Chapter 1

Dawn had just broken on the horizon.

My wife, Elena Clifford, leaned against the headboard of our large bed in our bedroom as she scrolled through her phone, occasionally chuckling to herself.

I lay next to her. I couldn't stay awake any longer. My eyes had just fluttered close when Elena kicked me awake.

"Are you a pig? Your loud snoring's disturbing my peace and quiet. Put on the device."

Elena grabbed the anti-snoring device from the bedside cabinet and threw it at my face.

Although I didn't snore, I was forced to wear the device because Elena was mentally weak and suffered from nyctophobia.

I jolted fully awake when I thought about the video I had received last night and hurled the device to the floor. I had planned to confront her the next day because I was too exhausted, but at that moment, I realized that I couldn't wait another second longer.

"Let's get a divorce. You can force someone else to wear this stupid thing. I'm done."

Elena finally placed her phone down. She frowned and asked, "You want to get a divorce just because I'm annoyed by your loud snores? Don't you know that I'm mentally weak, Thomas?"

My loud snores? What a joke.

In the past, I had also believed that I snored loudly. In fact, I had even dropped by the hospital to get it checked out.

"You might as well stop breathing if your snores are considered loud," the doctor said.

Even so, I had worn the anti-snoring device whenever I slept because I wanted to provide Elena with the perfect sleeping environment.

I brandished my phone at her and demanded, "Are you truly mentally weak? Or are you just weak when it comes to me?"

A hint of panic flickered across Elena's face. "Music can help a person fall asleep. How can you possibly compare your snoring with Chris' guitar-playing?"

I scoffed. "Can that out-of-tune melody really be considered music?" I thought to myself.

From Elena's perspective, she never had an issue with the sounds around her. The only thing that she took offense at was the person who was making those sounds.

"Great! I'll vacate my position for him then. You can fall asleep to his wonderful music every night from now on."

Elena finally reached the end of her patience. She slammed her phone down on the bedside cabinet and crossed her arms over her chest. "Is it so wrong for me to want a good night's rest when I work myself to the bone when I'm away from home?

"You should find a job if you have nothing better to do, Thomas. Don't you dare complain when you're just a freeloader in this house."

She tossed the blanket aside and got off the bed. When she made it to the door, she glanced back at me and said, "Oh, I almost forgot. You were left in the dust a long time ago."

My heart felt as if it had been struck by a heavy blow at that moment, but the pain cleared my mind.

I finally understood Elena's true character, the woman whom I had loved with all my heart—for whom I had given everything up.

I was determined to divorce her and restart my career.

I did everything that the Cliffords asked of me in the past few years. Although I had maintained my features and my figure, my current condition was far from enough. I wanted to return to my glory days.

Thus, I began dropping by the gym every day.

My phone chimed when I was taking a break.

It was Elena.

She hadn't shown her face ever since I told her that I wanted a divorce.

"Mom's on vacation now, Thomas. Don't forget to stop by her house to feed her dog. Don't you dare miss a single meal. Mom will weigh the dog when she's back."

I couldn't hold myself back anymore and cursed aloud for the first time as I read Elena's message. "Fuck off!"

Noticing that I was in a foul mood, my coach assumed that I was frustrated over the results of my training. He sat next to me and said with a smile, "This is what working out is like, Tom. It's very boring, but you have to stay disciplined. But…"

He pointed at a small, private room before continuing, "If you have a girlfriend, you can try out a couple's workout. It's way more fun!"

A bald, old man who was dressed in a suit emerged from the hall five minutes after Chris made the call. The man had an unfamiliar face.I had never seen him in my life, but since he had been invited to join Johnson Group's annual company banquet, he was probably a close relative. The Cliffords immediately surrounded him when they spotted him. Their tones were colored with arrogance as they bombarded him with complaints.Mr. Johnson scrutinized me with his tiny eyes. "Where did this brat come from? How dare he stir up trouble at Johnson Group's annual company banquet? Get out of my sight now."Just then, my phone chimed, notifying me that the countdown was over.Jessica would arrive any second now.I refused to appear in such a pathetic state before her.I swiftly dialed the hotel manager's number and bolted toward the dressing room.I had no doubt that, from Elena's and the others' perspectives, I looked like I was running away with my tail between my legs.…Dad ecstaticall

In the end, I couldn't get a glimpse of "Mr. Johnson"'s face. But to be honest, I wasn't too worried about whatever scheme Elena was cooking up.They could have their fun until the truth came to light.I was in the undisputed first place after the music competition program was broadcast. My name dominated the trending charts."It's been years since Thomas showed his face on stage, but he sure came back with a bang!""No one does it like Thomas does. He's just in a league of his own with his looks and his voice. I just can't figure out why he decided to retire all those years ago.""I heard that he got married to a wealthy woman."Meanwhile, articles about Chris were relegated to columns that nobody paid attention to in the entertainment news.I knew that Elena must be pulling out all the stops to promote Chris to their so-called connection in the Johnson family. However, whatever they were up to had nothing to do with me because I had regained my explosive popularity.Of cour

"Thomas!" Elena exclaimed.I was just about to apologize when I realized just who I had collided with.My good mood soured in an instant. What rotten luck to run into her here of all places.I ignored Elena and prepared to leave, but she chased after me. Surprise flickered in her eyes as she gave me a once-over.I felt repulsed by her gaze.It turned out that men weren't the only ones who shot salacious looks at other people. It was even more disgusting when women did the same thing."I want you to give up your spot to Chris," she said. "I've already convinced the judges. All you have to do is nod. Of course, I'll compensate you handsomely if you agree."The corners of her lips curled up into a smile. "You must have spent quite a pretty penny on your outfit. Do you even have enough money to eat?"I was just about to make a retort when I glimpsed Jessica walking toward us from the end of the hallway out of the corner of my eye.I suddenly didn't feel like talking anymore.I wa

The man in the front passenger seat looked back at me.It was Gravity Tech's Caleb Batford.I stared at him in confusion after I snapped back to my senses.Caleb nervously ran a hand through his hair before saying, "To be honest with you, I've wanted to speak with you in private for a long time now, Mr. Johnson. But I didn't get a chance to do so because you've been lying low for the past few years. I didn't expect to run into you today."I wondered if our meeting was truly pure coincidence.Since I had been stuck in my marriage for such a long time, I knew that I needed help if I wanted to start over. Naturally, I wouldn't turn away anyone who sought me out of their own volition.…The car slowed to a stop in front of a hotel. One of the hotel staff members led Caleb and me to a private booth. A teacup came flying at me the moment I stepped through the door."How dare you force me to pick you up, you damned brat?"The voice belonged to none other than Dad.Dad had nearly en

It didn't take long before Elena signed the divorce agreement. She also hired someone who managed to find a way to let us skip the cooldown period. It was clear that she wanted to finalize the divorce as soon as possible.I couldn't shake the feeling that her sudden change of heart was a little strange, but I didn't spend too much time thinking about it.I had a shoot scheduled on the day that we were supposed to process the divorce agreement, so I arrived at the courthouse a few minutes late.Elena had bombarded my phone with a barrage of messages. Her tone was both insulting and smug."Don't tell me that you changed your mind about getting a divorce, Thomas? I knew that you wouldn't leave me. You love me so much. How could you bear to leave my side?"She stared at me in disbelief when I appeared before her.I had finally seen Elena for who she truly was during this period of time. She was an utterly despicable person. She wanted me to grovel at her feet before we finalized the
