She took out a handbag that was lying on its own in her big travel bag and squeezed the document and card into it.

She turned once again to the mirror, all dressed up and ready to say goodbye to her new apartment – at least she wouldn't be back till midnight.

After saying her prayers, she turned towards the door to exit and dashed down the long, broken stairs.

"Be careful, madam. You don't want to get yourself hurt, do you?" A young-looking man in his early thirties said.

Aurora nodded expressionlessly and continued to walk as fast as possible.

"Can I give you a ride?" He asked, seeing her haste.

Aurora sneered slightly as his audacity annoyed her.

Firstly, he dared to ask to ride an 'unattractive woman.'

Secondly, he seemed quite well-nurtured and pleasant, but he could also be a spy.

The only difference was that he had on casual clothes. But neither less, a spy was a spy.

"Any problem? Don't you have a job perhaps?" She said without a string of emotion on her face.

"I was just trying to be polite to a lady." He replied with a polite smile, which angered Aurora even more, and she rushed out of the building immediately and into a cab.

The man still stood there, watching her, not until the cab zoomed off.

"She's out on a disguise, keep a close watch on her."

The cab arrived in front of the large gates of De'Marco Enterprises, and Aurora paid up the driver immediately, watching him zoom off before turning towards the large skyscraper building.

The roadsides were busy and so occupied that the noise from the factories and people was like the sounds of hell and chaos.

She breathed in and out before walking into the building through the gates. As she got in, she was greeted with silence but a long row of mighty cars on each side.

Some were motorcycles, and some were typical kinds of bikes.

She saw a large helicopter on the far top of the roof, which she imagined to be owned by the CEO, and the thought of seeing him again made her feel slightly nervous.

She walked in despite the silence outside the building, and as she entered the lobby, she realized that the company's walls and doors were soundproof because the noise from inside never escaped outside.

Not even a bit..

She walked over to the receptionist, who looked full of anxiety and tiredness.

"Hi, I'm here for the interview. I applied yesterday." She said with a little smile.

"Uhm..okay, can I know your name please." The receptionist picked up a pen and a booklet.

"The name you used in applying." She continued, looking up at Aurora.

"Oh, okay…" Aurora paused; she had never applied, but she decided to stay calm and act naturally.

"Bailey Brooke is my name but I used on bailey in the application, is that bad?" She said.

"No not at all, this is the main interview so the online application is just a farce." The receptionist replied, calming Aurora's spirit down.

She wrote down her name on the booklet and looked up at her. "Okay, now you are in; go into the elevator to the 9th floor. You'll meet with the waiting room and the other participants there."

Aurora nodded, and as she was about to walk into the elevator, everyone suddenly began to panic and rushed to their office area as quickly as possible.

The receptionist herself nearly dropped her phone as she was holding it in the process of hiding it in her bag.

Aurora was dumbfounded as the once noisy lobby was now quiet and more reasonable.

She turned towards the direction everyone was busy staring at, and her jaw dropped literally…

"Good morning, boss." The receptionist greeted them as he and some other men walked past her desk.

Like a demi-god, he stood tall and firm. Face expressionless, lips thin and pale, jawline straight and focused, eyes sharp and observant, not to say too much, he was just so perfect…

He replied to her with a simple nod, and she seemed so satisfied and over the moon as if she had been given a golden medal.

He walked into the elevator with the men, and Aurora had to rush in before the doors closed.

She tried her best not to turn behind her as his short stare at her made her shiver a little, but she remained focused.

The elevator stopped at the same floor she was headed to, and she walked.

She turned around just before the doors closed completely, and their eyes met for the second time. As the doors closed, their eyes could tell each other goodbye.

Aurora turned back around as the elevator moved upwards again, probably headed to the 10th or 11th floor.

She walked into the waiting room, filled with individuals, and realized that there would be real competition.

"Here you go, your number, ma'am." An Indian man, young-looking and nice, said with a smile as she entered the room.

It appeared that he was in charge of distributing numbers to new intakes, and she glanced at the number assigned to her on a card.

'456?' she screamed inwardly. 'it's no wonder they made the room big enough.'

"Next , number 26." A voice suddenly called out from an inner room.

Were they seriously going to call everyone bit by bit, or was it all a joke? she had to ask.

"Hi, I'm Mira and I'm honestly so nervous. How about you?" A tall but skinned girl approached her with a loving smile.

Aurora turned to her with a snorted, "Any problem?"

"No, no, no problem. You don't seem anxious or nervous at all." The girl chuckled awkwardly because she meant to say that Aurora looked unattractive and too focused.

Aurora chose to ignore her as she knew exactly what she meant.

"I'll just go wait over there for my turn now." The girl said as she realized that Aurora wasn't giving her a listening ear.

On several occasions, Aurora would catch the girl staring at her, and she would turn away, looking like a scared little girl.

Soon, it was the girl's turn, and she didn't spend more than three minutes inside the inner room before running out like a scared child.

"Uh..number 455 please."

One number to her, she began to get prepared. She checked the documents and her card; her courage and seriousness – check.

The exact number – 455 - walked out with a sad expression that made Aurora realize that everyone wanted the job, but the catch was that only one man would be left standing.

She needed the job for her mission and would retire within three months, so one of them would have a chance again after three months or less.

"Number 456, please come in."

As she stood up, graceful, confidently, expressionlessly, and well-reserved, everyone could not help but wonder why she was so unattractive in the face.

But Aurora was unmoved by their curiosities as she kept up her expressionless face.

She walked into the inner room and shut the door behind her.

"Name and country?" He asked, and she handed him her card.

"You don't speak?" He asked.

"I assume my card will show you all you need." She spoke confidently, as if she were an AI, and kept her serious face.

He glanced down at the card in his hand, and his eyebrows furrowed slightly.

Even though Aurora knew it was a fake, she stood firm and unmoved by his little frown.

"Okay.." he nodded.

"College degree?" She handed him a document once again.

He scanned it for some minutes and felt utterly impressed.

"You studied international relations and social science? That's really impressive, a really nice fit."

"How old are you?" He asked.

"23 years old." She replied almost immediately.

He nodded again.

After scanning her documents one more time, he handed them back to her.

"I'm Sultan Li, and congratulations, you are hired." He said and reached out to her for a handshake.

Aurora accepted it and smiled for the first time. "When do I start sir?"

"Right now if that's possible." He replied after taking some notes from the others.

Aurora nodded. 'Just what I wanted.'

"Go up to the 11th floor and introduce yourself to the boss." He smiled. "And also, don't be terrified." He advised

Aurora nodded again, and her seriousness and straightforwardness impressed him.

"She's a perfect choice." he said to the others as soon as Aurora walked out of the door.

They all nodded.

"We are so sorry, but we lost track of her." The men stood in front of the large table, surrounded by chairs, in the spacious conference room, which was filled with prime ministers and government officials.

"And is that an excuse?" the executive chairman, sitting at the head, asked, filled with fury.

They kept mute, and the man signaled for the bouncers to get behind them – a gun was pointed to their head, each…

"Let's put this out nice and clear.. tell us all you know about her whereabouts or else you will die this very moment." Another man said.

"We will speak please." The men chorused. "We only know that she went to see a hacker in Vincent Street and he told us the name she would be using."

"And what is that name?" Yet another man spoke.

"Hannah Jason." One of the men in the front of the conference hall replied.

"Is that all?"

"Yes that's all we found out."

Puff–puff..

We're the sounds of gunshots that followed.

"Useless individuals." The executive chairman hissed.

"Take their bodies out and clean up the mess." He said as he began to set up his smoke pipe.

"The issue about the blood coin is getting delayed, and we need to act fast to take it out of the custody of those bloody mafias unless we might have to suffer for it." One of the prime ministers approached the executive chairman.

"We need to give it time. After all she will lead us to the coun itself so no need to rush things too much." The executive chairman replied.

"I understand, chairman. We all understand, but the situation at hand is so critical. Don't you think we should send someone else, so there can be two." The prime minister explained.

The chairman saw some sense in what he said, and he nodded slightly.

"I understand your words, but you know how smart she is. She might not even use that name, but we have to leave all hope on her boss for now since she will update him on every situation." He released the smoke through his mouth.

"Place a call to him for some updates and also give him some cash so he speaks." He continued.

"That's no problem, sir. "The prime minister walked out, followed by the others as they walked out one by one, each trying to avoid the red and dark stain of the blood on the ground leading to nearly the whole room.

"Clean those up properly. I don't want no stain on my tiles." The executive chairman said to the cleaners who had come to clean up the blood.

"Father," A lady dressed in a sexy red dress rushed into the room only to see the pool of blood.

"Was Aurora finally killed?" She chuckled.

"We still need her, so no." The chairman replied.

"Well I could do what she does actually." The lady pouted.

"Come here, my sweetheart, come to daddy." He said, and the lady sat on the table, placing one of her legs on him.

"Muah…" he placed a kiss on her leg.

Ever since her mother had died, her father had always adored her, and she got everything she wanted – including Aurora's death.

"I honestly would like to marry Julian father. And I do not want Aurora getting in the way." She pouted again as she knew how fantastic Aurora was.

"No worries my dear jewel, she can't take him from you." The chairman replied.

"Okay, daddy love you. I need to go for some shopping." She said happily and rushed out of the room, placing a kiss on her father's cheek.

"We have tracked the full name given to us, and we have found her." The tracker said, as he had been in the room the whole while.

"That's great." The chairman paused.

"Watch her closely!"

  • A Deal with the Mafia Lord   The Breath After the End

The sea was still. The kind of still that made it hard to breathe. Smoke hung low over the harbor, rolling slowly over blackened ruins and fractured stone. The city was silent, almost reverent, as if the world itself had paused to witness the aftermath of what had been unleashed—and what had been lost.Julian sat at the edge of the pier, his hands stained with ash and salt. Aurora’s body lay beside him, her skin pale but serene, her hair fanned across the wet ground like gold threads caught in twilight. He had lost track of time. Maybe hours had passed. Maybe days. The sun refused to rise. Her hand was still warm when he held it, but the pulse he searched for was gone. He brushed his thumb over her knuckles and whispered, “You did it. You really did it.”The words broke in his throat. He had always believed he was the one who saved people—through control, through power, through force. But Aurora had done it by giving everything.“You were never afraid of dying,” he murmured, his voice

  • A Deal with the Mafia Lord   The Awakening

The air split open with a sound like thunder buried under water. Aurora clutched Julian tighter as the ground beneath them trembled, the red light from the cracked Blood Coin bleeding through the darkness. Every pulse from it sent a wave of heat through her chest, stealing her breath. It wasn’t just energy anymore—it was something alive, something ancient, something that had been waiting for this moment.Julian groaned in her arms, his head rolling against her shoulder. His skin was hot, his pulse erratic. “Aurora,” he rasped. “Get away from it.”She shook her head, her voice trembling. “I can’t leave you.”His eyes fluttered open, a faint gold shimmer still lingering in them. “If it wakes fully, it won’t stop. Not for me. Not for anyone.”Before she could answer, the ground cracked again, and a fissure spread outward, glowing red-hot. The air filled with a low hum—a heartbeat, deep and resonant, shaking the world. The Blood Coin lifted from the ground, turning slowly, fragments of it

  • A Deal with the Mafia Lord   The Man Who Wasn’t Julian

The air shimmered with the quiet after the storm. Aurora stood perfectly still, her pulse thudding in her throat. Julian—if that was truly him—stood only a few feet away, his figure haloed by the dim gold light of the Blood Coin. Everything about him looked the same. His shoulders, the way he tilted his head, the familiar warmth that should have melted her. But it didn’t. It chilled her instead. He smiled, slow and deliberate, his voice low. “You pulled me back, Aurora. You never could resist saving people who didn’t want saving.”Her lips parted. “Julian, it’s really you?”He took a step closer. The ground beneath his boots rippled faintly like disturbed water. “Who else would it be?”She should have run to him. She should have thrown herself into his arms and let the ache that had been tearing her apart dissolve. But something deep inside her screamed not to move. The air around him wasn’t right. It hummed wrong—too still, too perfect, like the silence before an explosion.Aurora sw

  • A Deal with the Mafia Lord   The Return of the Blood Coin

Aurora’s breath hitched as the water rippled, sending gold spirals through the black surface. The Blood Coin moved slowly but deliberately, like it had a mind of its own, gliding toward the shore. For a heartbeat, she couldn’t move. Her pulse quickened, the cold air biting at her damp skin. “No,” she whispered. “This can’t be happening.”But it was.The coin shone brighter, pulsing with the same rhythm as the golden thread against her chest. Her body reacted before her mind could catch up—she stumbled backward, her heart hammering as memories flashed like lightning. The gate. The screams. Julian’s sacrifice. She took another step back, shaking her head. “You’re gone. You were destroyed. You can’t come back.”A gust of wind swept across the pier, cold and sharp, carrying with it a voice—low, distorted, and familiar. “Nothing stays buried, Aurora.”Her breath caught. “Who’s there?”From the shadows near the end of the dock, a figure emerged. Tall. Wrapped in a dark coat, his face half-h

  • A Deal with the Mafia Lord   Shadows of the Living

Aurora didn’t move for a long time. The city was awake around her—horns blaring, neon signs flickering, footsteps splashing through puddles—but she was still caught between two worlds. The rain tasted like the sea from Country C, and every drop felt like a reminder that she shouldn’t be here. Not without him.She stood slowly, her knees trembling. The world spun for a moment before it steadied. The thread on her chest pulsed once, faintly, like a heartbeat that wasn’t her own. She touched it with shaking fingers. “Julian?” she whispered. Nothing. Only the whisper of wind across wet streets. She pulled her coat tighter around her and started walking, her mind blank but her body moving on instinct. The city lights blurred past, smeared gold and silver through the mist. Somewhere behind her, she swore she heard footsteps following, but when she turned, the street was empty.Hours later, she found herself at the edge of the harbor. The skyline shimmered across the water, steady and cold.

  • A Deal with the Mafia Lord   The Pulse Between World

Aurora stood frozen as the glow around her deepened, golden light seeping from beneath her skin. The air thickened, humming with the same rhythm that had haunted her dreams since the night she left Country C. Julian’s fingers were still around her wrist, his grip steady, grounding. But the light between them was anything but gentle. He felt it first—a sudden heat, alive and violent, surging up her arm and into his veins. He hissed through his teeth and pulled back slightly, but didn’t let go. Aurora gasped, clutching his hand. “It’s happening again,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “It knows you’re here.”Julian’s jaw tightened. “Then let it know I’m not leaving.”The glow rippled, casting their faces in shifting gold. For a moment, she saw both of them reflected in the window—him standing tall and defiant, her trembling but unbroken. It was like watching two flames battle to stay lit in the same wind.“Julian, listen to me.” Aurora’s voice shook, desperation breaking through the
