The velvet-lined ballroom of the Grand Hotel National de Lucerne was suffocating. Heavy crystal chandeliers dripped above a crowd draped in tailored tuxedos and couture silk, their quiet laughter blending with the discreet hum of millions of francs changing hands. It was an auction for the elite, a playground where power was displayed under the guise of philanthropy.

I stood near the perimeter of the room, clutching a crystal flute of untouched champagne. My father had dragged me here as a preliminary soft-launch into high society—a public display to show the Mendez family was still standing tall, despite the quiet rot beneath our foundation.

Then my eyes caught Lot 14 on the velvet display pedestal at the center stage.

It was an antique platinum necklace, minimalist in its geometry, featuring a single, flawless untreated sapphire suspended from a mesh of micro-pave diamonds. It wasn't flashy or ostentatious. It was understated, classic, and breathtakingly elegant. The deep blue gem seemed to trap the ambient light of the room and hold it hostage. I found myself stepping closer, drawn to its silent, cold perfection.

"Looking at your future, Miss Mendez?"

The voice came from directly behind my shoulder. Low, smooth, and laced with a rich, dark resonance that sent an involuntary chill straight down my spine.

I didn't need to turn around to know who it was. The atmosphere around us shifted instantly, the air growing dense and charged.

I took a slow breath, turned on my heel, and met the striking grey eyes of Sebastian Morgan.

He was impeccably tailored in a charcoal Tom Ford suit, his tall frame looming over me with effortless dominance. His dark hair was combed back, exposing sharp, sculpted features that looked carved from marble. There was no warmth in his face. None at all. Only an intimidating, calculated stillness.

"Mr. Morgan," I said, keeping my voice as steady as my trembling hands would allow. "I didn't realize you frequented art auctions."

"I don't," Sebastian replied, his gaze dropping briefly to my lips before rising back to my eyes. "I frequent investments. And occasionally, I come to observe what catches the attention of my acquisitions."

My jaw tightened at the word. Acquisitions.

"I am not an acquisition, Sebastian," I whispered, stepping closer so the surrounding guests wouldn't overhear our quiet war. "And I certainly don't belong to you yet."

A faint, dangerous tilt appeared at the corner of his lips. It wasn't a smile; it was the expression of a predator amused by a cornered deer.

"The paperwork on my desk says otherwise, Zee," he murmured, his voice dipping low enough that it felt like a physical touch. "Your father signed the final transfer terms this morning. You are merely enjoying your last few weeks of delusion."

I swallowed the lump of pride in my throat and turned my gaze back toward the sapphire necklace, using it as a shield to break his suffocating eye contact. "It's exquisite."

"It's a piece of cut mineral," Sebastian corrected smoothly, standing beside me, his shoulder nearly brushing mine. "Overpriced and ornamental."

"It has history," I countered, leaning into the defiance that was the only thing keeping me upright. "It belonged to a French poet in the late nineteenth century. It wasn't made to display wealth. It was made to capture a feeling."

"Feelings are poor financial metrics," he said quietly.

Before I could reply, the auctioneer’s gavel struck the wooden podium, shattering the low murmur of the crowd.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we now move to Lot 14," the auctioneer announced, his voice amplified across the room. "An exquisite late-nineteenth-century platinum and sapphire pendant. Bidding opens at two hundred thousand Swiss francs."

Without hesitation, I lifted my numbered paddle.

"Two hundred and fifty thousand," I called out, my heart hammering against my ribs. I had been saving my personal inheritance funds, keeping them isolated from my father’s collapsing accounts, precisely for something that felt entirely my own. I wanted this piece. I wanted to hold something beautiful that hadn't been bartered away in a boardroom.

"Two hundred and fifty thousand to the young lady in the front," the auctioneer declared. "Do I hear three hundred?"

A paddle raised across the room. "Three hundred thousand."

I raised mine again immediately. "Four hundred thousand."

The crowd murmured softly. I held my breath, watching the auctioneer. Four hundred thousand was near my cap, but the thrill of securing it—of owning something completely untouched by my family’s tragedy—was intoxicating.

"Four hundred thousand to Miss Mendez," the auctioneer praised. "Going once..."

"One million."

The room went dead silent.

The voice hadn't come from across the room. It had come from right beside me.

I spun around, staring at Sebastian in utter shock. He hadn't even raised his paddle high; he held it loosely between two long fingers, his face completely devoid of emotion as if he had just ordered a cup of espresso.

"What are you doing?" I hissed under my breath, my face flushing hot with humiliation and rage.

Sebastian didn't look at me. His icy grey eyes remained fixed on the stage. "Bidding."

"I wanted that necklace!" I whispered harshly, gripping my paddle so tightly my knuckles turned white. "You don't even want it! You just said it was an overpriced mineral!"

"Five hundred thousand was its market value," Sebastian said, his tone infuriatingly calm as the auctioneer frantically scanned the room for a counter-offer that would never come. "One million ensures no one else in this room speaks again."

"One million francs, going once... twice... Sold to Mr. Sebastian Morgan!" the gavel slammed down.

Applause broke out across the ballroom. Sebastian didn't clap. He simply turned his attention back down to me, stepping into my personal space until I was forced to tilt my head back to meet his gaze.

"Why do you do this?" I demanded, tears of frustration threatening to break through my icy exterior. "You've taken my family, you've taken my freedom, you've taken my future. Can't you leave me a single thing?"

Sebastian reached out, his long fingers stopping just short of brushing the bare skin of my collarbone, right where the sapphire would have rested. The heat radiating from his hand was agonizingly close.

"Because, Zee," he whispered, his eyes darkening with a possessive intensity that made my breath catch in my throat, "you don't wear jewelry bought with your own money anymore. You wear what I place around your neck. If you wanted the sapphire, all you had to do was ask me for it."

"I would rather choke," I spat.

Sebastian smiled, cold and unyielding. "Then I suggest you get used to the sensation."

The clock on the dashboard read 2:14 AM. Rain lashed against the windshield in violent, relentless sheets, the wipers slapping back and forth in a frantic, useless rhythm. The highway stretched out ahead of me like a black ribbon winding through the dark Swiss pines. I pressed my foot harder against the accelerator, my heart hammering against my ribs so violently I could feel it in my throat. I had snuck out through the servants' entrance while the house was drowned in sleep, carrying nothing but a small leather duffel bag, my passport, and whatever cash I could scrape together. I couldn't stay in that house a second longer. I couldn't exist as a bargaining chip, waiting for Sebastian Morgan to drag me into his golden cage. My hands shook against the leather steering wheel. Reaching over with one trembling hand, I unlatched my smartphone from its mount, tapped open the voice memo application, and pressed record. "I hate them," I whispered into the quiet cabin of the car, my voice

The heavy mahogany doors of our estate offered no real protection from the storm brewing outside—or the one my father had invited directly into our living room. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the primary drawing room, watching the rain streak down in desperate, frantic lines. I had barely been home twenty minutes. I hadn't even taken off my heels or unclasped the emerald dress I had worn to the auction. My heart was still hammering against my ribs, a lingering echo of the public humiliation I had delivered to Sebastian Morgan when I turned my back on his million-franc necklace. Then came the sound of tires crushing the gravel on the driveway. Two pairs of headlights cut through the downpour, blinding and relentless. A minute later, heavy footsteps echoed across the marble foyer. "Zee!" My father’s voice boomed before he even crossed the threshold. He appeared in the doorway, his face flushed a deep, unhealthy crimson, his silk bow tie undone and hanging loosely a

The sharp, decisive strike of the auctioneer’s gavel was still echoing through the grand ballroom, but to me, it sounded like a cell door locking into place. Around us, a polite ripple of applause swelled. The elite crowd, draped in tailored tuxedos and diamonds, craned their necks to catch a glimpse of the man who had casually dropped a million francs on an understated piece of jewelry without a single flicker of hesitation. "If you will excuse me, Zee," Sebastian murmured, his voice a low, smooth purr beside my ear. "Duty calls." I stood frozen as he turned and strode toward the mahogany stage. He moved with a predatory grace that commanded the room, every line of his tall, dark silhouette radiating absolute authority. The crowd parted naturally for him, murmuring in breathless, hushed tones. "Is that Sebastian Morgan?" a woman near the champagne fountain whispered loudly enough for me to hear. "Look at who he was standing with," her companion replied, fanning herself with an e

The crystal chandelier above the dining table hummed with a low, imperceptible vibration, casting fractured light across the silver cut-out dinnerware. My mother was meticulous about the table settings. Every fork had to sit exactly two inches from the edge of the mahogany surface, as if precision could mask the rotting foundation of the Mendez legacy. "Eat your soup, Zee," my mother said softly. She didn't look up from her own plate, her manicured fingers wielding her spoon with practiced grace. "You're picking at it." "I'm not hungry, Mama," I replied, setting my spoon down with a sharp, deliberate clink. Across the length of the table, my father cleared his throat. It was a heavy, raspy sound, laden with the weight of cigars, expensive scotch, and the slow, agonizing collapse of our family's wealth. For months, the quiet tension in the estate had been suffocating. Whispers behind closed doors, late-night phone calls that ended in slammed receivers, and the sudden disappearance o
