Chapter 2

Author: Cryo
My original self had dragged his injured body all the way to the lab to clone me.

Five hours left to live. My wounds had finally healed, and my organs had regenerated.

I had to finish what my original self had asked me to do before I ran out of time.

But Sophie blocked my path, her face cold and expressionless. "You're not going anywhere. I still need to harvest your organs for Adrian's daughter later."

I refused her outright. "I can't help you anymore. If you take any more organs from me now, I'll die."

I only had these final hours, and there were things I had to do. I couldn't die before accomplishing them.

Sophie's eyes grew distant. "Marcus, do you hate me that much? Is that why you won't help me anymore?"

Adrian wheeled himself out of the hospital room, his face pale. "Listen, I know Sophie and I... we were drunk. Nothing really happened between us. Please, I'm begging you—save my daughter. She's been sickly since birth. She needs healthy, strong organs."

Sophie grabbed my hand desperately. "You're not going anywhere. You have to atone for what you did to Adrian. That's not negotiable."

She had me locked in the basement of her private hospital.

My chest tightened with pain—the same ache my original self must have felt, the one he'd never truly given up on Sophie. Why did he still hurt over someone he'd stopped loving?

I escaped from Sophie's hospital.

At the wedding dress shop, I picked up the dress and suit my original self had personally designed. He'd embroidered both their names on it, along with the date they first met. Before he died, he'd made me promise: I had to marry Sophie in these clothes.

Sophie had always stalled when he asked about marriage. I'd never had a chance to come pick them up because she kept me locked up.

I brought the wedding dress and suit back home.

I also prepared six months' worth of meals for Sophie—homemade dishes and restaurant orders from her favorite places. My original self had insisted I do this before I left. He knew she wouldn't eat properly after he was gone. He wanted to give her time to adjust.

As I was finishing up, Sophie and Adrian came home.

Sophie's face went cold the moment she saw me. "You escaped!"

She spotted the clothes bag in my hands. "What's that?"

I quickly pulled it back. "It's none of your business."

Adrian, still in his wheelchair, suddenly spoke. "Marcus, now that you're here, I have something to tell you. Sophie accidentally found out she's pregnant—with my child. You don't mind, right?"

Sophie's eyes flashed with panic.

"The pregnancy wasn't planned, but the doctor says my body isn't healthy enough for an abortion. Marcus, don't worry—the child can call you Dad."

My chest suddenly ached so badly I nearly stumbled. I didn't understand how my original self could have loved a woman like this.

I forced a smile. "Sure."

But Sophie's expression shifted immediately. "Why are you talking like that? Like you're upset with me?

"I didn't plan to get pregnant. But we've both been unfair to Adrian, so I want to make it up to him. We'll have to postpone our wedding. Once I have the baby, we can get married then."

Seven years. My original self had waited seven years for marriage. Every time he'd brought it up, she'd always found an excuse.

I laughed coldly. "You never actually wanted to marry me, did you? Not really. You still have feelings for Adrian."

Sophie's eyes widened. "What are you talking about? What happened between Adrian and I... it was just an accident."

I didn't respond. Instead, I grabbed the wedding dress and walked out, dumping it straight into the garbage.

It wasn't fair to my original self.

A woman like this didn't deserve him.

Sophie followed me outside.

"What did you just throw away?" She grabbed my arm. "Don't be mad. I just feel like we both owe Adrian an apology, so I want to make things right for him."

Disgust twisted through me, followed by another sharp pain in my chest.

I pulled my arm away. I was about to say something when Adrian came outside, holding his stomach.

"Sophie... my stomach hurts so much."

Sophie immediately turned back to him. "What's wrong?"

"I don't know... my organs feel like they're in agony. Did something go wrong with the transplant?"

I immediately saw through his act. Over the years, he'd used this exact trick to slander both my original self and me countless times.

Sophie tore open the bag immediately and found the wedding dress and tuxedo inside. She burst into wails."Marcus, I'm a monster. You wanted to marry me so many times, and I kept putting you off. I was so wrong."The housekeeper walked over to the refrigerator and opened it."Sir left so many meals for you in the fridge. And today, a restaurant sent food over too. They said Sir had pre-ordered it—because he knew you don't know how to cook and was afraid you'd go hungry."I had always been the one to take care of Sophie, to cook for her. So before I died, I made sure to instruct my clone to prepare meals for her before his time ran out. At least that would give her a transition period—because I knew that once I was gone, she wouldn't eat properly.Sophie crawled over to the fridge and pulled out a food container. A sticky note was attached to it: "No matter what happens, remember to eat."Her tears splashed onto the container, and the frost melted on contact. It was just like the

I was moved that my clone could speak those words for me. But he was already gone. I would never get to say thank you.Sophie's face twisted in agony. She clutched her chest."I was wrong, Marcus. I want to see you. I never even got to see you one last time—it hurts so much."The officer put his phone away and told her, "What you did to the clone over the past five years was illegal. And you've caused the deaths of countless innocent people. You're coming with us to the holding cell. You'll be sentenced."But Sophie was pregnant, so they took her to the hospital instead, under strict police guard. In her hospital room, Sophie was in so much pain that she kept banging her head against the wall. She muttered under her breath, "Marcus, if I could have a second chance, I would never hurt you again."I was so angry because you stabbed Adrian and damaged his kidney. That's why I hated you."But I always knew, deep down, that I was the one in the wrong."I wanted to tell her that none

At the police station, Sophie sat with her hands cuffed, her eyes hollow and vacant. She looked like someone had drained the soul right out of her. I had no idea what was going through her mind at that moment. The officer told her, "Your boyfriend, Marcus—the one who just died—was a clone. Your real boyfriend was stabbed to death by Adrian five years ago."Back then, Marcus and Adrian got into a fight. You were so busy rushing Adrian to the hospital that you didn't even notice Marcus was hurt too."Before he died, Marcus went to his lab and cloned himself. His original body is still preserved in the lab, frozen."Those words finally got a reaction out of Sophie. Her eyes turned bloodshot."Take me to him. I need to see him."I wanted to ask her—what's the point? I'm already dead. The officers took her to the station morgue. My body lay there. Even though it had been frozen for five years, my face and body had deteriorated, twisted beyond recognition. The only thing still intact

"How could this happen? Someone, get a doctor in here—now!" Sophie yelled.Adrian was rushed into the ER. But the doctor came back out almost immediately and told Sophie, "This is bizarre. His organs are completely gone. His abdominal cavity is empty."Sophie's pupils contracted in shock."Why... why did everyone end up like this?""Miss Ryder, I think you need to find somewhere to hide. With everything that's happened, the police are definitely going to come looking for you."Sophie scrambled to her feet in terror. As she ran out, she kept muttering under her breath, "Marcus, is this your revenge? Why is all of this happening?"And honestly? In a way, it probably was my revenge. Though I never could have pulled it off without my clone helping me. Back then, I never imagined that Sophie would become so unhinged.Sophie rushed home. There was still a pool of blood on the floor—the clone's blood. She clutched her mouth and sobbed."Why did everything have to end up like this?"

When the clone died, all the organs he'd previously given away would disappear.Sophie had only one hour left before the organs she'd transplanted into Adrian would vanish. But this wasn't the biggest problem. Every person who'd bought organs from Sophie and received my clone's organs was already showing symptoms.Sophie slapped Adrian hard across the face."Were you faking the whole time?"Tell me—were you faking earlier!"You just wanted me to hurt Marcus, didn't you!"Now I could finally see it. Sometimes I wondered if Sophie was deliberately playing dumb. She'd always known what kind of person Adrian was. Yet she kept choosing to believe in him, over and over again.Adrian's face flushed red from the slap. He whimpered, "Sophie, I'm confused. I don't understand what you're saying. I wasn't faking."Sophie's tears fell uncontrollably. She turned to look at my clone's body and said quietly, "Marcus, I'm sorry."It had been so long since I'd heard her say my name so gently.

Third-Person POVSophie's eyes went wide. She stared at the glowing text on the clone's collarbone. The words were exactly what her assistant had read aloud."How is this possible?" Sophie's lips trembled. She shoved Marcus roughly. "Stop playing dead, Marcus! Wake up! Wake up!"But the clone's body fell with a dull thud onto the floor. Blood poured from his open abdomen, streaming across the tiles. His eyes remained shut, his lips pale. The assistant's face went white. She bent down to check for a pulse, then collapsed backward onto the ground."Miss... he's... he's gone.""No... impossible!" Sophie dropped to her knees and crawled toward the clone's body."Don't scare me like this, Marcus."When she touched his body, she recoiled in shock. It was already ice-cold.Death came too fast. A normal human's body wouldn't cool this quickly."Call a doctor! Hurry!"Sophie's composure shattered completely. She rushed the clone's body to her private hospital, her hands shaking.M
