Chapter 1

"Still awake?"

At 10 p.m., the bedroom door swung open.

It was Daisy Duke. She wheeled a light green suitcase behind her, still dressed in the same crisp business suit she’d been wearing in the video.

Instead of jumping up to greet her like I usually would, I stayed curled up on the couch, not even bothering to look up.

"Waiting for you," I said, keeping my voice completely flat.

She walked over, her hands pausing halfway through taking off her necklace.

"What’s there to wait for? We’re basically an old married couple at this point."

"We aren't married yet," I corrected her.

"It’s bound to happen eventually."

When she spoke, a wave of her perfume drifted over. It was a sharp, cool scent of pine, a cologne I never wore.

I let out a soft laugh.

"Daisy, do you actually still want to marry me?" I asked, genuinely curious.

"Of course."

Even after telling another man how happy she was with him, she still wanted to marry me. Now, the difference was, I didn't want to anymore.

She slid off her blazer and casually tossed it over the couch. "You should head to bed first. I still need to get over this jet lag."

"Okay." I got up and walked straight into the bedroom while she stared at my back, visibly caught off guard.

I knew what she was thinking. She must be wondering why I was acting so different tonight.

Normally, no matter how late it was, I’d always have a cup of tea waiting for her to settle her stomach and help her unwind. I’d even follow her around like a personal assistant, picking up every piece of clothing she carelessly kicked off, all while blabbering away about how much groceries had gone up this week.

Tonight, though, I didn't do a single thing or say a word.

A few minutes later, she knocked on the bedroom door. "How do you make that tea again?"

"A teaspoon of honey, a squeeze of lemon in a cup of chamomile tea."

In the dark room, she walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, reaching out to rest her hand against my forehead.

"You don't have a fever. What’s wrong with you today?"

I gently brushed her hand away.

"Daisy, where did you actually go on your trip?"

She paused for a second before saying calmly. "Corholt. Just checking the Nasdaq."

Though she wasn't lying, she wasn't telling the whole truth either. When did she get so effortlessly good at lying to my face?

Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

Daisy frowned. She pulled the comforter up over my shoulders and said softly, "Stay in bed. I'll go check."

She turned, stepped out of the bedroom, and opened the front door.

"What are you doing here?" Her voice was a mixture of surprise and delight.

I got out of bed, walked into the hallway, and saw Jason Connor. He was standing right outside, wearing the same arrogant, handsome smile he had back at Nasdaq.

"Daisy, you grabbed my suitcase by mistake."

I glanced over. The color, brand, and style were identical.

Jason caught sight of me and raised an eyebrow, waving with over-the-top enthusiasm.

"Hey, Matt, you're up too! Man, this is totally on me. I really shouldn't be interrupting you and Daisy at a time like this."

I didn't say a word.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Daisy wheeling the other suitcase out of the guest room. She’d already put her blazer back on and was holding her car keys.

"Where are you going?"

"I'm feeling a bit hungry, so I'm gonna walk Jason down and grab a late-night bite with him."

"Are you two—"

Before I could even finish the sentence, she already had her answer ready.

"Don't get the wrong idea. We just happened to be on the same flight back. Besides, isn’t he your brother? I just took a ride in his car from the airport because it was safer."

I looked right at her.

Her face didn't twitch, and her voice didn't waver for a single second. It was so perfectly delivered that I couldn't find a single crack in it.

Later on, I stumbled across updates about Daisy on social media. The scandal had blown up way too big to cover up. After all, she hadn't invested in Daisy’s startup because she believed in her vision. She just needed a vessel to siphon away funds and avoid getting dragged down by her own corporate debt. She had even planned on using Daisy’s rising company as a scapegoat to bail out the Connors' empire.Daisy had been right about one thing: in business, there are no permanent enemies. What she forgot to mention was that there are no permanent friends either. The Connors' business collapsed far faster than anyone could have predicted. The daytime heat in Haddonfield was relentless. Scout sprawled out right in front of the air conditioner vent, refusing to budge even an inch.Sam, sitting nearby, was laughing hysterically, pointing at Scout and teasing him mercilessly. "You're the one who insisted on going out to suffer in the heat! Why aren't you going back outside now? Go on, I dare you to go for another lap!""Woof! Woof, woof!"I shook my head, unable to hide my smile.Over the past month, Scout and Sam had developed a total love-hate dynamic. However, it was also the most liberating trip Scout had ever had. Sam would take him through the desert trails, letting him burn off all that boundless energy.Listening to the chaos between the man and the dog, the smile stayed glued to my face.Just then, a knock sounded at the hotel room door, and Scout trotted over happily. I turned my head only to find Daisy standing right outside the door. There were dark circles bruised under her eyes, and her lips were cracked

After the call disconnected, Daisy stood frozen in place. She stared blankly at the apartment she had lived in for the past five years. For the very first time, she realized just how eerie and foreign this place felt without Matt. The apartment no longer echoed with my gentle nagging. The kitchen stove would never be lit again. Even Scout's barking, something she used to find so annoying, was gone. She stood there, completely lost, having lost the one thing that had ever made coming home mean anything at all.Suddenly, footsteps echoed from the hallway outside. Daisy whipped around, sprinted to the entryway, and yanked the front door open."Matt, you came back—"The moment she saw Jason standing there, her voice cut off instantly.Jason stood on the welcome mat, the warm smile on his face freezing in an instant. "Daisy, it's me."Daisy’s tone was dead cold. "What are you doing here?"Jason held up a plastic takeout container, his smile failing to reach his eyes. "It's getting

Her mind went completely blank, a ringing silence filling her ears. Images of every moment leading up to my departure flashed through her mind in rapid succession.Only now did she finally realize that my leaving had never been without warning. She was just hopelessly late to the party. When had Scout’s cheerful barking stopped? It seemed to have disappeared on the very day she kicked him aside. The bustling hum of my daily routine had vanished from the apartment, along with my gentle nagging, my quiet detachment, and the silent disappointment I held toward her.She hadn't even finished that final plate of pasta I had cooked for her.As if suddenly struck by a thought, Daisy frantically began tearing through the bedroom. Finally, at the bottom of the lowest drawer, she found my journal, where I had recorded every piece of my growing heartbreak.I had always been a forgetful person. Which meant every single word written in that notebook represented my absolute, unwavering determin

As soon as I stepped off the plane in Haddonfield, a wave of sweltering heat hit me. Sam Hart was waiting for me at the arrival gate, holding Scout's leash. The moment Scout saw me, his tail started thrashing, and he ran towards me."Woof! Woof!" He practically tackled me with licks. "Alright, alright! Dad's here, isn't he?"Sam walked up with a grin. "You actually made it?"I nodded. "I made it."Sam pulled me into a brief, warm hug. "Welcome back.""Thanks."After a quick catch-up, I got into his car, and we sped all the way out to the Darrowby Desert. The schedule for the outdoor dinner was insanely tight, leaving me zero time or space to wallow in grief."Catch." Sam tossed a chef's hat straight at my chest.I caught it, momentarily stunned, before a wide smile spread across my face. "You had this ready for me, too?"He gave me a firm nod. "Of course. Couldn't risk letting you run off, could I?""Not a chance."Sam handed me a glass of iced chai, clinking his glass a

When I got up the next morning, Daisy was sitting at the dining table, waiting for me."Matt, my dad was really unhappy with how you acted yesterday."I poured myself a glass of water and took a few sips. "And?""Aren't you going to apologize?""Apologize for what?""Being late, acting completely antisocial, and the attitude you threw at Jason."I set my glass down and looked straight at her. "So what?"She met my gaze, her frustration clearly visible. "Matt, my patience with you has limits. Don't wait until we actually break up to come crawling back, begging me. Because I won't take you back."I snapped my head up. "I won't beg, and you won't need to take me back."She let out a harsh, incredulous laugh. "After all these years, you're still as stubborn as ever. You're just convinced I’d never actually end things with you, aren't you?"I stared into her eyes, trying to look straight into her soul. "So, will you?"She avoided my gaze, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I don't
