Chapter 4

Author: Pigmy Bean
The moment I finished speaking, Harriet's voice came from somewhere in the distance. "Jim, Joshua wants you to hurry back."

Jim immediately turned around, his feet instinctively carrying him toward Harriet. After taking a few steps, he seemed to remember that I was still there. He froze for a second, then turned back and tried to make up for it. "Cecilia, what did you just say?"

Before I could answer, he gave a careless little laugh. "Whatever it was, you can decide. You're going to be the lady of the house from now on anyway."

As he spoke, he pinched my cheek, and his words came strangely fast.

"I know you don't like crowded places, so why don't you go home and wait for me? Just let me know when you get there so I know you're safe. I won't walk you home, okay?"

His tone sounded like he was asking for my opinion, but there was no intention of discussing it with me. The moment he finished speaking, he turned and walked away without a second thought.

I watched his back disappear, my heart slowly growing colder as I finally understood the truth. Those sweet, thoughtful words had never been meant for me. He had only wanted to get them out of the way as quickly as possible so that he could hurry back to Harriet.

He did not care how I felt, what I had just said, or even whether I made it home safely.

To him, it was nothing more than a task to check off. It was just a few words he had to say because that was what a boyfriend was supposed to do. Once he had said them, he could hurry back to Harriet.

When I actually texted him to let him know I had made it home safely, he never replied. After all, when Jim was with Harriet, he never looked at his phone.

Thankfully, I had no intention of humiliating myself by chasing after him. I had said everything I needed to say. Whatever happened next had nothing to do with Jim anymore.

Neither of them came home that night. They did not even send me a message. Just as I expected, Jim did not care whether I had made it home safely.

As for where the two of them had gone, I did not care anymore either. I spent the entire next day sorting through my belongings.

Anything I did not need immediately, I packed up and shipped away. It was only then that I realized just how little of this house actually belonged to me.

When we first rented the place, Jim had immediately given the biggest bedroom to Harriet. She had a huge four-door wardrobe and her own private vanity.

Meanwhile, the closet in the room Jim and I shared was small to begin with, and most of the space was taken up by his formal clothes, leaving my neatly folded clothes crammed into one tiny corner. My few cheap, no-name makeup products were piled on the nightstand, and there was not even a mirror.

I had never thought much about it before. I simply accepted it as the way things were. Sometimes, I would even marvel at how much Harriet could afford to buy.

Whenever I mentioned it, Jim would always grumble, "She just loves buying useless junk. One of these days, I'm going to throw all of it out."

Only now did I realize the truth.

He might have complained about Harriet's shopping habits, but whenever she wanted something, he could buy a hundred of the exact same thing for her without hesitation. That kind of favoritism was something I had never experienced.

My eyes suddenly filled with tears. I quickly lifted my head and blinked them away.

One thing was clearer to me than ever before—if I could not have something, then I did not want it anymore.

After checking the house one last time to make sure I had not left anything behind, I scheduled a pickup. The moment the delivery driver took my things away, my phone rang.

"Is this Ms. Carter? I'm Lucy, a real estate agent with Brighton & Co. You previously asked me to help you find a suitable interior designer, and I…"

I listened to her enthusiastic explanation, but my mind suddenly went blank. So much had happened lately that I had completely forgotten the new home I had just bought for our wedding was still waiting to be renovated.

The house belonged to Jim and me. However, I had paid for most of it. Back then, I was naive enough to think that since we were getting married soon, it did not matter if I contributed a little more.

It was the first time I had ever spent that much money on anything, yet I had not felt the slightest bit of pain. Whenever I imagined the two of us moving in together after our wedding, my heart had been filled with nothing but excitement.

Now, the more I remembered how excited I had been when I bought that house with my own hands, the colder my heart felt.

The wedding was canceled. There was no reason for me to keep the house either.

"I'm sorry, but I don't need the interior designer anymore. As for the house… Please help me sell it. The sooner, the better."

The endless stream of words on the other end suddenly stopped. I thought I had put her in a difficult position. Instead, after a moment of hesitation, she asked, "Ms. Carter, is that what the homeowner wants as well?"

I froze.

What did she mean? Was I not the homeowner?

At the time, I had even refused to put Jim's name on the deed because I had wanted to treat the house as my contribution to the marriage.

I quickly asked what she meant.

A few seconds of keyboard tapping came through the phone, then she spoke again.

"Ms. Carter, the registered owner of this property was changed to Harriet Smith last month. If you want to sell the house, we'll need to get the homeowner's consent."

My eyes burned with tears. Without hesitating for even a second, I unzipped the tent, grabbed the hand reaching out to me, and pulled myself to my feet. Then I ran.The wolves that had moved away were drawn back by the sound of our footsteps. In the blink of an eye, they were right in front of us.I felt the hand gripping mine tighten, and his pace quickened."Don't be afraid. Just run with me."I nodded.Even though I was already exhausted and could barely run anymore, I forced my heavy legs to keep moving. I did not dare slow down, let alone stop.Just as I struggled to keep going, my foot caught on a rock, and I stumbled and fell. Before I could get back up, a wolf lunged straight at me. Wilson quickly dragged me forward, but another wolf attacked him from the side. He had no time to worry about me and could only keep shouting for me to climb the tree. However, more and more pairs of glowing green eyes surrounded me. I could not find a single chance to climb.I carefully ba

Jim felt like a cold wind had blown straight through his chest after those merciless words. He pressed his lips together, tears clinging to his lashes."Cecilia, I'm sorry. I was wrong before. I never understood where the line was between a brother and his sister, but I understand now. Can you forgive me one more time? I already had the house renovated. Look, I even got the breed of cat you used to love."He hurriedly pulled out his phone and held it in front of me, swiping through photo after photo.I did not even look up. I simply slapped his hand away."I don't want to see it. I'm not interested, and I don't like cats anymore."His phone hit the ground. For a moment, Jim looked so heartbroken that he could barely breathe. Still, he forced a smile, crouched down, and picked it up."Okay. Then when you go back, we can—"I cut him off impatiently, "Do you not understand what I'm saying? I'm not going back. Even if I were, I would never get back together with you. So, stop foll

Cecilia's POV:"Ms. Carter, take a break. I don't think we're going to see the pride today. Once you have rested, we should head back to camp."I waved him off. My eyes never left the monitors.I had been in Frisia for more than a year, and filming the documentary had been far harder than anyone expected. We barely had enough usable footage to show for it, and one of our crew members had even come close to being mauled.A lot of people had quit because of it. They packed their things and went straight home. Fewer than twenty people remained now, which was pitifully small for a professional production team.Still, we had not given up. We were holding on and doing everything we could to finish what we had started. Then a cup of warm water appeared beside me. The familiar scent made the tips of my ears turn red."Have some water. I'll keep watch for you."I quietly said okay and let him take my place. I had barely gotten to my feet when someone caught the edge of my shirt."Ms. C

The doctor did not seem concerned."Don't worry. These are just treatment methods. They won't cause any harm. Our hospital always puts the patient's wishes first."Hearing that, Jim finally relaxed.Just like he used to, he reached out and gently rubbed Harriet's head."Be good, Harriet. Cooperate with the treatment. Once you're better, I'll come get you. I'm still paying the rent on your current place. I'm just going to move into our wedding home with Cecilia. You don't mind, right?"In the past, Harriet truly would have objected. However, now, what right did she have to refuse? She nodded repeatedly."Jim, I don't mind. I can move out. I won't bother you and Cecilia. Just don't leave me here, okay? I'm Harriet. Please don't leave me behind."The same words she had said countless times before reached Jim's ears. However, this time, they could no longer touch his heart. He gently pushed her away. "I'm not leaving you."His expression was still as gentle as ever. Yet to Harrie

Harriet rose to her toes and lunged for a kiss, almost like she had lost her mind. Jim stepped back, but she kept moving forward.Jim had never known Harriet could be so strong. In his eyes, she had always been gentle and fragile. Her breath brushed against his neck. Finally, he snapped back to reality and shoved her away."Enough, Harriet! I'm your brother!"Jim practically shouted the words, his voice filled with disbelief and desperation. However, Harriet seemed unable to hear him at all. She wiped away her tears again and again, yet the smile at the corner of her lips never faded."Jim, don't you think you sound ridiculous saying that yourself? We're not even related by blood. What gives you the right to keep calling yourself my brother? Do you really see me as nothing more than your little sister?"And what are you pretending for now? You've liked me for a long time, haven't you? If you never had those feelings for me, then why did you let me get close to you again and again

For a moment, all Jim could hear was a high-pitched ringing in his ears.A terrible thought suddenly surfaced in his mind. He did not have time to say another word to the wedding company. He hung up immediately and called Cecilia.Only one day had passed. Usually, after the phone rang a few times, he would hear the cold automated message telling him that no one was available to answer. This time, however, the phone did not ring at all. Instead, a recorded voice came through immediately."The number you have dialed is no longer in service..."Jim's chest tightened as a wave of unease washed over him. His eyes stared blankly ahead, slowly losing focus. He called Cecilia's best friend next, but every call was rejected. Eventually, even her friend blocked his number. The messages he had sent Cecilia remained untouched in their chat history, with no reply and not even a sign that she had seen them.A terrible sense of panic began to rise inside Jim. For the first time, it felt as th
