Chapter 3

Penulis: Jinx
Outside the door, the kidnapper's curses and screams echoed. It sounded just like everything I'd endured over the past three days.

In less than ten minutes, it fell absolutely silent outside.

It took everything I had to stop myself from trembling.

Abigail returned to my side carrying the scent of blood. She leaned down and kissed my forehead.

She whispered gently, "Don't be afraid, honey. I'll make anyone who dares hurt you pay dearly."

I struggled to keep my body from shaking, but I didn't have time to wipe away the tears at the corners of my eyes.

Abigail froze and asked in a slightly shaky voice, "Honey, w-when did you wake up?"

The panic and anxiety in Abigail's eyes were on the verge of spilling over.

Clenching my teeth, I replied softly, "Just now. The pain woke me up. Why was it so noisy outside? Was someone causing trouble?"

Abigail relaxed visibly and said gently, "Yeah. There was a mad dog running amok and biting people. I had someone put it down."

Just as she reached out to hug me, Noah's anxious voice suddenly came from the doorway. "Lorne, I'm so sorry I came so late. I heard the kidnappers broke your legs. I don't think you'll ever be able to perform on stage again. This is such a pity, but it's okay. I'll perform for you from now on."

After saying those heartless words, Noah slowly walked over to me. He took one glance at my face and suddenly took several steps back.

He exclaimed, "Ah! Lorne, y-your face…"

Abigail shot to her feet and immediately covered his mouth, signaling him not to say another word.

I took a deep breath, touched my face, and pretended to ask curiously, "Hmm? What's wrong?"

When Noah saw my face covered in scars, a flicker of delight flashed through his eyes. Holding Abigail in his embrace, he shook his head at me.

He said, "Nothing… It's nothing. Get well soon, okay? Do you want to come to tonight's award ceremony with us?"

I knew Noah had brought it up on purpose. He was obviously flaunting the fact that he'd effortlessly taken over my position as principal performer.

Abigail frowned slightly and hurriedly explained, "Honey, I forgot to tell you about tonight's award ceremony. I figured you weren't in any condition to go with your legs like this, so I arranged for Noey to attend in your place. You don't mind, do you?"

I was disabled now. Even if I went, I'd only embarrass Abigail.

Before I could answer, Noah suddenly stepped forward and grabbed the carved emerald pendant around my neck.

He praised in delight, "Wow, Lorne. Your emerald pendant is so beautiful. Can I borrow it for one night so I can look a little more presentable?"

This emerald pendant was my family's heirloom. It was also the only keepsake Mom had left me. There was only one like it in the entire world—it was priceless.

Perhaps realizing how inappropriate he'd been, Noah let go of the pendant and said awkwardly, "Please don't be mad at me, Lorne. My family's poor, so I've never seen such a beautiful pendant before."

Abigail's expression darkened slightly.

After thinking for a long moment, she spoke with some hesitation. "You're right. That was my oversight. I didn't prepare any jewelry for Noey. Honey, just lend him the emerald pendant for one night."

I let out a cold laugh. "Since when do you get to decide what happens to my belongings?"

Abigail's expression turned visibly grim and displeased.

Sensing the tension, Noah took Abigail's hand and said with a dismayed expression, "It's okay. I don't deserve something that valuable anyway. I just thought that, seeing as I'm the troupe's principal performer, I would embarrass Abby if I dressed too plainly…"

Before he could finish, Abigail stepped forward and grabbed my wrist.

She ordered, "It's just a pendant. I'll buy you ten more tomorrow. How's that?"

I shook off her grip, barely suppressing the fury surging inside me. My face devoid of any expression, I took the emerald pendant off my neck.

With a faint smile, I said, "If Noah likes it that much, then he can have it."

Noah happily reached out to take the pendant.

But the instant he reached out for it, I let go.

The emerald pendant fell straight to the floor with a sharp clack. It shattered into countless pieces, just like the ten years of love between Abigail and me.

In that single instant, it broke apart until it was completely beyond repair.

Abigail's eyes widened, and she gasped dramatically in shock.

It turned out that throughout the years, I had been the one accommodating her.Looking at the defeated, broken woman before me, I spoke again. "Abigail, saving you from that lake all those years ago is the greatest regret of my life."The moment those words left my mouth, Abigail's face turned ashen. Bloody tears streamed from her eyes.Everything that had sustained her psyche collapsed in an instant. She had personally ordered someone to break the legs and destroy the perfect face of the person who had once saved her life. Our ten years of love had been completely ruined by one single command from her.Abigail dropped to her knees before me, covering her face as she sobbed uncontrollably. "Lorne, I'm sorry. Please forgive me… Please tell me how I can ever make up for all the pain and suffering I caused you?"Looking down at her expressionlessly, I said, "You want to make up for it? Fine. Don't ever let me see you again for the rest of your life."Mom spent a great deal of mone

When Noah saw me again, he didn't even recognize me. He probably never imagined that the crippled, blind man would one day stand on the stage again. After finishing my performance, I returned to the dressing room. The moment I looked up, I saw Abigail waiting outside the door. She looked at my fully recovered legs and my somewhat unfamiliar face.Carefully, she said, "Honey, y-you…"She didn't know how to express the turmoil of emotions inside her. When she saw my familiar eyes, the guilt in her heart became impossible to suppress. My gaze remained calm, and my voice was flat as I asked, "Who are you?"The expression on Abigail's face fell instantly. She took a few quick steps toward me and grabbed my wrist. She said in a low voice, "Lorne, I'll admit my mistake this time, okay? I never signed the divorce papers. We're still husband and wife!"I shook off her hand and sneered, "Ma'am, please have some self-respect."With that, I walked away.Abigail's face turned deathly pale

After Abigail sent the messages, there was no reply even after a very long time. They were like rocks that had sunk to the depths of the ocean, never to be heard from again.…Mom took me straight to the hospital after we got off the plane, arranging for the best doctors to treat me.The surgery lasted more than ten hours, but fortunately, it was a success. My attending physician said that as long as I committed myself to rehabilitation, there was a chance I could stand again.Hearing the words "there was a chance" made my heart sink. As for the scars on my face, even reconstructive surgery could never restore the flawless appearance I once had.On the third day after returning home, Mom asked worriedly, "Lorne, have you thought about getting plastic surgery?"After a moment's thought, I nodded and replied, "I want to change my whole face."With my new face, I would have a new identity. Before the surgery, I said to the doctor, "Please retain the deepest scar on my cheek."Fro

Meanwhile, the moment Abigail received the divorce agreement at the hospital, she flew into a rage. She had never imagined that I would divorce her. After all, our relationship had been wonderful over the years. No matter what happened or what difficulties we faced, we'd always stood together through it all.She paced restlessly in the hallway. After calling me several times and finding my phone switched off every time, she gritted her teeth and sent me a text message.Abigail wrote, "You hurt Noey and disfigured his face. How can you just run away? Get back here and apologize to him immediately! Are you still angry about the principal performer position? You'll never be able to stand again. What's wrong with me giving that spot to Noey?"He once saved my life, which means you owe him one too. I honestly don't know what you're thinking!"Just as she was furiously typing, a scruffy, bearded man suddenly appeared in the hospital hallway. Sneaking around while no one was paying atten

Abigail said over the phone, "Honey, I'll be entertaining clients late tonight. Go to sleep first. Don't wait up for me."The next second, Noah sent me a photo of Abigail's back as she showered. My heart, which was already deeply wounded, started bleeding all over again.Holding back my tears, I calmly began packing my luggage. At 7:00 am tomorrow, Mom would be picking me up at the airport.Looking around the home I'd lived in for ten years, I realized I no longer felt the slightest bit of attachment.Early the next morning, I left for the airport just before 5:00 am. I wanted to get away from this home as quickly as possible. While I waited for Mom at the stairwell of the airport, a familiar voice suddenly came from behind me. "Lorne, so you really were pretending to be blind."My heart skipped a beat as I turned around. It was Noah.Dropping his disguise, he kicked my wheelchair and sneered. "Tsk. Don't tell me you're pretending to be crippled too?"Seeing me gripping the ar

Abigail's voice suddenly rose several octaves. "Have you lost your mind, Noah? Why didn't you catch it? Do you have any idea how precious that emerald pendant was?"That was probably the first time Abigail had ever yelled at him. Tears immediately welled up in Noah's eyes.He defended himself, "It wasn't me! Lorne did it on purpose! If he didn't want to lend it to me, then fine. Why are you blaming me?"I stared ahead with lifeless eyes and asked curiously, "Hmm? What happened?"Perhaps Abigail had forgotten what kind of man I was. I'd rather ruin something than let my enemy have the satisfaction of getting something from me. If Abigail wanted to take my pendant from me against my will, I'd rather smash it than let Noah have it!Grinding her teeth, Abigail shouted at Noah, "Lorne is blind! Are you blind too? Why didn't you catch it?"Noah's aggrieved expression barely concealed the anger he was trying to suppress. But the moment he heard that I was blind, a trace of delight appea
