Adrian

I was halfway through a stack of quarterly reports when a soft knock landed on my office door.

I didn’t look up immediately.

"Come in."

The door opened, quiet but precise, the way only one person in this building ever managed to do.

Evander.

I finally lifted my gaze from the paperwork as he stepped inside with a tablet in his hand

"What’s my schedule concerning the hotel rebrand?" I asked, leaning back slightly in my chair.

He glanced down at his tablet. "I’ve rescheduled the follow-up meeting for two days from now with Elevate Agency."

I gave a small nod. "Good."

Right on cue, his voice came again, this time lighter, almost amused.

"Speaking of Elevate Agency…"

I paused.

He continued, "That was one fierce marketing strategist yesterday."

My pen stilled. I didn’t need to ask who he meant.

My mind flicked back to her. Amelia if I remember her name correctly. Before the thought could fully settle, my phone rang.

I glanced at the screen.

Irene.

I answered immediately, already gesturing for Evander to step out. "You can go."

He nodded once and left quietly as I brought the phone to my ear.

"Irene."

Her bright voice burst through the speaker immediately.

"Big brother!"

Despite myself, the corner of my mouth lifted in a smile, just slightly.

"How are you?" I asked.

"I’m good! I just got back from college," she said, sounding entirely too pleased with herself. "And Mom said it’s been forever since you came home."

I leaned back fully into my chair now, rubbing a slow hand across my jaw.

"That’s an exaggeration."

"It is not," she shot back quickly. "You’ve basically abandoned us for your companies."

I sighed.

"I’ve been busy."

"You’re always busy," she muttered but there was no real heat behind it. That was Irene. She complained, but she never really held things against me.

Then her tone brightened again.

"Oh! And I’m planning my graduation party. You have to be there."

I frowned slightly.

"Your graduation is in what? Like four months away."

"Exactly," she said proudly. "Early planning."

A short chuckle slipped out before I could stop it.

Sometimes I really wondered how we had the same parents.

"Whatever you say," I murmured. "I’ll come by the house when I can."

"Promise?"

I hesitated for half a second, just long enough that I'm sure she noticed.

"…Yes."

She hummed, satisfied.

While she started rambling about decorations and themes, she did most of the talking while I just listened.

Irene and I were opposites in almost every way.

She was sunlight, loud, warm. I was… not.

She filled rooms. I controlled them.

Where she laughed easily, I calculated. Where she trusted quickly, Well, I didn't. I was deliberately distant.

And the truth was… I didn’t have a problem with that. This version of me worked. It rebuilt an empire when there was a takeover attempt when my father was still in position.

It kept people exactly where they were supposed to be.

Even now, I could see it, the way employees subtly straightened when I walked into a room. The quiet alertness that followed me through the building. The careful way people chose their words around me. I just felt respect came easier when people weren't too comfortable.

And yet…

My twenty-two-year-old sister, eight years younger than me, still challenged me like none of it mattered.

Her, my parents, my COO and Caden were the only people bold enough to challenge me sometimes.

There was another knock.

I glanced toward the door just as it opened.

As coincidence would have it Caden walked in. Right on time. He was like my right hand man.

"Irene," I said into the phone, already reaching for the end of the call, "I have to go. I’ll call you some other time."

"Don’t forget!" she warned.

"I won’t."

I ended the call and set the phone down just as Caden dropped casually into the chair across from my desk like he owned the place.

He didn’t.

But he was one of the few people bold enough to act like it.

"Tell me something useful," I said. "How is the acquisition of Harrington’s company coming?"

Caden’s easy expression shifted, just slightly.

Not good news.

"I don’t think they’ll sell," he said.

My eyes narrowed.

"Explain."

He leaned back in the chair. "I got information from an internal source."

I waited.

He smirked faintly. "Apparently… they don’t want to sell to someone with your... reputation."

A slow pause filled the office.

"My reputation?" I asked flatly.

"Yeah." He tilted his head. "Specifically… the arrogant playboy CEO part."

Playboy?

My brow creased before I could stop it.

"That’s ridiculous."

Cden lifted one shoulder. "Maybe. But Harrington is old money. Very family-oriented. Word is he prefers doing business with men in stable, committed relationships."

I stared at him.

"My personal life has nothing to do with my ability to scale his company. That doesn’t even make sense."

"I didn’t say it did. But Try telling that to a seventy-year-old billionaire who still thinks it's 1950"

Silence stretched between us.

Then Caden added, a little too casually, "If you really want the company… you might have a problem."

My jaw tightened slightly. This was ridiculous, too ridiculous.

I did want the company. Badly.

It was a perfect fit. Which meant walking away wasn’t an option.

Caden watched me carefully before adding, "Look, if you really want the company, you might have to adjust strategy."

My eyes flicked to him. "Meaning?"

"I mean… you have been seen with multiple women."

My gaze snapped to him.

"Multiple women?" I repeated.

He winced just a little.

"Well, when you put it like that, it sounds worse."

My expression hardened.

Because the irritating part was, it wasn’t entirely wrong.

But most of the women I’d been involved with… They’d wanted something.

Influence, money, access.

And the few who hadn’t? The one who actually did love me.

They wanted something worse. Me.

Specifically, they wanted me to love them back.

And I just… Couldn’t.

It wasn’t cruelty. It wasn’t even intentional.

It was just like reaching for something that simply wasn’t wired into me.

I wasn’t wired for that kind of attachment.

Caden raised both hands in mock surrender when my glare sharpened.

"I’m just saying. Unless you plan on falling in love in a like month's time, we’re stuck."

I exhaled slowly. Annoyed but thinking.

Because one thing was certain.

I was not losing Harrington’s company over something this… trivial.

Caden leaned forward slightly, voice turning sly.

"You know… there is another option."

I didn’t like that tone.

"Speak."

He pushed off the chair as he stood up. "Think about it. Worst case…" His grin turned knowing. "You fake a relationship."

I gave him a flat look and he only laughed.

"I’ve got something to attend to," he said, already heading for the door. "We’ll talk later."

The door clicked shut behind him and silence returned.

Slowly, I leaned back into my chair with my eyes drifting to the ceiling.

Fake a relationship. The idea was absurd. unnecessary and inconvenient.

And yet... Thoughtful.

  • A Deal With Mr. CEO   Chapter 65: What Are We Doing?

The following week, we all that were involved in the Rebrand were called to the boardroom that afternoon. We all filed in. Mr. Hillary stood at the head of the table, looking pleased as he addressed us. "You all did an exceptional job," he said, his voice warm. "The client, Mr. Adrian Langford was satisfied. Everything was on point. Well done to every single one of you." A round of applause rippled through the room. I clapped along with everyone else. Mr. Hillary continued, "Because of the success of this project, two other major firms have already reached out to us for similar rebranding work. This is a significant win for Elevate. It puts us firmly on the map in the premium acquisition space." "We’ll be discussing the specifics of the new accounts later this week," Mr. Hillary added, gathering his things. "But for now, take the win. You’ve earned it. Meeting adjourned." Another round of applause followed, louder this time. A few people cheered. After a few more conver

Just then, my phone rang. I glanced at the caller ID and it was mom. I walked to a more quiet corner and picked it up. I picked up, trying to keep my voice steady. "Hey, Mom." "Amelia," she said immediately, her tone a mix of surprise and concern. "How are you dear? Did you make a mistake? I saw that you transferred half a million dollars to my account." I leaned my head against a cold concrete pillar, closing my eyes for a second. Earlier in the week, after verifying everything with the bank and making sure the transfer was secure, I had sent her half of the money that Adrian had deposited to my account. It felt like the right thing to do. She had actually saved up for me while I was growing up. It was from that money I bought the house I lived in now, even though Zoey and Brianna had teased me endlessly about buying a place with more than one bedroom when I was the only one living there. "It was not a mistake, Mom," I said quietly. She was silent for a beat. "Did you t

  • A Deal With Mr. CEO   Chapter 63: Terms Completed

AMELIA The following Monday arrived with finality. Today marked exactly four months since the contract began, which meant it was the end of everything. I woke up that morning feeling the weight of it. When I agreed to this entire thing, I would never have believed this is how it would feel like when it ended. I went through my usual routine and then got dressed for work. Adrian was scheduled to come in for the campaign approval meeting that afternoon. When I arrived, the team whose work was directly tied to the Relaunch project gathered in the boardroom. Not a huge crowd, just the core group, senior strategists, creatives, and a couple of account leads. I took my usual seat between trying to steady the nervous flutter in my stomach. When Adrian walked in with Evander, the room’s energy shifted in that familiar way. He exchanged a brief, professional greeting with Mr. Hillary, then gave a polite nod to the rest of the room as a whole. His eyes didn’t sweep across to find m

  • A Deal With Mr. CEO   Chapter 62: The Line She Drew

ADRIANDuring one point in the conversation, she smiled at something I said and I swear I felt my heart do a little flip. And what I realized too was that I cared about her. Last week, when I had called her repeatedly and she didn’t pick up, I became worried, because one thing I've come to realize for the past months was that she was mostly awake around the time I was calling, so I had been genuinely worried. Worried enough that I drove to her house unannounced. The dinner continued peacefully. We shared laughs and stories. But at the back of my mind, the thought of the contract ending soon refused to leave. In just a couple of days, this... whatever this was would be over. No more dates. No more excuses to see her. No more of these quiet moments that had started to mean too much. I didn’t want to admit how much that bothered me. When we finished, we walked out of the restaurant together. The night air had grown cooler. We got into the car and I drove off. When we fin

  • A Deal With Mr. CEO   Chapter 61: Where It All Slows Down

AMELIA It was date night. I stood in front of the mirror in my bedroom, staring at my reflection for what felt like the hundredth time. I stared at the gown Adrian had got me during the early stage of this entire thing, a deep midnight blue that fell elegantly to the floor with a subtle slit. I ran my hands down the smooth fabric, trying to steady the nerves that had been building all day. Just a few more days, I reminded myself. A few more days and this would all be over. I would go back to being single, the way I had chosen, the way I had always preferred. That had been my rule for years, no dating, no complications, no risk of getting hurt again. But then Adrian came along. I shook my head sharply, as if the motion could shake the thoughts away. No. I wasn’t going to spiral tonight. This was supposed to be our last public date. A final performance before the contract ended. I would enjoy it and keep things light. I took a deep, shuddering breath, pressing my palms

  • A Deal With Mr. CEO   Chapter 60: The Final Countdown

The creative review meetings that week were intense but productive. We spent hours going through mood boards, logo variations, campaign visuals, and early copy directions. Adrian sat at the head of the table most days, listening carefully, asking questions, and giving thoughtful feedback. When each session wrapped up, however, he developed a habit that quickly became noticeable to everyone. He would always make his way over to me afterward. He didn't just give me a professional nod or a polite "good job" in front of the board. He would weave through the clusters of associates, bypass the senior partners, and stand right in my personal space. Sometimes it was about a specific slide he wanted me to revisit. Sometimes it was just a casual "How’s the rest of your day looking?" The staring was impossible to ignore. Colleagues didn’t even try to be subtle anymore. Heads turned. Whispers spread. Casey and Megan were the worst, they were basically vibrating with the need to interro

ADRIAN Harrington led the way a little further down the terrace, past the main dining setup and toward a more quieter section. He didn’t waste time on small talks. "I won’t keep you long," he said. "You already know what this conversation is about, right?." "Yes, I do know," I replied. "I’

  • A Deal With Mr. CEO   Chapter 32: We Should Talk

AMELIA Wednesday evening, after I got off from work that day, I stood beside Mom, both of us facing the building she had been talking about since yesterday. "This is the one," she said, almost to herself. "I’ve had my eye on it for a while now. It's a perfect size for the expansion." I smile

  • A Deal With Mr. CEO   Chapter 21: What Happens Now?

AMELIA Did that really just happen? I mean… it did. I was there. But still. My legs were still shaky as I padded down the last few steps into the living room. I let out a quiet breath as I walked further into the living room, my steps slower than usual, like I was trying to process everything

Damn! I actually was attracted to him. The words hung between us, undeniable now that it has been said out loud. His gaze held mine for a second longer, like he was making sure. With his hand still resting on my cheek, he tilted his head to the other side of my face and leaned in as his lips b
