Chapter 2

Author: Jinx
My heart sank as I opened my eyes wide, praying I hadn't gone blind.

The moment I opened them, Abigail's trembling voice was the first thing I heard. "Thank goodness. Honey, you're finally awake."

Abigail's worried, anxious face entered my field of vision. It was so familiar, yet it filled me with boundless terror.

I thanked the heavens that I could still see. That meant the doctor hadn't gone through with Abigail's cruel request at the last moment. He'd left me a sliver of hope.

I blinked and deliberately asked in a panicked voice, "Abigail, why didn't you turn on the lights? Why can't I feel my legs?"

Abigail's expression immediately brightened. She suppressed the smile threatening to spread across her face.

She said apologetically, "Honey, it's daytime. Those kidnappers were so ruthless. I'm sorry you had to suffer. Don't worry. I'll definitely cure your sight and your legs."

I knew that pretending to be blind was the only way I could get away from her.

So, I feigned utter despair and lay back down while muttering, "Okay. I want to be alone for a while."

After Abigail left, I took out my phone and immediately contacted my mother. I asked her to come back to the country and take me away. I didn't tell her what had happened because I didn't want her to worry.

When that was done, I quickly drafted a divorce agreement. Then, I suddenly noticed a new member had joined our theater troupe's group chat.

It was Noah.

The troupe leader announced to everyone that from now on, Noah would be the troupe's principal performer. It turned out Abigail had insisted on breaking my legs just to clear the way for Noah.

It had taken me ten years to secure my position as the principal performer. No one knew how much blood, sweat, and tears I'd poured into earning that spot.

But just like that, Noah had replaced me effortlessly.

Just then, a call from an unfamiliar number came in.

Noah's unhurried voice came through the receiver. "Abigail gave me your position as principal performer. I'll also be attending tonight's award ceremony in your place. Listen here, Lorne Carmack. I'm not just coming for your career. I'll take away your friends and Abigail too.

"I'm going to take back everything you stole from me ten years ago, one by one! Do you know why Abigail has been so heartless toward you? It's because she's already pregnant with…"

Before he could finish, I hung up. I was afraid to hear him say that Abigail was pregnant.

Throughout our marriage, I'd always prioritized my career, and Abigail had fully supported me. I'd once believed she respected all my choices because she loved me.

But now I felt as though countless arrows were piercing my heart.

When Abigail came back into the room, she found that I'd fallen asleep. She sat beside the bed and gently massaged my legs, which had completely lost all sensation.

I couldn't tell whether she was doing this out of guilt or out of some other emotion, like sympathy. No matter what it was, I solemnly swore that I would never forgive her. The agony of being betrayed and abandoned by the person I loved most lingered in my heart and refused to fade away.

Just then, I heard the front door being kicked open with a violent crash.

A voice that sent chills down my spine drifted in from outside. "Ms. Hunley, didn't you say you'd pay me if I mess your husband up? Why did I only get five million dollars? Do you think you can just screw me over?"

Wait… Wasn't that the kidnapper's voice?

Three days earlier, the kidnappers had demanded one billion dollars from Abigail as my ransom.

I knew that was practically her entire fortune. Just when I'd thought I was as good as dead, the kidnappers had suddenly said that the money had arrived and released me.

But now, the fugitive kidnapper had come to demand more money. Could it be that Abigail had orchestrated the kidnapping herself?

The terror of the three days of brutal torture came flooding back, and I stopped breathing altogether.

Abigail merely brushed her fingers over the scars on my body and said coldly, "So you came. You're the one who left these scars on him, aren't you? How dare you do that!"

Before she had even finished speaking, several bodyguards pinned the kidnapper to the floor. They covered his mouth and dragged him into the hallway just beyond the wall.

Abigail picked up an ashtray and casually shut the door behind her.

As the kidnapper's screams echoed through the hall, I clutched the bedsheets tightly to keep myself from crying out.

It turned out that throughout the years, I had been the one accommodating her.Looking at the defeated, broken woman before me, I spoke again. "Abigail, saving you from that lake all those years ago is the greatest regret of my life."The moment those words left my mouth, Abigail's face turned ashen. Bloody tears streamed from her eyes.Everything that had sustained her psyche collapsed in an instant. She had personally ordered someone to break the legs and destroy the perfect face of the person who had once saved her life. Our ten years of love had been completely ruined by one single command from her.Abigail dropped to her knees before me, covering her face as she sobbed uncontrollably. "Lorne, I'm sorry. Please forgive me… Please tell me how I can ever make up for all the pain and suffering I caused you?"Looking down at her expressionlessly, I said, "You want to make up for it? Fine. Don't ever let me see you again for the rest of your life."Mom spent a great deal of mone

When Noah saw me again, he didn't even recognize me. He probably never imagined that the crippled, blind man would one day stand on the stage again. After finishing my performance, I returned to the dressing room. The moment I looked up, I saw Abigail waiting outside the door. She looked at my fully recovered legs and my somewhat unfamiliar face.Carefully, she said, "Honey, y-you…"She didn't know how to express the turmoil of emotions inside her. When she saw my familiar eyes, the guilt in her heart became impossible to suppress. My gaze remained calm, and my voice was flat as I asked, "Who are you?"The expression on Abigail's face fell instantly. She took a few quick steps toward me and grabbed my wrist. She said in a low voice, "Lorne, I'll admit my mistake this time, okay? I never signed the divorce papers. We're still husband and wife!"I shook off her hand and sneered, "Ma'am, please have some self-respect."With that, I walked away.Abigail's face turned deathly pale

After Abigail sent the messages, there was no reply even after a very long time. They were like rocks that had sunk to the depths of the ocean, never to be heard from again.…Mom took me straight to the hospital after we got off the plane, arranging for the best doctors to treat me.The surgery lasted more than ten hours, but fortunately, it was a success. My attending physician said that as long as I committed myself to rehabilitation, there was a chance I could stand again.Hearing the words "there was a chance" made my heart sink. As for the scars on my face, even reconstructive surgery could never restore the flawless appearance I once had.On the third day after returning home, Mom asked worriedly, "Lorne, have you thought about getting plastic surgery?"After a moment's thought, I nodded and replied, "I want to change my whole face."With my new face, I would have a new identity. Before the surgery, I said to the doctor, "Please retain the deepest scar on my cheek."Fro

Meanwhile, the moment Abigail received the divorce agreement at the hospital, she flew into a rage. She had never imagined that I would divorce her. After all, our relationship had been wonderful over the years. No matter what happened or what difficulties we faced, we'd always stood together through it all.She paced restlessly in the hallway. After calling me several times and finding my phone switched off every time, she gritted her teeth and sent me a text message.Abigail wrote, "You hurt Noey and disfigured his face. How can you just run away? Get back here and apologize to him immediately! Are you still angry about the principal performer position? You'll never be able to stand again. What's wrong with me giving that spot to Noey?"He once saved my life, which means you owe him one too. I honestly don't know what you're thinking!"Just as she was furiously typing, a scruffy, bearded man suddenly appeared in the hospital hallway. Sneaking around while no one was paying atten

Abigail said over the phone, "Honey, I'll be entertaining clients late tonight. Go to sleep first. Don't wait up for me."The next second, Noah sent me a photo of Abigail's back as she showered. My heart, which was already deeply wounded, started bleeding all over again.Holding back my tears, I calmly began packing my luggage. At 7:00 am tomorrow, Mom would be picking me up at the airport.Looking around the home I'd lived in for ten years, I realized I no longer felt the slightest bit of attachment.Early the next morning, I left for the airport just before 5:00 am. I wanted to get away from this home as quickly as possible. While I waited for Mom at the stairwell of the airport, a familiar voice suddenly came from behind me. "Lorne, so you really were pretending to be blind."My heart skipped a beat as I turned around. It was Noah.Dropping his disguise, he kicked my wheelchair and sneered. "Tsk. Don't tell me you're pretending to be crippled too?"Seeing me gripping the ar

Abigail's voice suddenly rose several octaves. "Have you lost your mind, Noah? Why didn't you catch it? Do you have any idea how precious that emerald pendant was?"That was probably the first time Abigail had ever yelled at him. Tears immediately welled up in Noah's eyes.He defended himself, "It wasn't me! Lorne did it on purpose! If he didn't want to lend it to me, then fine. Why are you blaming me?"I stared ahead with lifeless eyes and asked curiously, "Hmm? What happened?"Perhaps Abigail had forgotten what kind of man I was. I'd rather ruin something than let my enemy have the satisfaction of getting something from me. If Abigail wanted to take my pendant from me against my will, I'd rather smash it than let Noah have it!Grinding her teeth, Abigail shouted at Noah, "Lorne is blind! Are you blind too? Why didn't you catch it?"Noah's aggrieved expression barely concealed the anger he was trying to suppress. But the moment he heard that I was blind, a trace of delight appea
