Chapter 1

Author: Goodtale
I listened to the video game kill sounds coming through my phone, followed by the cold, relentless tone of a disconnected call. My whole body trembled with panic.

I was a chemical restoration specialist.

To make it easier to work on certain restoration projects, I had converted a room in my house into a private workshop. It contained hazardous chemical reagents that I had properly registered and stored in compliance with safety regulations.

I did not have my mother-in-law's or my sister-in-law, Jeannie Lloyd's, contact information, so my only option was to keep calling my husband, Chester Lloyd.

I called him more than a dozen times in a row. Every single time, he hung up on me. With no other choice, I immediately hailed a cab from my parents' house and urged the driver to turn around and head back.

Throughout the ride, I kept refreshing Jeannie's livestream.

They were already live. The moment I saw what was happening, my hands began to shake uncontrollably.

On the screen, the workshop door that I had securely locked was bent out of shape. The lock hung uselessly from the damaged door, and a hammer covered in wood shavings lay on the floor.

The number of viewers was climbing rapidly.

Jeannie greeted her audience excitedly. "If you just joined us, don't forget to follow my channel! If you like what you see, hit that like button. Let me see how many people are watching!"

When I saw that they had already broken into my workshop, my legs nearly gave out.

All I could do was frantically type warnings into the live chat.

[Don't touch anything in there! Those are hazardous chemicals!]

However, the livestream already had well over a hundred thousand viewers. Thousands of comments flew across the screen, and mine disappeared into the flood almost as soon as I sent them.

Jeannie was too busy interacting with her followers to notice my warnings. There was nothing I could do but watch helplessly as my mother-in-law rummaged through my workbench.

On the screen, she ripped the warning labels off my cabinets. Then she reached into the back and pulled out a specially designed, light-resistant glass bottle.

"Everyone, take a look at this expensive skincare essence my good-for-nothing daughter-in-law bought!

"This tiny little bottle costs over a thousand dollars!

"She has nothing better to do than waste her time and money on all this beauty nonsense!

"If she spent half as much time taking care of my son, she might actually be useful!

"Today, I'm going to teach her who really runs this household!"

Jeannie followed close behind with her phone, watching the viewer count soar as donation alerts kept popping up. She was grinning from ear to ear.

"Everyone, you get to decide what happens to this ridiculously expensive essence!

"If you want to see my mom dump it, send us some gifts! The bigger the donations, the harsher the punishment!"

Watching from the other side of the screen, I could barely hold back my tears as their cruel words rang in my ears.

Back when Chester and I were dating, he had warned me that his mother was domineering and controlling. However, he had repeatedly assured me that after we married, we would live our own lives and rarely have to deal with each other.

I believed him.

At first, my mother-in-law had been reasonably polite to me. However, everything changed when she learned how much money I spent on expensive restoration materials for my work. From that moment on, she strongly opposed me buying any more.

In her eyes, a married woman should learn to live frugally and spend her money on her family and husband instead of wasting it on herself.

She was always saying that since I had married into their family, I should put my husband and household first and fulfill my duties as a wife.

To her, all those little bottles and jars were nothing but useless luxuries. Spending money on them made me vain, wasteful and utterly irresponsible.

At first, I dismissed her attitude as nothing more than outdated thinking from an older generation. I patiently explained to her, time and time again, that those materials were essential to my work.

However, as far as my mother-in-law was concerned, I was simply being disrespectful and talking back.

Time and again, she sent messages through Chester, ordering me to throw away every last bottle and jar in my workshop. Not a single one was to remain.

I stood my ground and refused to give in.

I thought she would eventually drop the matter. What I never expected was that she would take advantage of my visit to my parents' house to pull a stunt like that with Jeannie on a livestream.

"Send me an expensive gift, and you get to decide what happens to this bottle of essence!" Her words immediately sent the audience into a frenzy.

Virtual gift animations flashed across the screen as comments flooded the chat.

[Streamer, dump that thousand-dollar bottle straight into the toilet! Let's see if you're actually crazy enough to do it!]

Similar comments quickly flooded the chat, and more and more viewers joined in the taunting.

Seeing the donation alerts pop up one after another, Jeannie agreed without a second thought.

Citing Chester's online spread of false information, which had caused serious public backlash and severely damaged the company's reputation, his employer announced that he had been fired.Soon afterward, several major short-video platforms released their own statements.Chester's account was permanently banned for deliberately spreading false information and inciting online harassment.Jeannie's livestream account, which she had originally created to make money, was also permanently shut down for violating platform rules by mishandling dangerous substances. The online harassment campaign Chester had so carefully planned had turned into a raging fire that burned him to ashes. One month later, the court officially heard my lawsuit seeking compensation.Chester appeared as the defendant. In just a month, he had become almost unrecognizable. He had lost so much weight that his clothes hung loosely on his frame. His hair was a mess, his eyes were sunken and his clothes were wrinkled.

The livestreamers surrounding me fell silent for a moment. They stared at the USB drive in my hand like starving wolves eyeing a piece of meat.Chester's expression changed. A flicker of panic flashed across his eyes, but he quickly started shouting, trying to drown me out."Don't listen to her lies! She is a fraud!"She is just trying to buy time and shirk responsibility!"She has no evidence! The important thing is to make her pay for the medical bills and save those two women!"I ignored his shouting completely. Looking straight into the nearest camera, I spoke in a calm, steady voice, making sure every word was captured."In ten minutes, I will upload all the evidence online."Then you can judge for yourselves who is telling the truth."With that, I pushed past the people blocking my way and walked straight out of the company building.Chester tried to grab me, but several security guards held him back.I walked to the roadside, hailed a taxi, and headed to an internet ca

Three days later, Chester was finally at the end of his rope. The hospital sent him bill after bill, day after day.Treating severe chemical burns cost a fortune, and every day his mother and Jeannie spent in intensive care added thousands of dollars to the bill. The two hundred thousand dollars needed for surgery was a bottomless pit that drained every last cent of Chester's savings. Then, my lawsuit arrived. The additional one hundred and fifty thousand dollars in damages made his situation even worse. He had no money left, but he refused to accept defeat. So, he decided to resort to the dirtiest trick he could think of: using public opinion to pressure me into giving in.That morning, I had just clocked in at work when a coworker hurried over, looking panicked, with her phone in her hand."Xena, look at this! Is that your husband on the local forum?"I took the phone from her.A sensational post had appeared simultaneously on the city's biggest local forum and several majo

Half an hour later, I was escorted into a conference room at the police station.Chester was already sitting inside with his head buried in his hands. He looked restless and agitated. The moment he saw me enter, he shot to his feet, ready to start shouting insults, but the officer behind him immediately barked an order."Sit down! Behave yourself!"The officer in charge was holding a freshly printed report summarizing the findings of the investigation. He slapped it firmly onto the table."We've completed our investigation."His voice rang through the room, leaving no room for argument."The injured parties, Rebecca Zeller and Jeannie Lloyd, unlawfully entered a restricted area of the property without the owner's permission."They also used force to break the door lock and deliberately damaged another person's property."Despite being explicitly informed that the substance was highly concentrated sulfuric acid and receiving a clear warning about the danger, the injured parties

The interrogation room at the police station was awash in harsh, pale light.I sat in a metal chair, my expression calm.Through the wall, I could still faintly hear Chester roaring in the next room. He was furiously insisting to the police that I had deliberately tried to murder his mother and sister.According to him, because I had a poor relationship with my mother-in-law, I had deliberately filled a cosmetic bottle with highly concentrated sulfuric acid and set a trap, waiting for them to fall into it.Two police officers sat across from me and switched on their body cameras. The older officer opened his notebook, his tone stern."Xena Yates, Chester Lloyd in the next room and the injured women at the hospital have all accused you of deliberately causing harm to them."Why were you keeping highly concentrated industrial sulfuric acid in your home? Do you understand how dangerous that is?"Meeting the officer's scrutinizing gaze, I began laying out the facts in a clear, order

Jeannie was slumped beside the bathtub, both hands pressed over her eyes as she let out a heart-wrenching scream."My eyes! I can't see! It hurts! It hurts so much!"Chester's legs gave out beneath him and he collapsed onto the floor. He reached out to help his mother, but he had no idea where he could touch her. Corrosive acid covered her body and even the slightest contact sent her into another fit of agonized screaming."Mom! What happened to you? Please, don't scare me like this!" Chester burst into tears. Then he turned toward me and roared, "What are you just standing there for? Help them!"I stood outside the bathroom without stepping even half a foot inside. I knew exactly how dangerous highly concentrated industrial sulfuric acid could be.Without proper protective equipment, rushing in would only risk causing more injuries.I pulled out my phone and immediately called 911. I calmly explained the situation to the dispatcher."This is Unit 1201, Building 8, Block 3. Ther
