Orientation kept me busy all through my first week.

Picking up my academy pin, activating my dorm access, checking on my scholarship application at the registrar's office.

I did all of it alone.

Just as I had for 18 years. Eating alone, studying alone, choosing a school alone.

Back before the pack's coming-of-age trial, my mother had made Leanna three different balanced meals a day.

I asked why she hadn't made any for me.

She looked taken aback for a second.

"You've always been independent, Aurora... I thought you didn't like having everything planned for you.

"I can make those meals for you too, if you'd like."

And she did.

Better than Leanna's, even.

What stayed with me was the relief on her face.

She probably thought the problem was solved.

But the problem was never the meals.

The problem was that if I didn't bring something up, they didn't think of me.

If I didn't say it hurt, they assumed nothing hurt.

If I didn't hold out my hand, they assumed I didn't need anything.

It was always like this.

One night, my comm crystal wouldn't stop buzzing.

My mother had posted a set of photos in the pack chat.

She couldn't stop worrying about Leanna, so she had gone all the way to Imperial University with her.

The photos showed the university's grand gates up north, the dazzling northern lights, and the library said to have the largest collection in the Empire.

The last was a full-length shot of Leanna standing outside her dorm room.

"Imperial University really is something! It lives up to its reputation!"

"I hear the campus is huge, so there's a lot of walking. Luckily, Reid knows people there. They've approved a carriage for Leanna to use on campus."

My father answered instantly.

"All arranged. The carriage arrives tomorrow. Leanna won't have to tire herself out."

I scrolled through all of it and sat staring at the crystal for half an hour.

Finally, the message I'd been waiting for arrived.

"Aurora should have gotten there by now, right?"

It was my mother who asked.

"Aurora, how is it over there? Are you settling in?"

Before I could answer, my father cut in.

"Aurora never gives anyone trouble. She'll be fine."

And then they went back to talking about Leanna.

Three messages. That was all they had to say about me.

I knew they hadn't meant to hurt me.

They just didn't think they needed to check on me.

I'd always taken care of everything myself. They were so used to it that they thought I didn't need anyone to look after me.

My roommate, Mia Bennett, watched me stare blankly at the crystal. Finally, she asked, "Aurora, didn't your family come with you? I haven't seen anyone these last few days."

"No. They're with my sister."

"Where does she go?"

"Imperial University."

Mia's hands went still.

"Oh... that's where the best of the best go.

"But our academy is good too. The Empire's top ten healers all graduated from here."

I smiled and didn't answer.

The second week, the academy ran a three-day trial for first-years.

We had to go into the Moonlight Forest near campus to identify and collect herbs.

The weather in the South was hot and muggy, and I wasn't used to it.

By that afternoon, I was sick from the heat and badly dehydrated.

I crouched in the shade of a tree, unable to stop throwing up. My vision blurred.

A teaching assistant handed me a potion and bundled me straight onto the bus back to campus.

Under the cool lights of the campus clinic's treatment room, the healer used ice to bring my temperature down.

"Aurora, why can't I reach your emergency contact?

"You're severely dehydrated. Our policy requires me to let your family know what's happened."

I looked up at the ceiling, shook my head, and answered quietly, "They're busy."

While I rested, I scrolled numbly through the messages on my crystal.

My mother had posted again in the pack chat.

All photos of Leanna.

In the photos, Leanna looked like she was on top of the world, a longsword in her hand and the last light of sunset behind her.

That night, before I shut the crystal off, I checked the chat one last time.

Leanna was complaining that the dinners at Imperial University weren't to her taste.

My father immediately posted a screenshot of a transfer. A full 5,000 gold coins.

"Go eat somewhere good. Don't settle for less."

Then he posted another one.

He'd sent 2,000 gold coins to my account too.

"Aurora, tell your mother and me if you run short."

It wasn't that they didn't love me at all. They just gave me so little compared with Leanna.

So little that they often forgot about me altogether.

Then they launched into an excited discussion about next month's Founding Day.

They told Leanna she had to come home for it and tell the pack's pups how she'd gotten into Imperial University.

Nobody mentioned me again.

I put the crystal beside my pillow and turned off the light.

Moonlight came through the gap in the curtains and fell across my bed.

I'd picked this bed. I'd come to this city on my own.

Nobody saw me off. Nobody picked me up. Nobody was waiting at the other end.

But at least here, nobody compared me to anyone.

A day later, my father called."Aurora."He said my name, then fell silent for a long time."Your mother had me watch that segment. The things you said, I..."He didn't finish.I heard a faint catch in his voice on the other end.I was quiet for a moment."Dad, do you know which school I'm at now?"He murmured in agreement.I went on. "My acceptance letter sat on the coffee table for 40 days. Did you ever see it?"He didn't answer."That day you said there was no room in the carriage and told me to get to school on my own."Then your family of three went north, and I came south by myself."Again I heard him choke up, more clearly this time.A long silence passed before he spoke again."I'm sorry."It was the first time he'd ever said those words to me.And then he said it again. "I'm sorry."I held the crystal as a draft swept down the hallway, making my eyes sting."All right."That was my answer. The next day, I was changing the dressings on the girl I'd rescued, Ella Brooks. Her par

After that, my days at school filled up with work again. Now that we were certified healers, Mia and I could intern at clinics designated by the academy. We were assigned to the Blackrock Pack's healing clinic.A couple rushed in one afternoon, carrying a screaming little girl."Please, someone help my daughter! There was a fire at our house! She's burned!"We gathered around her. She had only a palm-sized burn on her lower leg. Nothing serious. As we applied medicine and bandaged the burn, the girl's mother sighed with relief. "Thank the Moon Goddess. It's only a small burn."And where has Ella run off to? Is this how she looks after her sister? I'll deal with her when we get home."The little girl started crying harder."Mommy! Ella! Ella's still in the house! She pushed me out!"I didn't notice how her parents reacted. All I knew was that my head was ringing.I grabbed a blanket off one of the beds and was out the door before my mind caught up.I ran up the street. The fire wasn't f

Looking for me for so long.Right. None of them had ever opened my acceptance letter. So my family didn't even know which school I was at. Only that I was somewhere in the South."So how did you find this place?""I saw the photo and followed the reposts back to the first person who shared it."I looked at her without saying anything. She'd traced the photo through who knew how many reposts, all the way back to the first person who'd shared it.She really had been looking. But all that effort struck me as a little ridiculous."If you'd paid attention to me even once in the last 18 years, you wouldn't have had to."Her lips moved, but nothing came out.Curious students were peeking out of the other rooms. I stepped aside to let Leanna in.She came in and handed me the paper bag."I brought you something to eat. Honey cakes. You used to love them.""I never liked them. You did."At home, they only ever bought what Leanna liked.I never got a choice.Leanna froze.I poured her a glass of

When Susanna told me my photo had been selected, Mia and I were celebrating passing the healer certification exam.We were the only two students in our first-year class who had passed.Mia threw her arms around me and jumped up and down."Aurora, you're amazing!""We're both amazing."The photo had been shortlisted for a regional photography award in the South.During the break, I'd been exploring the South when I found myself on an old street.I came across a little werewolf girl standing in a corner. She stood where light met shadow, watching longingly as her parents and older sister played together. In the light, a happy family of three. In the shadows, one girl all alone. One step forward and she would have been in the light. But she stayed where she was, twisting her fingers nervously.I saw myself in her.So I pressed the shutter button before I could stop myself. After I got the girl's permission, I submitted that photo to the competition.Susanna looked at my photo and patted m

In the living room, Reid was teaching Leanna a few combat techniques.Evelyn sounded a little flustered. "Reid, Aurora... she deleted me!""What?"Reid froze mid-movement, as if he hadn't understood her.Evelyn handed him the crystal. He stared at the message for five seconds, then frowned.Reid pulled out his own crystal, found Aurora's number, and called. But the call wouldn't connect.Leanna came over with her crystal, her face pale."Aurora left both the family chat and the pack chat."Evelyn's expression shifted from confusion to disbelief, then panic. But the panic only lasted a few seconds. Then she pressed her lips together and muttered, "What's gotten into that girl now?"She seemed to be speaking to Reid and Leanna as much as to herself. "She probably deleted us by accident. She'll add us back in a couple of days."Reid shook his head too."She's been like this since she was little. Never could just come out and say what she wants."Leanna said nothing, but worry flickered in

On the last day of finals, my mother called out of nowhere."Aurora, what day are you coming home?""I'm not."Two seconds of silence."You didn't come back for Founding Day either. Now you're skipping the Winter Rite too?""I'm at a critical stage with a formula I'm developing. My advisor wants me to stay and run some experiments."There was no formula. And Nathan hadn't asked me to stay.My mother sounded a little disappointed. "But I haven't seen you in so long, and the Winter Rite is the most important day of the year for the pack."Could you talk to your advisor about it?""This formula is important. It directly affects my grade.""All right, then."My mother sighed. "I'll say a blessing for you at home."I didn't answer.Even if I had gone home, they would have looked right through me.Next to Leanna, I'd never even catch their eye. After finals, most of the campus emptied out.Mia went home too, and the room was mine alone. But I liked the quiet. No comparisons.
