KALMIA’S POV

Arrow sat up, and set the phone down. He took my hands. “Breathe, Ava. Look at me.”

I tried. But I was trembling. Fear had set in. “You know what she did. What she’s capable of. You know how much she hates me.”

“She’s not coming near you ever again.” Arrow maintained a steady tone throughout his statement. Our experiences and people have changed since we lived six years ago. Her freedom exists but she possesses no control over you now.

“She tried to burn my whole life down.”

“She failed.”

I looked up at him. The certainty in his eyes was an anchor.

Arrow lifted me up into his arms while holding my head against his chest. I could feel his heartbeat. Strong. Steady. So different from my own. “You’re safe, Ava. I swear it.”

We sat for a long time, both of us staring at nothing.

“I can’t let her near Dawn.” I whispered at last. “She knew about Dawn. She used to talk about what she’d do if she ever saw her…”

Arrow pulled back, cupping my face. “Then we stay

OZZY’S POV “There’s a reason for that,” I said at last, not looking at him but at the empty blackboard behind him. “My… past isn’t like most people’s. And my mother… my mother was **Visha**.” Ahvi's eyes became wide open while he momentarily stopped crying. No one whispered the name **Visha** in this town. The name **Visha** appeared etched into this location's foundations and it remained present after five years. **They all knew the story. The legend. The horror. ** “Visha?” he asked, voice so quiet that he seemed not to believe his own ears. “But… what?” He gazed at me and found an unintended exhaustion in my eyes. “She was my mother. My biological mother. And, no. No. **I never agreed with what she did. Not once. I saw what she was doing. The destruction. The horror. **” I paused, because those memories tasted foul in my mouth. “I… I tried to fight her, tried to talk to her. But you can’t reason with a monster. She told me that I was weak, that I was a bleeding heart. In the en

GAVIN’S POV The door to the warehouse creaked shut. It was over. I stood motionless for a moment, alone with the silence and the last feeble pleas dying on her lips. There was no great sense of satisfaction, no swell of emotion. Only a quiet, cold feeling that the score was settled. It wasn't the first time that I thought of my father, a good man, whose life she had ended without a second thought. I was his arrow, swift and true. She had built her life on fear, on breaking the human spirit. I'd seen it, time and time again: the empty eyes, the ravaged minds, the empty husks of people who were once filled with lives, loves, families. I'd hunted her for years, driven not just by some warped sense of balance, but because she was the destroyer of my family, my enemy. I found her and we talked. Her attitude displayed arrogance mixed with a delusional belief in her own invincibility. As her wrists and ankles felt the pressure of ropes she sneered and spat before attempting to manipulate

KALMIA’S POV I was in the kitchen fast. The scent of home sunk deep into my bones and soaked them, soothing them like a tonic. The walls were warmer; the silence gentler. I wasn’t on edge or berating myself for still being. I wrapped the scarf around my head and pulled on a fresh pair of shorts and tank top before digging around in the cabinet. Something easy but filling, something that smelled like peace. I was chopping onions. But something compelled me to slam the knife against the cutting board. I looked up through my watery eyes, pushing my hand behind them. I was not sure if it was the sting of onions or the choking artist in me. I was so focused that I only then realized he was behind me, holding me around the waist. “Oh!” I yelped. “Arrow! You scared me.” He nuzzled against my neck. “I missed you cooking. Smelling like home. You.” “Finish cooking first,” I said while chopping onions but my lips kept twitching from overwhelming joy. “I understand,” he murmured int

KALMIA’S POV We were lost in our hug, in that moment of warmth and that thin atmosphere of forgiveness, when there was a loud clap. Clap! Clap! Clap! We looked over our shoulders. At her store entrance Jade stood with her hands slowly clapping while her face displayed a broad smile. In her gaze I could see both playful mischief and deep pride. I rolled my eyes playfully while showing a smile. Was that your reason for trying to get rid of me from your home? She laughed and shook her head. You really understood exactly what I was doing, Kalmia. You just needed a little help. The person who entered my store this morning appeared ghostly and was crying to request an audience with you. Arrow tucked his head in a bit shyly, but still kept a tight grip on my hand. “I just wanted to make things right. I couldn’t go another morning without you.” I stared at him. “Arrow... I—” He interrupted me kindly and moved my stray hair from my face without saying a word. “Little Dawn is waiting fo

KALMIA’S POV “From what?” she asked loudly. “From love? From healing? From your own happiness?” “From getting hurt again!” I cried, my voice breaking. “You don’t know what it felt like, Jade. Those words he said left me feeling completely empty. How worthless he made me feel.” She pulled away sharply like I had struck her with my hand. “I know I don’t,” she replied gently. “But I know what it looks like to lose yourself in bitterness. I saw you transform from someone who brightened every space to someone who struggles to face her reflection. My eyes burned from tears which I fought to control with furious blinking. “Don’t act as if you understand my best interests. She raised her hands up in exasperation. “Then what, Kalmia ? What do you want? From where I’m standing it sounds like you want everything to stay just the way they are in your anger.” Silence fell between us, painful and thick. A trembling breath escaped me as I quietly said “I need tranquility, Jade.” I long for
