained face.

The chat exploded with messages.

[Ah! Don't fall asleep, streamer!]

[Is that real blood? Props aren't that lifelike, are they?]

[Ethan, you jerk! You're going to regret this!]

Ethan held me as I grew colder.

For the first time, he cried out in agony for me.

"Doctor! Doctor! We need help!"

However, it was too late.

Ethan lost his mind.He gave up his role as the mafia Don to someone else, chosen by a family elder. Then, he roamed the big, empty house, holding onto my ashes. He changed the house back to how it was when I first came.Every piece of furniture, every little decoration, just like I remembered. He even learned to cook.He would make a whole table of my favorite foods, enough for two people. He would talk to no one at all."Nina, dinner's ready.”"I put extra butter in the cream soup today. Try it.”"Nina, it snowed today. Are you cold?”"Nina, I miss you so much..."However, no one answered him.The room was filled with silence. I was gone. However, I did not leave right away.My spirit hovered in the air, watching everything from above.Ethan was holding me, crying until he fainted. When he woke up, he sent his friends away. He would not eat or drink. He just stayed by my side, not ready to let me go.He kept muttering that I was just sleeping. He said if anyone dared to say I was gone, they would have to join me.Winter tried to see him, but Ethan's followers scared her off with their guns."Go away! You're the reason Nina's gone! I'll make you pay!"The person Ethan once adored was now the one he blamed. What a sad twist. It was not until my body started to change that Ethan had to face the truth. He put me in my favorite red dress, the one I wore when we first met.He whispered, "Nina, you're the most beautiful in red."The funeral was quiet, just Ethan alone with my ashes in the big, empty house. He kept looking at my picture, crying like a child, kissing my face in the photo."Nina, I'll t

The doctor arrived. After examining me, he looked very serious and shook his head."Mr. Larsen, you need to prepare yourself. She's not going to make it. It's amazing she's lasted this long."Ethan grabbed the doctor's shirt."You're wrong! She's just been a little hungry! How can she be dying?"Fix her! Use the best treatments! I'll pay whatever it costs! And if she doesn't get better, I'll hold you responsible!"The doctor was scared, but could only let out a sad sigh."Mr. Larsen, it's not about the money. She's got late-stage stomach cancer, and it's spread everywhere…"She's also been so sad for so long that she doesn't have much fight left in her... not even a miracle can save her now."Late-stage stomach cancer. Those words hit Ethan like a bolt of lightning. He let go of the doctor and stumbled back, falling into a chair."No, that can't be right..."Just days ago, she was out dancing and even scolding me. How could everything change so quickly? That night, Ethan was like a monster. He ignored his own injuries or how much I did not want that.He kept demanding, over and over."Say it! Don made sure the kitchen cooked all your favorite things."She put the tray down on the nightstand. There was a piece of stale black bread and a tiny bowl of soup. Was that supposed to be my "favorite" meal?I gave her a frosty stare. "Where's Ethan?"Winter giggled behind her hand."Don's off handling family stuff. He said you should think things over, and when you're ready to see sense, he'll let you out."Come on,

I hung up and went back to my feast without another thought. The chat in the livestream went wild.[Whoa! Ethan was in a car crash? He totally had it coming!][Hope he gets what's coming to him!][Did the streamer have something to do with it?]I saw those messages, wiped my mouth, and gave an icy laugh to the camera."Like I have time for that."He made too many enemies. What goes around comes around."I finished my meal, paid up, and walked out of the restaurant without rushing. The sky was dark and heavy, like it was ready to snow.I pulled my coat tighter and wandered down the street without any real plan.Ethan was in an accident. His fate was up in the air.I should be happy, right? However, I felt so empty inside, like something was missing.I had loved him for seven years.Even a pet kept for seven years evoked feelings of fondness. He was a real, live person. However, I was not going to the hospital. He asked for that.I hit the mall and splurged on all the

I woke up again in a VIP hospital room.My death countdown was at 27 days. The sharp scent of disinfectant filled the air.I opened my eyes to find Ethan by my bed, peeling an apple. He looked up quickly when he heard me stir.Seeing me awake, his bloodshot eyes lit up with surprise."You're awake? How do you feel? Any discomfort?"He held out the apple to me, his voice softer than ever.I turned my head, ignoring the apple."Why are you here? What about Winter? Did she die?"Ethan's hand stopped in mid-air.The warmth on his face turned to stone, replaced by a look of resignation."Nina, cut it out. Winter's okay. She even asked the doctor about you. They said you just had a low blood sugar count and were exhausted."Don't do anything like that again. If you need something, just tell me. Stop hurting yourself."Low blood sugar count?Exhausted?I almost burst into laughter.Ethan believed every silly lie, even the ones that were obviously full of holes. To him, the tr
