Chapter 2

Luca Rowan
The next day, the Blackrock Pack's welcoming convoy filled the entire street to welcome Leah.

Four guards stood on either side of the convoy, the wolf crests on their chests gleaming in the sunlight.

The steward, Colin Stafford, personally draped a white fur coat over Leah's shoulders. "Luna, the Alpha is waiting for you."

The crowd immediately fell silent.

Leah lifted her chin and deliberately walked past me. "Erin, hold up my dress for me."

Her dress spilled across the steps, and the diamond necklace rested against her collarbone, exactly like the one I had worn in my previous life.

"The servants are behind you."

I stepped around her train and walked straight toward Derrick's car.

Behind me, I heard people quietly whispering that I was so jealous that I had lost all sense of decorum.

Leah chuckled softly and explained on my behalf, "Erin isn't in a good mood. Don't blame her."

As the car door closed, I saw her tilt her neck back and let Colin fasten the necklace around it.

That clasp was difficult to undo. I had struggled with it for a long time before I died, but I still couldn't pull it off my neck.

Derrick slammed his hand against the steering wheel. "Had enough? It's too late to regret it now. Leah is already the Luna of the Blackrock Pack. You're not even worthy of holding up her dress."

I fastened my seat belt. "Drive."

Derrick's family only prepared a simple mating ceremony. A dozen or so witnesses, a lunch, and it was over.

We weren't fated mates, and neither of us marked the other.

Throughout the entire ceremony, Derrick only spoke when the witnesses asked him a question. The rest of the time, he kept his head lowered, staring at photos of Leah on his phone.

Kyla was busy entertaining the guests. After the last one left, she took the gift ledger and returned to her room.

A servant carried my luggage into the living room.

"Sir, where should I put Miss Erin's things?"

"The storage room."

The servant hesitated. "There's no heating in there."

Derrick didn't even look up. "She didn't come here to enjoy herself."

He put his phone away and finally looked at me. "You have no right to touch anything that's mine, and don't interfere in my business. Don't let my mother find out what's really going on. Otherwise, stay away from me."

I took the dissolution agreement I had prepared in advance from my bag. "We'll dissolve the contract in three months. For these three months, we stay out of each other's affairs. Our separate property remains our own."

Derrick glanced at it, his expression darkening. "So, you already made sure you have a way out. Me not wanting you is one thing. You daring to leave me first is another.

"We'll dissolve it after the three-month term. You don't have to return the mating gift."

I placed the pen in front of him. "Outsiders can be told that you were the one who didn't want me. Your mother gets to save face, and you lose nothing."

Derrick stared at me for a moment before finally picking up the pen and signing his name at the bottom of the agreement. He pushed it back to me and gave a cold, mocking laugh. "In three months, don't come crying and begging me to keep you."

"I won't."

Derrick's expression grew even darker. He grabbed his car keys and slammed the door behind him as he left.

Less than five minutes later, I saw him from the window, with his arm around a woman in a red dress as they got into the car.

Derrick lowered his head and kissed her before starting the engine and driving away.

I drew the curtains and opened the map I'd prepared the night before.

An abandoned logging camp on the edge of Frostvale was being sold for an extremely low price.

I contacted the previous owner and paid the deposit. Then I messaged Noah Calderon, the lone wolf I'd known in my previous life, and asked him to bring some people over to repair the leaking roof first.

The first shipment of lumber, food, and medicine would arrive tomorrow.

Three months would be enough time to turn the place into a new home.

I tore open the bread that no one had touched during the ceremony and ate two bites before pushing the window all the way open.

Cold air rushed inside.

This time, there was no guard to close the window for me, and no one warned me that breathing cold air was bad for having pups.

The new settlement was already built, and the waterwheel turned from early morning until late at night.Several small packs along Frostvale began sending us timber orders, and the guards who had left Dad's caravan also brought their families over.We hired a doctor and built a school and a patrol squad. The pups, who once had to squeeze into the old warehouse and share a single piece of bread, could now carry wooden book boxes to school every day.On the day the new pack was officially established, I nailed the first rule to the door of the council hall: all mating, employment, and pack membership documents had to be agreed to and signed by the person concerned.A father could not sign for his daughter. A partner could not sign for the other person. Even the leader could not decide whether one of his people stayed or left.Any contract without the person's signature was invalid. Not long after the rule was posted, a girl who had just come of age came to me with an apprentice con

At dawn, a convoy from the Blackrock Pack stopped outside the lumber mill. The lead guard handed me Kane's order. "The Luna left the castle without permission. We've been ordered to bring her back."Leah immediately rushed over and wrapped her arms around my leg. "Erin, I can't go back. Kane won't let me live!"I pried her hands away.Leah clung desperately to the hem of my dress. "You were supposed to be the one who died in that castle! You were the one who died last time, so why am I the one paying for it now?"The wolves around us all looked at her. The guards assumed she was hysterical and tied her up before putting her in the car.Even as the door closed, she pressed herself against the window and glared at me. "I'll never forgive you!"I watched the convoy leave.Three days later, Blackrock Pack sent back Leah's ruby necklace. There was still blood on the stones. The messenger said that after returning to the castle, Leah had refused to take her medicine. She had even tr

After nightfall, wolves howled outside the lumber mill.Dad brought the remaining caravan guards to block the front gate, while Derrick vaulted over the fence from the side.Leah followed behind them, clutching the two newly rewritten mating contracts to her chest."Erin, sign." Dad threw the documents at my feet. "The Blackrock Pack could come for her at any moment. If we hand you over, Leah will be safe, and the family will be saved.""I already cut ties with you.""Blood can't be severed." He turned to the wolves behind him. "Grab her."No one moved.Dad turned around and finally realized that every wolf who had come with him was standing still. The warehouse at the lumber mill stood open, packed with timber and food stored for the winter.Several pups who had followed the caravan guards here sat beside the stove, each with a piece of bread in their hands.I looked at the wolves behind Dad. "Those willing to keep following him—come at me. Those willing to stay and work—dro

The next day at noon, Derrick brought six wolves and blocked the entrance to the lumber mill. He was wearing his warrior uniform, one hand resting on the short blade at his waist."Open the warehouse and the books. I need to take inventory of the shared property."I stood inside the fence without opening the gate for him. "You don't own anything here."Derrick pulled the mating contract from his pocket and held it up for me. "My name is on it."I had Noah bring over another document. It was the termination and property agreement Derrick had signed himself the day after our mating contract was completed. For three months, neither of us was to interfere with the other, and our separate property would remain our own. At the end of the three months, our relationship would be dissolved.Derrick stared at his own signature, his face growing darker by the second. "I didn't know you had a lumber mill back then.""So?""Sign a new agreement." He pushed the document through the gap betwe

When I arrived at Dad's house, Leah had already changed out of her dress and was curled up on the living room sofa. Two chests filled with jewelry sat beside the table. The red marks around her neck were still visible, and there were several fresh bruises around her wrists.Dad took one look at her before gesturing for me to sit. "Kane is in a hurry for an heir. Leah's body can't handle it. You're healthier than she is. Switching back is the most suitable arrangement."Derrick was sitting on the other side. At those words, he immediately looked at Leah.Lia shook her head at him, her eyes red. "It's all my fault. I thought I could bear it for Erin, but I didn't realize my body was this weak."Derrick took her hand. "You never should have had to bear it."Then he looked at me. "You've already taken him from me once. Now give Leah's place back to her. That's only fair."Dad pushed two newly drafted mating contracts toward me. Leah and Derrick's names were already written side by

"Yes."The hand Leah had pressed against the door suddenly went limp. The guard outside knocked again, but she seemed not to hear him. She just stared at me. "So you knew all along? You knew those medicines would make me bleed, you knew Kane would lock me in the castle, and you knew I would die?"Her voice grew sharper and sharper until she was practically shouting at me.I remembered myself lying on the bathroom floor in my previous life.I had called her and told her I'd been bleeding for more than ten days straight, begging her to contact Dad for me. She had only told me that I lived in a castle and wore jewelry, so I shouldn't be so greedy."Of course I knew."The resentment on Leah's face froze.I continued, "What you're going through now is what I went through in my previous life."Her lips moved, and her eyes began to dart away. "In my previous life, I didn't know you'd really die. I thought you were bragging again about how much Kane cared about you.""Now you know."
