My husband, a military colonel with whom I’d been married for ten years, was barred from entering our son’s funeral wake. Because before our son died, he made three final wishes. The first wish was not to tell his father about his death just yet, as he was afraid the news would upset him. Secondly, to cook his father’s favorite meal and let his father be there for his final birthday. Lastly, if his father were to miss his birthday, then under no circumstances—no matter what—never allow that man to appear before his grave. Even though the man’s eyes were bloodshot and his body was shaking as he cried his heart out in the torrential rain lashing outside the funeral home, I never let the man take a single step toward my son after his death. Three days earlier, after spending a whole night setting fireworks with my childhood friend and her son, Logan Pearce came home with a brand-new schoolbag. That was his idea of making up for missing our son’s birthday. The man frowned, puzzled by the tears in my eyes. “Isn’t it just one birthday? I’ll make it up to him next time, won’t I? Little did he know that our five-year-old son had already died from an asthma attack. The little boy would never live to see the first day of school.

A Father’s Farewell Denied Chapter 12
The rain poured heavier, but the figure at the gate refused to leave.Logan’s heart-wrenching cries echoed through the night alongside the sound of the rain, yet I did not yield in the slightest.Whatever I had felt for him had already been completely worn away the moment our son left this world. In the days that followed, he stayed far outside the courtyard, watching the mourning hall from a distance as he cried.Even when the neighbors tried to speak for him, I never let him take a single step closer.“Artie, I will fulfill your last wish.”I cut down the plum tree in the yard and threw it out by the roadside in front of Logan. The fruit was scattered across the ground. With bloodshot eyes, Logan left this place that very night.Half a year later. From the school in the countryside came the clear sound of children reciting, “The gingham dog and the calico cat, side by side on the table sat…”Following the familiar voice, Logan looked up and saw me standing at the podium wit

Back inside, Logan sat with his back against the door. The faintest trace of guilt that had just surfaced in him disappeared in an instant. He clutched his head in disbelief. He couldn’t believe he had, for a woman like that, kept hurting his wife and child over and over again. He lowered his head and stayed silent, like a stone statue, completely buried under the weight of guilt. The next day, he packed some meat, rice, and flour into a backpack and prepared to take a ride back home when Jenny suddenly rushed out.At school, Tommy had snatched another child’s new school bag and even threatened that anyone who reported him would get their teeth knocked out.No one at this new school was going to put up with such behavior, and the other children took turns recounting the incident in detail. The teacher immediately decided that the parents must take Tommy away. The school would no longer accept him. Upon hearing this, Jenny rushed to Logan, hoping he could use his position to hus

Even inside that windowless, airless room, time had slipped away from him.Logan had already promised Tommy he would show up at the school opening ceremony. Just a brief appearance would be enough to keep the boy from being looked down upon by the other children.“Logan, it’s Tommy’s first day of school this afternoon. You said you’d take him there.”Logan pressed his aching temples. Sunlight leaked through the window crack and landed on his face, forcing him to squint. The dream he had just woken from was so beautiful he almost wanted to stay in it. The knocking that broke it, though, only irritated him.He pushed himself up, ran a dry hand over his face, and went to open the door.He was met immediately with Jenny’s pleading eyes.“Sorry, Jenny. I can’t go with you today.”She looked at him, confused and innocent.“But… you already promised Tommy today…”Logan rubbed his nose bridge and exhaled.“Artie is gone. I’m not in the mood.”A hint of displeasure flashed through J

“Willow, I really know I was wrong. Please, can you give me another chance?“I really don't want to lose you.“It was all my fault. I'm a bastard. You can hit me, curse me—whatever you want. Just don't leave, please?”Logan had always been an intensely proud man.I'd rarely seen him lower himself like this.Instead of feeling touched or sorry for him, I only found it laughable.I sighed.“Logan, I've already filed for divorce. Let's stop holding on to each other."“No! I don’t want that!”He shook his head and refused to let go of my hand.I looked at his grief with cold, detached eyes. It stirred nothing in me.The station began broadcasting that the train would soon depart.I instinctively glanced toward the platform. The moment I did, Logan grew visibly more anxious. As though he believed that if he loosened his grip for even a second, I would disappear forever.Seeing that he still refused to let go, an idea suddenly came to me.I pointed behind him and shouted, “Je
