Chapter 3

Luca Rowan
Three days later, Dad asked us to come home for dinner.

Derrick was waiting at the door early, which was unusual for him. His shirt was crisp and pressed perfectly.

It wasn't until he saw Leah's car that he showed the first smile he'd had in days.

I had just stepped into the living room when I stopped dead.

Four guards stood behind Leah. The one on the far left bent down to pull out a chair for her, his right hand resting on the backrest.

In my previous life, during the last time they forced medicine down my throat, I had bitten that hand and begged him through my tears to let me out. He had pried my teeth apart and poured the rest of the medicine into my mouth.

I instinctively backed away and hit the doorframe.

Derrick impatiently shoved me. "Why are you standing in the way?"

Leah turned around and waved at me with a smile. "Come sit down, Erin."

One of the guards walked toward me.

I raised a hand to stop him, my voice sharper than I had expected. "Don't touch me!"

The living room fell silent. He stopped two steps away, holding nothing but a cup of tea.

Dad's expression darkened. "Erin, Leah's people are just trying to be hospitable. What's with the attitude?"

With my back against the doorframe, I slowly steadied my breathing.

Leah took the tea and held it out to me. "Did Derrick upset you?"

Derrick immediately spoke up in his own defense. "I've barely been home. Who knows what she's throwing a fit about? You should spend more time with your sister."

Leah said it as though she were gently advising him, but the corners of her eyes crinkled with amusement.

I didn't take the tea. I walked around them and sat in the seat closest to the door.

During dinner, Leah had just picked up a piece of roast meat when one of the guards reached out to stop her. "Luna, the physician said you can't eat whatever you want."

Leah's fork froze in midair.

Dad hurriedly asked what was going on.

She set the meat down, her smile slightly stiff. "Kane is worried about my health, so he's having the physician take care of me. He wants us to have an heir as soon as possible."

Another guard opened an insulated food carrier and took out her specially prepared meal and a bottle of medicine.

When the cap came off, the familiar bitter, medicinal smell drifted over. My stomach suddenly lurched violently. I turned away and gagged.

Leah immediately covered her nose. "Erin, how am I supposed to eat with you doing that?"

I wiped away the tears that had been forced from the corners of my eyes with a napkin and looked up at her.

The guard placed a measuring cup beside her.

She hated the bitter taste and tried to put it back. "I'll take it when I get home."

"The Alpha requires you to take it on schedule." He didn't move. Another guard had already taken out his phone, waiting to record it.

Leah pressed her lips together.

Dad urged her from beside me, "Just drink it. Kane is doing this for your own good."

She had no choice but to pick up the measuring cup and swallow it.

The moment the medicine hit her throat, she doubled over, choking and coughing so hard she couldn't suppress the sound.

Derrick got up to bring her some water, but a guard blocked him. "No water for half an hour after taking the medicine."

I remembered those words.

I also remembered kneeling beside the sink, desperately trying to wash the taste out of my mouth with cold water.

The physician had said I needed to rest, but Kane had ordered him to increase the dosage. He feared that waiting would delay the birth of his heir.

Leah's face was bright red from coughing, yet she still straightened her necklace and forced a smile at me. "He's just in too much of a hurry. With so much territory in the Blackrock Pack, someone has to inherit it."

I picked up my own glass of water and slowly took a sip.

Leah stared at the rim of the glass, swallowing hard before placing a hand over her stomach. "Erin, once I give birth to the heir, you'll benefit from it too."

My phone vibrated under the table.

Noah had sent me a photo. The leaking roof of the warehouse had been covered with new wooden boards, and two pups sat by the door, sharing a piece of bread.

I turned off the screen.

Leah leaned toward me. "Erin, what are you looking at?"

"Just finding something to do."

She looked at Derrick, then gave me a pitying look. "A woman who already has a partner and still has to earn her own money. That must be exhausting."

As we were leaving, I heard Leah quietly ask one of the guards if she could take less of her evening medicine. "I've already thrown up twice today."

The guard opened the car door for her. "I'll report it to the Alpha."

She immediately shook her head. "No need. I was just asking."

The car door closed, and she waved at me through the window.

I stood there until the car disappeared down the road, then called Noah. "Get one of the rooms ready for me. Install the lock on the inside."

The new settlement was already built, and the waterwheel turned from early morning until late at night.Several small packs along Frostvale began sending us timber orders, and the guards who had left Dad's caravan also brought their families over.We hired a doctor and built a school and a patrol squad. The pups, who once had to squeeze into the old warehouse and share a single piece of bread, could now carry wooden book boxes to school every day.On the day the new pack was officially established, I nailed the first rule to the door of the council hall: all mating, employment, and pack membership documents had to be agreed to and signed by the person concerned.A father could not sign for his daughter. A partner could not sign for the other person. Even the leader could not decide whether one of his people stayed or left.Any contract without the person's signature was invalid. Not long after the rule was posted, a girl who had just come of age came to me with an apprentice con

At dawn, a convoy from the Blackrock Pack stopped outside the lumber mill. The lead guard handed me Kane's order. "The Luna left the castle without permission. We've been ordered to bring her back."Leah immediately rushed over and wrapped her arms around my leg. "Erin, I can't go back. Kane won't let me live!"I pried her hands away.Leah clung desperately to the hem of my dress. "You were supposed to be the one who died in that castle! You were the one who died last time, so why am I the one paying for it now?"The wolves around us all looked at her. The guards assumed she was hysterical and tied her up before putting her in the car.Even as the door closed, she pressed herself against the window and glared at me. "I'll never forgive you!"I watched the convoy leave.Three days later, Blackrock Pack sent back Leah's ruby necklace. There was still blood on the stones. The messenger said that after returning to the castle, Leah had refused to take her medicine. She had even tr

After nightfall, wolves howled outside the lumber mill.Dad brought the remaining caravan guards to block the front gate, while Derrick vaulted over the fence from the side.Leah followed behind them, clutching the two newly rewritten mating contracts to her chest."Erin, sign." Dad threw the documents at my feet. "The Blackrock Pack could come for her at any moment. If we hand you over, Leah will be safe, and the family will be saved.""I already cut ties with you.""Blood can't be severed." He turned to the wolves behind him. "Grab her."No one moved.Dad turned around and finally realized that every wolf who had come with him was standing still. The warehouse at the lumber mill stood open, packed with timber and food stored for the winter.Several pups who had followed the caravan guards here sat beside the stove, each with a piece of bread in their hands.I looked at the wolves behind Dad. The next day at noon, Derrick brought six wolves and blocked the entrance to the lumber mill. He was wearing his warrior uniform, one hand resting on the short blade at his waist."Open the warehouse and the books. I need to take inventory of the shared property."I stood inside the fence without opening the gate for him. "You don't own anything here."Derrick pulled the mating contract from his pocket and held it up for me. "My name is on it."I had Noah bring over another document. It was the termination and property agreement Derrick had signed himself the day after our mating contract was completed. For three months, neither of us was to interfere with the other, and our separate property would remain our own. At the end of the three months, our relationship would be dissolved.Derrick stared at his own signature, his face growing darker by the second. "I didn't know you had a lumber mill back then.""So?""Sign a new agreement." He pushed the document through the gap betwe

When I arrived at Dad's house, Leah had already changed out of her dress and was curled up on the living room sofa. Two chests filled with jewelry sat beside the table. The red marks around her neck were still visible, and there were several fresh bruises around her wrists.Dad took one look at her before gesturing for me to sit. "Kane is in a hurry for an heir. Leah's body can't handle it. You're healthier than she is. Switching back is the most suitable arrangement."Derrick was sitting on the other side. At those words, he immediately looked at Leah.Lia shook her head at him, her eyes red. "It's all my fault. I thought I could bear it for Erin, but I didn't realize my body was this weak."Derrick took her hand. "You never should have had to bear it."Then he looked at me. "You've already taken him from me once. Now give Leah's place back to her. That's only fair."Dad pushed two newly drafted mating contracts toward me. Leah and Derrick's names were already written side by

"Yes."The hand Leah had pressed against the door suddenly went limp. The guard outside knocked again, but she seemed not to hear him. She just stared at me. "So you knew all along? You knew those medicines would make me bleed, you knew Kane would lock me in the castle, and you knew I would die?"Her voice grew sharper and sharper until she was practically shouting at me.I remembered myself lying on the bathroom floor in my previous life.I had called her and told her I'd been bleeding for more than ten days straight, begging her to contact Dad for me. She had only told me that I lived in a castle and wore jewelry, so I shouldn't be so greedy."Of course I knew."The resentment on Leah's face froze.I continued, "What you're going through now is what I went through in my previous life."Her lips moved, and her eyes began to dart away. "In my previous life, I didn't know you'd really die. I thought you were bragging again about how much Kane cared about you.""Now you know."
