Chapter 2

Author: Venmo Me 50
In a modest hospital ward, Artie held my hand and said to me, “Mom, if I die, could you please not tell Dad right away? He’s a great hero. I don’t want him to be upset.”

Four days ago, my son had an asthma attack.

In a panic, I grabbed Logan as he was heading out and begged him to drive Artie to the hospital.

His mind, though, was preoccupied with picking up Jenny Horne and her child, and he simply shook off my hands.

“Do you take me for a fool, Willow Gray? Our son’s asthma isn’t something new. It’s been going on for ages. He’ll be fine after taking his medicine. He’s not going to die.

“Jenny is waiting for me at the park so I can take her and her son boating. Stop bothering me.”

With that, he walked away without looking back.

Left all alone, I wept as I pleaded with everyone in the military compound, begging anyone I could find to take my child to the hospital.

But it was too late.

Artie, whom I had lovingly raised for five years, left me forever, just before he was about to start school.

That day, I knelt before the doctors many times and shed countless tears.

None of it could make my son open his eyes or call me “Mom” one last time.

At that thought, I clenched the death certificate in my hand as my heart ached with a cold, piercing pain.

Forcing back the sting in my eyes, I turned to leave.

Without warning, Logan grabbed my arm.

“What’s the matter? Feeling guilty now?”

He sneered and snatched the death certificate from my hand.

“Let’s see what excuse you’ve cooked up this time!”

I froze. I immediately realized I had to get it back.

Alas, Logan had already unfolded the paper.

The moment he saw our son’s name on the certificate, all the color drained from his face.

He read it over seven times, carefully checking every word.

At last, his gaze finally settled on the section for the certifying authority that was still blank, pending the medical director’s signature.

Logan’s fury exploded instantly.

“Is this any way for a mother to behave?

“You actually forged your own son’s death certificate just to get my attention? You crazy woman!”

His eyes turned bloodshot as he delivered a savage kick to my chest.

Unable to brace myself, I was knocked to the ground, and my suitcase burst open as everything spilled across the floor.

Artie’s favorite toy, a tin frog, landed right at Logan’s feet.

I frantically reached out to retrieve my son’s last memento, but the enraged man had already raised his foot.

Without thinking, I quickly stretched my hand over to the toy, only for his hard leather boot to crush down on my left hand.

The excruciating pain stole my breath.

Logan instinctively took two steps back, but for the briefest moment, a flash of pity crossed his eyes.

Then he looked at the death certificate in his hand again and scoffed.

“Willow, don’t think I’ll forgive you for using our son to get my attention.

“Go home. I don’t want to see you again!”

He ripped the death certificate into tiny pieces.

I paid him no heed. A chill crept uncontrollably into my heart as I merely stared blankly at the tin frog in my hand, one corner of which had already broken off.

Leaving the hospital, I carried with me two documents.

One was the newly completed death certificate, while the other was the application for Artie’s cremation.

I only had two days left till I fulfilled my son’s final wishes.

The next day, I stayed home.

I sat in the living room, all focused on sewing clothes for my son.

Logan was a regimental commander, often admonishing Artie and me to be frugal and not to live beyond our means.

Although Artie was too young to understand, he knew his father was a great hero who protected our country, so he had never made any demands of Logan or me.

The rain poured heavier, but the figure at the gate refused to leave.Logan’s heart-wrenching cries echoed through the night alongside the sound of the rain, yet I did not yield in the slightest.Whatever I had felt for him had already been completely worn away the moment our son left this world. In the days that followed, he stayed far outside the courtyard, watching the mourning hall from a distance as he cried.Even when the neighbors tried to speak for him, I never let him take a single step closer.“Artie, I will fulfill your last wish.”I cut down the plum tree in the yard and threw it out by the roadside in front of Logan. The fruit was scattered across the ground. With bloodshot eyes, Logan left this place that very night.Half a year later. From the school in the countryside came the clear sound of children reciting, “The gingham dog and the calico cat, side by side on the table sat…”Following the familiar voice, Logan looked up and saw me standing at the podium wit

Back inside, Logan sat with his back against the door. The faintest trace of guilt that had just surfaced in him disappeared in an instant. He clutched his head in disbelief. He couldn’t believe he had, for a woman like that, kept hurting his wife and child over and over again. He lowered his head and stayed silent, like a stone statue, completely buried under the weight of guilt. The next day, he packed some meat, rice, and flour into a backpack and prepared to take a ride back home when Jenny suddenly rushed out.At school, Tommy had snatched another child’s new school bag and even threatened that anyone who reported him would get their teeth knocked out.No one at this new school was going to put up with such behavior, and the other children took turns recounting the incident in detail. The teacher immediately decided that the parents must take Tommy away. The school would no longer accept him. Upon hearing this, Jenny rushed to Logan, hoping he could use his position to hus

Even inside that windowless, airless room, time had slipped away from him.Logan had already promised Tommy he would show up at the school opening ceremony. Just a brief appearance would be enough to keep the boy from being looked down upon by the other children.“Logan, it’s Tommy’s first day of school this afternoon. You said you’d take him there.”Logan pressed his aching temples. Sunlight leaked through the window crack and landed on his face, forcing him to squint. The dream he had just woken from was so beautiful he almost wanted to stay in it. The knocking that broke it, though, only irritated him.He pushed himself up, ran a dry hand over his face, and went to open the door.He was met immediately with Jenny’s pleading eyes.“Sorry, Jenny. I can’t go with you today.”She looked at him, confused and innocent.“But… you already promised Tommy today…”Logan rubbed his nose bridge and exhaled.“Artie is gone. I’m not in the mood.”A hint of displeasure flashed through J

“Willow, I really know I was wrong. Please, can you give me another chance?“I really don't want to lose you.“It was all my fault. I'm a bastard. You can hit me, curse me—whatever you want. Just don't leave, please?”Logan had always been an intensely proud man.I'd rarely seen him lower himself like this.Instead of feeling touched or sorry for him, I only found it laughable.I sighed.“Logan, I've already filed for divorce. Let's stop holding on to each other."“No! I don’t want that!”He shook his head and refused to let go of my hand.I looked at his grief with cold, detached eyes. It stirred nothing in me.The station began broadcasting that the train would soon depart.I instinctively glanced toward the platform. The moment I did, Logan grew visibly more anxious. As though he believed that if he loosened his grip for even a second, I would disappear forever.Seeing that he still refused to let go, an idea suddenly came to me.I pointed behind him and shouted, “Je

I picked up my luggage, took one last look at the home I was leaving behind, and turned away. There was only one shuttle bus running between the military compound and the train station. When we had come here, Artie sat beside me, looking everywhere with wide-eyed curiosity.Like a happy little bird, he had chattered the entire journey. Now, the ride back was unnaturally quiet.I sat in the same seat as before, with only a school bag for company on the empty seat beside me.The driver glanced at me several times through the rearview mirror. In the end, he couldn't help asking, “Heading home for something this time? Why didn't your boy come with you?”I looked at the school bag beside me and answered quietly, “He’s here.”The rumble of the engine and the screech of the tires swallowed my words. The driver kept talking.“I've driven plenty of children, but that little guy left the deepest impression on me.“He was such a lively, lovable kid. The moment he got on, he started ha

“Why? I worked so hard to earn military honors so you could have a better life. Why weren’t you happy?”I shook my head with a scoff.“A better life? What does that even mean? Have you ever asked what Artie and I truly wanted?”Logan held his gaze on me, something unfathomable flickering in his eyes. “I’ve never let either of you go without food, clothes, or a roof over your heads. What else could you possibly want?”The corners of my lips lifted faintly as I looked out to the sky beyond the door. My mind drifted for a moment.“Back when Artie and I still lived in the countryside, we had very little, even having to split a single flatbread in half. But we were content.“His favorite thing at that time was sitting with me in the yard, watching the plum tree you’d planted by the wall, and counting how many plums it bore.“Whenever he saw the plum blossoms, he’d be overjoyed for ages. He’d run after me and said that when the tree’s full of fruit, it means you’ll be coming home.
