Elena Hayes had never imagined that saving her family would bring her to the office of Kaysen Vance.

The man was known for two things: his fortune and his lack of mercy.

And tonight, she was about to discover whether the rumors were true.

“Mr. Vance will see you now.”

Elena followed the assistant into a large office overlooking the city. A man stood behind a black desk, reading a document. He didn’t look up when she entered.

“Miss Hayes,” he said, still looking at the paper. “Sit down.”

She sat, placing her bag beside the chair.

Kaysen finished reading before he finally raised his eyes. His expression was calm, almost bored, as if this meeting were just another item on his busy schedule.

“I assume you know why you’re here.”

“My family’s debt,” Elena replied. “Unless you’ve invited me here to discuss the weather.”

His eyes lifted fully to her face.

The assistant near the door looked as though he wanted to disappear.

Kaysen placed the document on his desk.

“You’re either very nervous or very rude.”

“Can’t I be both?”

A short silence followed.

Then Kaysen leaned back in his chair.

“Interesting.”

He opened a folder and turned it toward her. Inside were copies of the loan agreement, payment records, and a final notice bearing her father’s signature.

“Your family borrowed money from one of my companies. The payment deadline is tonight. The debt remains unpaid, and the legal process is ready to begin.”

Elena looked at the papers.

“I know what the agreement says.”

“Then you know your options.”

He placed two sheets in front of her.

“Option one: pay the full amount before midnight. Option two: sign this contract.”

She looked at the second sheet.

“What kind of contract?”

“Six months of employment under my supervision. You’ll handle certain business and personal arrangements, attend events when required, and live at my residence for the duration of the agreement.”

Elena slowly looked up.

“Live at your residence?”

“Yes.”

“Is your office not large enough to hold all your employees?”

His jaw tightened slightly.

“No one said you were being hired as an ordinary office assistant.”

“Then perhaps you should explain the job before expecting me to sign away six months of my life.”

For the first time, Kaysen put down his pen.

He studied her for a moment, his grey eyes moving over her face as if he were deciding how much patience she deserved.

“You’re quite rude for someone asking me to save her family.”

“And you’re quite arrogant for someone who thinks money gives him the right to speak to people however he likes.”

The assistant shifted near the door.

Kaysen didn’t even glance at him.

“Leave us.”

The door closed.

Elena suddenly became aware of how quiet the office was.

Kaysen rose from his chair and walked around the desk. He stopped beside the window, leaving several feet between them.

“Let me make something clear, Miss Hayes. I don’t enjoy repeating myself, and I don’t make offers out of kindness. Your family owes my company money. I am offering you a way to settle that debt.”

“And in return, you get to decide where I live and what I do for six months.”

“You’ll have duties, working hours, and private accommodation. The contract will explain the rest.”

“How generous.”

His gaze sharpened.

“Do you always have something unpleasant to say?”

“Only when someone gives me a reason.”

Kaysen turned toward her fully.

“You’re confusing my patience with weakness.”

“And you’re confusing my desperation with stupidity.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he returned to the desk and opened the contract.

“Read it. Ask whatever questions you need to ask. If you agree, sign it. If you don’t, you can leave and find the money somewhere else.”

Elena looked at the clock.

Eleven twenty-three.

Thirty-seven minutes until midnight.

She hated him for making the choice sound so simple.

She began reading.

The contract listed her responsibilities, her working hours, and the conditions of her stay at his house. There were rules about confidentiality and business travel, but nothing that explicitly required her to give up contact with her family.

She pointed to one paragraph.

“What does this mean?”

“You must inform my staff when you leave the house and when you expect to return.”

“Why? Am I going to be under house arrest?”

“No. But the staff needs to know whether to expect you for work-related arrangements.”

“And if I decide to go somewhere without telling anyone?”

“Then you’ll be breaking the rules you agreed to follow.”

She looked at him.

“You really enjoy giving orders, don’t you?”

“I enjoy things being done properly.”

“That must make you very difficult to live with.”

“That remains to be seen.”

His answer was so calm that she couldn’t tell whether he was annoyed or amused.

She continued reading.

Then she stopped at the final page.

“If I sign this, my family’s debt will be completely settled?”

“Yes.”

“No hidden fees? No additional payments next month? No surprise demands?”

Kaysen placed both hands on the desk and leaned forward slightly.

“Miss Hayes, I have no interest in chasing your family for money. I want the agreement honored. Nothing more.”

She studied him, searching for a sign that he was lying.

His expression gave her nothing.

“One more question,” she said. “What happens if I refuse?”

“Your family will be subject to the legal process stated in the original agreement. I won’t interfere.”

“You could destroy their lives.”

“The debt was not created by me.”

“But you have the power to stop it.”

“Yes.”

The answer came without hesitation.

Elena hated him for being so honest about it.

She looked down at the contract again. She could leave. She could refuse to let him control the next six months of her life.

But she couldn’t pay the debt, and she couldn’t ask her parents to lose everything because of her pride.

She picked up the pen.

“I have conditions.”

Kaysen raised an eyebrow.

“You’re still negotiating?”

“I’m signing a contract, not surrendering my brain.”

A faint, cold smile appeared on his face.

“Go on.”

“I keep contact with my family. You don’t interfere with my personal relationships. And you don’t touch me without my permission.”

His smile disappeared.

“Your family is not part of the negotiation. You may contact them, and you may visit them. Your personal relationships are your business, provided they don’t interfere with your duties.”

“And the last condition?”

“I heard you.”

She held his gaze.

“Good.”

Elena looked down and signed the contract.

For a few seconds, neither of them moved.

Then Kaysen took the papers, checked her signature, and called his legal department.

“The agreement is signed. Settle the debt and cancel the seizure order.”

He ended the call.

Elena’s shoulders finally relaxed.

“My family can keep the house?”

“Yes.”

She swallowed, fighting the sudden sting in her eyes.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me yet. You haven’t started working.”

She gave him a tired look.

“You really can’t let anyone have a happy moment, can you?”

“Not when there’s work to be done.”

He closed the folder and stood.

“Come with me.”

“Where?”

“To the car. You’re moving into my house tonight.”

Elena stared at him.

“I thought I could come tomorrow.”

“You can collect your belongings tomorrow. Your room is ready.”

“You planned this before I signed?”

“I prepare for both outcomes.”

She stood and picked up her bag.

“Do you ever consider asking people what they want?”

“Of course.”

“And?”

“And then I make the decision I believe is best.”

Elena let out a disbelieving laugh.

“You’re unbelievable.”

“So I’ve been told.”

He opened the door and waited.

She walked past him, then stopped in the hallway and turned back.

“One thing, Mr. Vance.”

He looked at her.

“If you expect me to obey every word you say without question, you chose the wrong woman.”

Kaysen studied her for a long moment.

Then he stepped aside to let her pass.

“We’ll see, Miss Hayes.”

His voice was calm, but something in his expression made her feel that the next six months would be far more difficult than she had imagined.

And as the elevator doors closed behind them, Elena realized that saving her family had been the easy part.

Living under Kaysen Vance’s roof was going to be an entirely different battle.

The ballroom was more luxurious than Elena had expected.Enormous crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, golden lights reflected off the marble floors, and elegantly dressed guests mingled throughout the room, exchanging quiet conversations. She entered beside Kaysen, her arm resting on his just as it had when they arrived. She was trying to hide her nervousness, but it wasn’t easy. She wasn’t accustomed to attending events like this or standing among people who seemed to know one another so well, while she didn’t even understand why some of them kept looking at her.Kaysen leaned slightly toward her.“You’re nervous.”She turned to him.“Is it that obvious?”“To me, yes.”She looked away toward the ballroom.“Perhaps because I don’t know anyone here.”“You will.”He said it with confidence, then picked up a glass from a passing waiter.“And there’s no need to try to please everyone.”She almost smiled.“I wasn’t planning to.”“Good.”They continued walking, and Kaysen occasionall

  • A Debt Called Destiny   19- The Upcoming Gala

Ever since that evening with Adam, Elena had found herself thinking about Kaysen more than she wanted to.She couldn’t understand his behavior. He told her not to let anyone touch her, yet he acted toward her in ways that left her unsure how to handle his own closeness. Worse, he never seemed as confused or hesitant as she was. He simply did whatever he wanted with infuriating calm, then went about his day as though nothing had happened. She decided not to give it any importance. But Kaysen, in his own way, wasn’t making that easy.⸻The following morning, Elena was coming downstairs with her laptop, a thick folder, and several loose papers she wanted to review before the meeting. At the last step, one of the papers slipped from between the folders. She bent down to retrieve it quickly, but another hand reached it first.“Are you carrying half the office with you?”She looked up.Kaysen was standing in front of her. He had picked up the thick folder from her hand without waiting for a

  • A Debt Called Destiny   18- Strange Behavior

Saturday morning was different from all the others. For the first time since moving into the Vance estate, Elena hadn’t woken up thinking about files, meetings, or whatever tasks Kaysen might assign her. She had plans with her friends, and that alone put her in a better mood than she’d expected. She chose a simple dark-colored dress that fell just below her knees and left her hair loose over her shoulders. After applying a little perfume, she stood in front of the mirror, studying her reflection for a moment. She looked as though she were reclaiming a small part of her life. When she went downstairs, she found Kaysen in the sitting room, seated on the leather sofa and going through some papers. He raised his eyes as soon as he heard her footsteps. He said nothing at first. He simply looked at her for a long moment before closing the folder in his hands.“Going out?”“Yes. I told you yesterday that I was meeting my friends.”“I remember.”Silence settled between them for a few seconds.

  • A Debt Called Destiny   17- The Boundaries of the Estate

Two weeks had passed since Elena had moved into the east wing of Kaysen’s estate. She still hadn’t grown entirely accustomed to the place, although the wing was spacious enough to serve as an independent home. It had a large bedroom, a private sitting room, a small study overlooking the back garden, and even a side entrance that allowed her to reach the garden without passing through the rest of the estate.Yet she didn’t feel the sense of independence that all that space suggested. The guards stationed at the entrances, the cameras monitoring the corridors, and the gates that wouldn’t open until every visitor’s identity had been verified constantly reminded her why she was there. The danger she’d been exposed to hadn’t disappeared, and Kaysen had given her no option to return to her own home until he was certain the situation was safe.At first, she’d assumed her stay would last only a few days. But she was beginning to realize that he didn’t treat her as a guest who would be leaving

  • A Debt Called Destiny   16- Boundaries No One Has the Right to Cross

Attending meetings was not an optional part of Elena’s job.Ever since she’d started working for Kaysen, the agreement had been clear: she was expected to carry out whatever tasks the company required, whether that meant preparing documents, overseeing projects, or attending meetings with clients and investors. In return, her earnings would be deducted from the debt her brother had left behind. She didn’t have the luxury of choosing which assignments suited her or objecting to every task she disliked. And that was how she found herself that evening in a private room at one of the city’s most luxurious hotels, sitting beside Kaysen for a business dinner with Mr. Richard Harrison, one of the most influential investors the company was hoping to secure a long-term agreement with. The man was in his late fifties, highly influential, and accustomed to having everyone’s attention. From the moment he arrived, it was clear that he preferred to conduct conversations on his own terms.Kaysen int

  • A Debt Called Destiny   15- It Wasn’t a Question

Elena arrived at the office at her usual time, but she hadn’t forgotten the meeting that had suddenly appeared on her schedule. She had already decided not to attend. There was no professional reason for her to sit through a meeting when she didn’t even know its subject, and she was no longer willing to treat Kaysen’s sudden decisions as orders that couldn’t be questioned. She opened her laptop and sent his assistant a brief message asking for clarification about the meeting.Less than five minutes later, a reply appeared.“Mr. Vance is waiting for you in the conference room.”She closed the message with an irritated sigh. She could ignore it, but she knew that wouldn’t make the matter disappear. So she picked up her notebook and headed toward the conference room, determined not to let him turn this into another confrontation.Kaysen was seated at the far end of the table. A single folder lay in front of him, beside a cup of untouched coffee. He looked up when she entered.“Sit down.”
