Chapter 2

Author: Everwind
After leaving the reception, I sent my resignation letter to my company.

The HR department sent a reply almost instantaneously.

[Are you sure you want to resign? Should I inform Ms. Quentin?]

[There’s no need to tell her.]

The HR department did not push the matter.

[Alright. It’s too late now, so you can settle all the paperwork tomorrow morning at the office.]

After responding, I went home to pack my luggage.

My phone buzzed.

Vanessa had tagged me in the four-person WhatsApp group named: Chester’s Recovery Plan.

[Have you gone off in a huff again, Joshua? Chester has been looking forward to getting married to Aria for ages. We didn’t want him to be disappointed, so we planned this fake wedding for him.]

[We were afraid you’d be sad, so we lied to you about it.]

Emery chimed in pleasantly.

[That’s right. Chester got amnesia because he saved you, you know. Don’t be so petty about this.]

Aria’s reply was short.

[Be good. We’ll have an even bigger wedding when it’s our turn.]

I had gotten such a promise countless times.

When we were supposed to go on our pre-wedding vacation, Aria had gone with Chester instead. Aria had then said she would bring me even farther abroad next time.

When she bought a new place that ended up as theirs, Aria had said she would buy an even bigger marital home for us.

I waited and waited, but all I got were crushed dreams.

I was done waiting.

With a single tap on the screen, I left the WhatsApp group.

I turned back to packing.

From under the bed, I took out a journal. It was a journal Aria had filled with memories of our relationship together.

I flipped through and found the record for the third day after Chester moved into our new house.

Worried that Chester would get the wrong idea, the three of them had thrown away the photos of me and Aria, along with souvenirs that had our names engraved on them.

All my memories with Aria had been thrown away.

Only that journal was left, hidden away in secret.

It became the cure for my suffering throughout countless difficult nights.

But I would have no use for it from that moment onward.

I dumped the journal into the trash.

When I turned around, I noticed that the roses planted out on the balcony had been swapped for Chester’s favorite sunflowers.

The originally plain walls had been plastered with stickers.

All the marks of my existence here had been subsumed by Chester, little by little

After looking through the house while packing, I realized that my items barely fit half the luggage bag.

I let out a bitter laugh.

Before I could zip up the luggage, the door opened.

Four people came in.

Chester wobbled as he was helped in by Aria.

Vanessa made sure Chester did not hit his head on the doorframe, while Emery was carrying various bags.

When they saw me, the smiles slid off their faces.

Aria let go of Chester and tried to explain things.

“Chester drank too much from his joy, so I could only help him back here.”

Chester raised his head. His tone was displeased as he said, “Hey, I’m your husband, Aria! Why are you worried about him misunderstanding things?”

After saying that, Chester made to kiss her. Instead, he stumbled into her embrace.

Aria let out a resigned chuckle.

“Alright, you drunkard. You’re the boss, okay?”

Chester let out a huff and pointed at me.

“You’ve been staying in my house for months, Joshua. It’s not so convenient for you to stay since Aria and I are married now. You should move out.”

What a joke.

Aria and I had bought that house three years ago.

I had decorated it myself.

Chester had only lived here for a few months, but he really thought it was his house.

My expression darkened, and Vanessa quickly tried to play mediator.

“It’s hard to get a place so quickly, Chester. Joshua’s so hardworking, you can consider him a housekeeper.”

Emery nodded.

“You’ll be busy after just having gotten married too, so it’ll help if he’s here helping with your household chores. Isn’t that right, Joshua?”

Aria looked at me with a challenge in her eyes.

She meant to warn me against saying what should not be said.

Everyone looked at me, waiting for me to force a smile and go along with everything as I used to.

I simply laughed.

“No need for all that trouble. I’m leaving right now.” After saying that, I turned, pulling my luggage behind me as I went.

The three of them were stunned for a moment.

Aria subconsciously moved to pull me back.

Behind her, Chester dry heaved.

Aria panicked and immediately turned to help him into the bathroom.

Vanessa and Emery raced after them worriedly.

One patted Chester’s back while another held out some toilet paper. Another of them was making a cure against all that drinking.

I was left alone, the person who was always invisible in that group of five.

I let out a bitter laugh.

Dragging my luggage behind me, I left without looking back.

Over the next few days, I was busy with all sorts of paperwork and started working for the company. I was very busy. Once all the induction tasks were done, one week had flown by. I finally settled in. Clutching a huge stack of documents, I hummed as I walked home. When I turned a corner, someone grabbed my arm.I met a pair of tired eyes. “I’ve finally found you, Joshua.”I looked at Aria and then behind her. Emery and Vanessa were there too. I chuckled. “On vacation, are you? Aren’t you missing someone?”When she heard the harshness in my voice, there was a hint of guilt in Aria’s eyes. “I’m sorry, Joshua. We were wrong in trusting Chester before. That’s why you ended up being so hurt.”I only raised an eyebrow at her apology. It was rare for Aria to admit fault and apologize. Aria lowered her gaze. Her tone was sheepish as she said, “We’ve been looking for you all this time. I realized just how important you are to me when you left. I was wrong, Joshua. Come

Joshua's POVThe moment I landed, someone grabbed my luggage. A young woman smiled at me and reached out her hand.“Hello, Mr. Hutton. I’m one of the executives at the company. You can call me Lisa.”I shook her hand with a smile. “Hello. I didn’t expect the company to have such a young managing executive.”Lisa smiled so broadly that her canines were on full display. “Well, you’re something special yourself. Do you know how much effort has been put into getting you here?”She was not exaggerating. Their company had tried nine times to get me to jump ship. The first time, I had believed Aria when she said that she would take me far abroad for our honeymoon. I had rejected the offer with the excuse that I wanted to focus on my family. The second time, I had believed Aria’s promise of buying us a new house. With the reasoning that I wanted to stay close to home, I rejected the job offer again. The company kept upping its offer, dangling more and more benefits before me

After the surgery, Aria returned home. Several workers were making trips in and out to move things, but even then, not even half of Chester’s things had been moved away. Aria stood in a corner holding Vanessa’s phone. She was using it to call Joshua repeatedly. But the calls were all rejected. When she called the tenth time, she found out that the number had been blocked. Weakly, Aria let her hand fall and looked up at Emery. His hand was also down by his side as he shook his head in resignation.“My calls won’t go through. Joshua doesn’t want to answer my phone calls. He’s blocked me.”Vanessa was extremely worried, and her eyes were filled with tears. “I think Joshua’s really set on cutting us off this time. It’s my fault. I’ve let him down, especially as a sister. How am I supposed to face our parents in the afterlife after this?”Vanessa covered her face and bent double, letting out pained sobs. Emery also blamed himself. “I’m at fault too. I’ve been clowning a

Chester was fully panicking.“I… I…”He was red-faced, but no matter how he tried, he could not stutter out a full sentence. Emery’s expression darkened. He let out a disappointed laugh. “So, you’ve tricked us all, Chester.”Vanessa clutched the report and questioned Chester with pain in her voice, “Why did you do this, Chester? We’ve done everything for you since you got amnesia. We’ve done right by you. Why did you trick us for so long?”Chester got redder and redder. In the end, he was upset as he said, “I only did all this because of Joshua! It was because I gave him my seat at orientation that he met Aria and got into a relationship with her!“I’m the one who should have gotten into a relationship with Aria! I’m just taking back everything that should have belonged to me!”Chester was yelling, finally letting out how he really felt. “I fell for Aria earlier than him. I’d been crushing on her all during high school. In over four years of high school, Aria never even sai

Aria’s mind went completely blank. The doctor held out yet another document, and he seemed undecided on whether to speak. “This is Mr. Hastings’ report from six months ago. You can take a look at it yourself.”Aria grabbed it hurriedly. The pertinent words hurt like a physical wound. [Results: The patient has fully recovered all memories.]The date on the report was indeed from six months ago. Aria’s hands started to tremble. Chester had gotten better ages ago. So, why had he been tricking them for so long?Chester’s voice came from behind, and Aria looked back. She saw Vanessa and Emery laden down with bags as they helped Chester walk over. Chester was smiling as he pulled her into his arms. “Here you are, Aria. The doctor says I can be discharged! Let’s throw a party at home tonight, just the four of us. What do you think?”Typically, Aria would agree with anything Chester wanted. It was so extreme that even Emery and Vanessa could not help but tease her about i

Suddenly, the ruckus fell into silence. The next thing I knew, Vanessa squeezed past everyone and rushed toward me. A ringing slap landed on my face out of nowhere. Vanessa’s eyes were red-rimmed as she faced the cameras. “I’m so sorry about this, everyone. Actually, Joshua has been harboring an unrequited crush on Ms. Quentin for many years. I just never imagined that he would write such disgusting things and accuse Ms. Quentin of doing it.”I covered my stinging face and looked at her in disbelief. Emery also led Aria as he pushed through the crowd. He scolded me, “How could you try to steal Chester’s wife, Joshua?! Do you want a woman that badly?”Aria’s eyes hid guilt in them as she said calmly, “Joshua and I are only friends, and we’ve never crossed that line. Chester is and will always be my husband.”The last hope I held in my heart was extinguished. Everyone started to lambast me. “I knew it. There’s no way Ms. Quentin would want to marry such a man, let alone
