Chapter 2

Autor: Glamor Pig
I forced a small smile and stepped forward.

"Daisy."

Her footsteps halted, and she turned back to look at me. "What’s up?"

"Where’s my gift?"

"What gift?"

It seemed she had completely forgotten.

"The ring."

She froze, but her very first reaction was to turn her head and look straight at Jason.

I smiled again.

"Elevator's here!" Jason called out.

She offered a quick, distracted response and fled with him in a panic, vanishing from my line of sight a second later.

Five years ago, I asked her when she’d finally be willing to marry me.

She had thrown herself into my arms, her eyes fixed on me with utter certainty as she said, "On the day our company goes public, can you propose to me? I want to be the happiest woman in the world."

She said she’d be the one to prepare the rings. Yet, she never told me the company had gone public. And she never prepared a ring.

I pulled out my phone and dialed a number.

"About that dinner you mentioned... I’m in."

The voice on the other end immediately perked up. "I’ve been begging you to come out of retirement for three years! You’re finally agreeing?"

Then, as if remembering something, the person on the line asked, "Wait, aren't you getting married to Daisy this year?"

I looked around the empty house and shook my head.

"Not anymore."

When I woke up the next morning, Daisy had already gone to work.

She had only been back for a single night, but her mess was scattered everywhere. Her unwashed clothes were dumped in the bathroom. Her half-empty coffee mug was left sitting on the dining table. The vanity was littered with used makeup wipes.

I took one look at it and didn't bother lifting a finger. Instead, I called a maid service.

The housekeeper was incredibly efficient. In less than thirty minutes, she had cleaned up the entire place and even whipped up a quick breakfast for me.

"Sir, you are really so good to your wife."

"She’s not my wife."

"Oh?" She hesitated, testing the waters. "Your girlfriend, then?"

"Yeah. For the next five days, I want you to come at this exact time every morning. I'll pay you for full-day shifts."

The housekeeper couldn't stop grinning. "Oh, wonderful! Thank you so much!"

After she left, I started packing my bags.

Scout trotted over, carrying his dog bowl in his mouth, and dropped it right into my open suitcase. He panted, wagging his tail.

"Woof! Woof!"

I patted his head softly. "Alright, buddy. I'll take you with me."

Scout was six years old. Daisy had given him to me as a gift the year my father passed away. Back then, she said, "Whenever I'm not around, Scout will keep you company."

Scout was my family.

Daisy had told so many lies over the years, but that was the one thing she didn't lie about. Because ever since then, Scout was the only one who stayed by my side and the only thing I wanted to take with me.

At 6 p.m., my phone rang.

It was Daisy.

"Don't bother making dinner for me tonight. I have plans."

I glanced down at the takeout container on the table and answered casually, "Okay."

"Also, today is your mother's birthday. Remember to give her a call."

My jaw stopped mid-chew. "Since when did you two get so close?"

"That doesn't matter. There are no permanent enemies in business. Be good, okay? Just do it for my sake."

Before I could refuse, she hung up. She sounded so completely certain that, because I loved her, I would put aside all the deep-rooted resentment I had toward my mother.

Sure, I loved her back then. But not anymore.

I tossed my phone onto the table, picked up a chicken wing, and went back to eating, completely ignoring her advice.

Ten minutes later, my phone screen lit up again. This time, it was Jason.

He sent over a short video, barely a minute long, of a dinner at the Connors', and Daisy was right there with them.

In the clip, she sat beside Jason, carefully cutting the steak for him. Once the final piece was sliced, she transferred it directly onto his plate.

She looked so gentle and devoted, something she had never once done for me.

My mother’s voice came through the audio, teasing playfully, "Well, looks like our family will be celebrating a big milestone very soon!"

Daisy didn't deny it.

A moment later, Jason sent a quick text message.

[You can't give her happiness.]

I chuckled and typed out my reply with complete composure.

[Yeah. So I'm handing her over to you. You want her?]

[I do.]

She had even planned on using Daisy’s rising company as a scapegoat to bail out the Connors' empire.Daisy had been right about one thing: in business, there are no permanent enemies. What she forgot to mention was that there are no permanent friends either. The Connors' business collapsed far faster than anyone could have predicted. The daytime heat in Haddonfield was relentless. Scout sprawled out right in front of the air conditioner vent, refusing to budge even an inch.Sam, sitting nearby, was laughing hysterically, pointing at Scout and teasing him mercilessly. "You're the one who insisted on going out to suffer in the heat! Why aren't you going back outside now? Go on, I dare you to go for another lap!""Woof! Woof, woof!"I shook my head, unable to hide my smile.Over the past month, Scout and Sam had developed a total love-hate dynamic. However, it was also the most liberating trip Scout had ever had. Sam would take him through the desert trails, letting him burn off all that boundless energy.Listening to the chaos between the man and the dog, the smile stayed glued to my face.Just then, a knock sounded at the hotel room door, and Scout trotted over happily. I turned my head only to find Daisy standing right outside the door. There were dark circles bruised under her eyes, and her lips were cracked

After the call disconnected, Daisy stood frozen in place. She stared blankly at the apartment she had lived in for the past five years. For the very first time, she realized just how eerie and foreign this place felt without Matt. The apartment no longer echoed with my gentle nagging. The kitchen stove would never be lit again. Even Scout's barking, something she used to find so annoying, was gone. She stood there, completely lost, having lost the one thing that had ever made coming home mean anything at all.Suddenly, footsteps echoed from the hallway outside. Daisy whipped around, sprinted to the entryway, and yanked the front door open."Matt, you came back—"The moment she saw Jason standing there, her voice cut off instantly.Jason stood on the welcome mat, the warm smile on his face freezing in an instant. "Daisy, it's me."Daisy’s tone was dead cold. "What are you doing here?"Jason held up a plastic takeout container, his smile failing to reach his eyes. "It's getting

Her mind went completely blank, a ringing silence filling her ears. Images of every moment leading up to my departure flashed through her mind in rapid succession.Only now did she finally realize that my leaving had never been without warning. She was just hopelessly late to the party. When had Scout’s cheerful barking stopped? It seemed to have disappeared on the very day she kicked him aside. The bustling hum of my daily routine had vanished from the apartment, along with my gentle nagging, my quiet detachment, and the silent disappointment I held toward her.She hadn't even finished that final plate of pasta I had cooked for her.As if suddenly struck by a thought, Daisy frantically began tearing through the bedroom. Finally, at the bottom of the lowest drawer, she found my journal, where I had recorded every piece of my growing heartbreak.I had always been a forgetful person. Which meant every single word written in that notebook represented my absolute, unwavering determin

As soon as I stepped off the plane in Haddonfield, a wave of sweltering heat hit me. Sam Hart was waiting for me at the arrival gate, holding Scout's leash. The moment Scout saw me, his tail started thrashing, and he ran towards me."Woof! Woof!" He practically tackled me with licks. "Alright, alright! Dad's here, isn't he?"Sam walked up with a grin. "You actually made it?"I nodded. "I made it."Sam pulled me into a brief, warm hug. "Welcome back.""Thanks."After a quick catch-up, I got into his car, and we sped all the way out to the Darrowby Desert. The schedule for the outdoor dinner was insanely tight, leaving me zero time or space to wallow in grief."Catch." Sam tossed a chef's hat straight at my chest.I caught it, momentarily stunned, before a wide smile spread across my face. "You had this ready for me, too?"He gave me a firm nod. "Of course. Couldn't risk letting you run off, could I?""Not a chance."Sam handed me a glass of iced chai, clinking his glass a

When I got up the next morning, Daisy was sitting at the dining table, waiting for me."Matt, my dad was really unhappy with how you acted yesterday."I poured myself a glass of water and took a few sips. "And?""Aren't you going to apologize?""Apologize for what?""Being late, acting completely antisocial, and the attitude you threw at Jason."I set my glass down and looked straight at her. "So what?"She met my gaze, her frustration clearly visible. "Matt, my patience with you has limits. Don't wait until we actually break up to come crawling back, begging me. Because I won't take you back."I snapped my head up. "I won't beg, and you won't need to take me back."She let out a harsh, incredulous laugh. "After all these years, you're still as stubborn as ever. You're just convinced I’d never actually end things with you, aren't you?"I stared into her eyes, trying to look straight into her soul. "So, will you?"She avoided my gaze, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I don't
