She negotiated peace for five years while her fated mate raised the children she'd left behind with the best friend who now called them hers. When Lyra returns, she finds her mate celebrating five years with the woman she once called her other half. Her twin pups, stolen from her arms as infants, call another woman "Mama." Her place has been erased, her sacrifice forgotten. Then her best friend and sister frame her for poisoning her own children. Condemned by the mentor she trusted, Lyra is exiled to the rogue lands, where she uncovers the truth: the woman she called Mother has been poisoning her since childhood to suppress her Shadowborn bloodline—a power feared for generations. Exile doesn't break her. It awakens her. Five years later, Lyra returns stronger than ever, wielding shadow magic and truth-seeing abilities capable of exposing every lie. Her former mate rules with strategies she created, while her best friend wears the Luna title that should have been hers. Worse still, she discovers the woman who raised her was never her real mother—and one final betrayal is already in motion. Her only ally is Kael Northwood, a rival Alpha who has searched for her since she disappeared. He believes in her innocence, but their undeniable mate bond is forbidden by ancient law. Now Lyra must choose: reclaim the family stolen from her—or embrace the destiny waiting in the shadows. Some betrayals destroy you. Hers awakened the monster they should never have tried to bury.

CHAPTER ONE:

 THE HOMECOMING

The forest path felt different under Lyra's feet after five years away.

She'd walked this trail a thousand times before her mission, back when every tree and rock and turn had been as familiar as breathing. Now something felt wrong. The air tasted strange. The birds sang different songs. Everything felt off, like the world had shifted slightly while she was gone.

Or maybe she was the one who had changed.

Lyra adjusted the weight of her travel pack and kept walking despite the unease coiling in her stomach. Her auburn hair, longer now than it had ever been, stuck to the back of her neck with sweat. Summer heat pressed down on her shoulders. Her clothes were dusty from weeks of travel. Her boots had holes worn through the soles.

But none of that mattered anymore because she was finally home.

Five years. Five long, exhausting years of negotiating peace between packs that had been at each other's throats for decades. Five years of sleeping in strange beds and eating unfamiliar food and missing the people she loved with an ache that never quite went away.

Missing her children most of all.

Lyra's hand moved unconsciously to her chest, to the empty space where the bond with her twins should have been strong and clear. She'd felt it when they were born, that incredible connection between mother and child. Then she'd left on her mission, and distance had made the bond fade to almost nothing. Just a whisper. A ghost of what it should have been.

But soon she would hold them again. Soon she would feel that bond strengthen. Soon she would finally be the mother she'd wanted to be for five long years.

The memory of their birth was still so vivid. The pain and the joy and the overwhelming love that had flooded through her the moment the healer placed two tiny, perfect babies in her arms. A boy and a girl. Aiden and Luna. The most beautiful things she'd ever seen.

She'd only had three days with them.

Three days of memorizing their faces, their scents, the way they fit perfectly in the crook of her arms. Three days of falling completely, irrevocably in love.

Then Helena had come to her room with grave news. The mission couldn't wait any longer. The peace talks were falling apart. If Lyra didn't leave immediately, the treaty would fail and war would consume the region. Hundreds would die.

"The twins will be safe here," Helena had assured her, stroking the babies' soft heads with gentle fingers. "Marcus will care for them. I'll help. They need their mother, of course, but they need peace more. They need a world without war. That's what you're giving them, Lyra. That's what a good mother does. She sacrifices for her children's future."

Lyra had believed her. She'd kissed her sleeping babies goodbye and walked away with tears streaming down her face, believing she was doing the right thing. The noble thing. The thing a good mother would do.

Now, five years later, she was coming home to them.

She'd survived five years of hell thinking about that reunion. Imagining Aiden and Luna running into her arms. Imagining Marcus's proud smile. Imagining being a family finally, completely, the way they were supposed to be.

The forest began to thin. Lyra recognized specific landmarks now. That oak with the twisted trunk where she used to climb as a child. That stream where she'd caught her first fish. The boulder shaped like a sleeping bear.

She was home. Really, truly home.

Lyra emerged from the trees and stopped short when she saw the border guards. James and Robert stood at their posts, chatting quietly. When they noticed her, their eyes went wide with shock.

"Lyra?" James stammered, his face going pale. "What are you doing here?"

The question confused her. "I live here. I'm coming home."

The guards exchanged a look that made Lyra's stomach twist. It was the kind of look people shared when they knew a secret. A bad secret.

"We weren't expecting you," Robert said carefully, his jaw tight. "Did Marcus know you were coming?"

"I sent word three weeks ago." Lyra frowned. "Didn't he get my message?"

Another loaded glance between the guards. James looked down at his feet. Robert's expression closed off completely.

"Right," James said too quickly. "Welcome home, I suppose."

He didn't sound welcoming. He sounded nervous.

Lyra walked past them, confusion growing with every step. Why weren't they happy to see her? She'd been gone for five years working for the pack, risking her life for their safety. Shouldn't they be celebrating her return?

She headed toward the pack house, following the sounds of music and laughter that grew louder as she approached. Her heart lifted slightly. Maybe they were throwing her a welcome home party. Maybe that's why the guards had looked so strange, they were trying not to spoil the surprise.

But when she got close enough to see the decorations, her heart stopped.

A massive banner hung across the front of the pack house, bright letters spelling out words that made no sense.

"Happy 5th Anniversary, Marcus & Sera"

Lyra stood frozen, staring at the banner. Fifth anniversary. Marcus and Sera. Her mate and her best friend.

No. No, this had to be wrong. This had to be some kind of mistake.

She moved closer on legs that felt like they were filled with stones. Through the large front window, she could see inside the main room. Pack members filled the space, all facing the center where Marcus stood.

Her Marcus. Tall and handsome with blonde hair catching the light. That smile she used to love.

Next to him stood Sera, wearing a beautiful blue dress. On her head sat a silver circlet, the mark of a Luna

The mark that should have been Lyra's.

As Lyra watched, unable to move or breathe or look away, Marcus leaned down and kissed Sera. The pack cheered and raised their glasses in celebration.

Then Lyra saw the children.

Two small figures ran up to Marcus and Sera, laughing and excited. A boy and a girl with blonde hair. They wrapped their arms around the couple's legs.

"Mama! Papa!" they called out in high, sweet voices.

The world tilted sideways. Lyra grabbed the wall to keep from falling.

Aiden and Luna.

Her babies. Her children. The twins she'd left as infants, believing they would be safe and cared for until she returned.

Lyra's vision blurred. Her chest felt like someone was crushing her ribs. She couldn't breathe. She couldn't think. Couldn't process what she was seeing.

Through the window, she watched as Helena appeared beside Sera. Lyra's mother was helping the twins blow out candles on a massive cake, laughing with genuine warmth that Lyra had never seen directed at her. Helena looked at those children, at Lyra's children, with more love and joy than she'd ever shown her daughter.

The math crashed into Lyra's brain with brutal clarity.

Fifth anniversary. The twins were five years old. Marcus and Sera had been together since before Lyra left.

While Helena was convincing Lyra to leave her newborn babies for the good of the pack, she'd been planning to give those babies to Sera.

While Marcus was promising to keep their children safe, he'd been planning to raise them with someone else.

They'd stolen her children.

They'd let her believe she was doing the right thing, making a noble sacrifice, when really they'd just wanted her gone so they could have her babies.
